I liked Kathlene from the moment she walked in. First impressions are everything and she did not let down. She has great taste, and I put my trust in her from the beginning. I needed someone who would take the hammer and run, and she did just that. Before presenting the room layout and design ideas to me, she got a good sense of our taste in decor as well as making sure she got a feel for the rest of the decor in the home... to make sure everything blended and flowed well from room to room. She was very thorough in her research, and when it came time to pick out everything from the paint, to carpet, to pillows, and curtains, there were many choices all of which made sense and fit with the look we were going for in the room. She is very personable, flexible, and reliable. She is thorough and you can definitely tell she takes pride in her work. She is honest and willing to work within a budget that is comfortable for you. I would highly recommended her to my friends and family. The photos attached are my new family room. This was an addition to my house, so this room never even existed prior to this. Kathlene was working off of architect drawings and a very bare bones framed out structure when she came to quote me for the job.

If there were a lifestyle magazine called “Single Dude Living,” my old apartment would have been a centerfold. My new place, however, should be in The New York Review of Books. In my first conversation with Amy I said I’d like to have a place where when people see it for the first time they say, “Wow, look what you did with the place.” Amy said that’s exactly what I’m going to get, and I can attest she delivered 100% on that promise. I have my own slice of Manhattan in a cozy place on the Main Line. Amy couldn’t have been more responsive and communicative throughout the process; she exudes confidence; has a wonderful sense of humor; she listened to my ideas; and I believe she struck the proper balance between being assertive with her professional take on the project and incorporating my tastes/style/wants etc. The size of this project (a small, one-bedroom apartment) didn’t dictate Amy’s level of involvement or enthusiasm. She gave my place more attention than I could have asked for. I lived at my prior apartment for close to four years. I haven’t been in the new place a month yet and I feel more at home already than I ever did in my previous place. An apartment isn’t just the framed pictures on your wall or the food in your fridge; it’s a reflection of yourself, and Amy was able to bring that out in interior design form in a way I would have never been able to do myself, even with an unlimited budget. It gives me great pleasure to post another 5-star review for Amy in hopes it brings her more business, because I am living in a 5-star apartment. Treat yourself to your own 5-star space and hire Amy.

Michele is very personable and knowledgeable in her skill set. She helped us pick paint colors for our row home in Philly! We now have an appt with a painter in a few days! I appreciate all of her suggestions and will likely reach out to her in the future for other home design/styling projects.

Linda came over to provide guidance on a kitchen and bath remodel before I met with several contractors. She gave me ideas as to what could be done to rearrange the room and appliances for better functionality and suggested things I never would have thought about. When the remodelers came for a visit, I had much more insight into what might be possible and was ready for a more productive meeting. I would have had that "deer in the headlights" look if not for the time Linda spent with me. She is professional in her approach and a caring and thoughtful person. I would not hesitate to hire her for another consultation or to design a new space.

Tracey at B.Home interiors is in my opinion the best choice for interior design in Northern New Jersey. Tracey just "knows" what is stylish and current but not trendy and brings that wisdom and attention to detail to all of her projects. No two projects look the same and there is always a special little nugget in each room that makes it unique and personal.

Working with Ali and her team was a very pleasant experience. I had some anxiety about working with an interior designer based on some prior bad experiences. However this experience was quite the opposite; Ali was awesome! She incorporated my vision in the design for the space, remained on budget and used some existing pieces that I couldn't give up. I absolutely love my living room/dinning room combination. I look forward to having her return for an update to my family room.

Loved working with Tanya she knows her stuff. She literally handled everything from A-Z. We checked in from time to time but otherwise we let her do thing. Her portfolio is impressive, my wife always contacted her in the evening, and she always picked up our calls and answered any questions. If you are looking to use an honest designer with good experience at an affordable rate then give her call. I am glad we did.

Linda helped me stage my home before I put it on the market. She spent an afternoon giving me ideas and helping me move the stuff I already had around. Within 10 days, my house was sold! I think that the staging Linda did was the main reason the house sold so quickly, she made it look fantastic. I was amazed at how she could look at a room and envision what needed to happen to make it look more attractive. I would definitely recommend Linda for any kind of interior design service, she has a great eye.

Ana has been our "go-to" decorator for over 10 years. She has helped us with everything... paint colors, furniture, flooring and window treatments. We recently hired Ana for an extensive remodeling project of two master bathrooms, dining room and kitchen of our North Carolina beach home. Ana was able to guide us through these projects with extreme professionalism and a sense of humor. It was a three month project that we couldn't have done without Ana. Everything turned out great and we are constantly receiving compliments. Our primary home also has many "touches of Ana" in it. I couldn't be happier. On time, dependable and professional.

I've worked with Linsey several times in the last few months - she has been my go-to for refreshing the decor my home and helping me finding my exact interior style. She is able to deliver the dream pieces we all crave to have in our home but at a much more pocket friendly price point. My husband has even agreed that her help in styling our home has significantly improved the overall vibe when welcoming guests/our own moods while we are home. A space that is pulled together and inviting makes such a positive impact. In addition to this, I've also sought out her help for providing the most adorable/innovative bridal shower favors for my friend's special day. Linsey's airplant holders were the talk of the party, and everyone wanted to know more. I HIGHLY recommend Linsey for any interior styling needs and as a go-to for creative, thoughtful pieces to decorate your home with - her work is truly a conversation starter!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
