The Louis Pettinelli Quartet was everything I expected. They played at our wedding reception cocktail hour and all our guests stated how classy it was. We submitted specific songs and his band played it all. I appreciated how flexible and accommodating his was with our request. He was able to honor our desire for a 30 minute opening session with just the pianist and an hour performance with the whole band. I was very surprised when the sax player broke out the clarinet for one the songs. All the band members were professional and respectful. At the same time, you can tell they really enjoyed playing their set. I highly recommend Louis Pettinelli and his musical colleagues. He understands your needs and delivers it with the highest quality, professionalism and respect. Bands and musicians can learn a few things from Louis Pettinelli.

The Matt Santry Band was great! They had our guests out on the dance floor the ENTIRE night... it was packed! I've never been to a wedding where so many people were dancing. The band was upbeat and fun and Matt Santry was a great emcee to get our crowd going! Matt himself responded in such a timely manner and was always quick to help us navigate the wedding planning process. We had a lot of questions and very specific requests for what we wanted to hear, and Matt went above and beyond to make our wedding perfect. We have already had guests and other vendors ask questions about Matt and the band and how to contact them for their own events. Huge hit and would definitely recommend to anyone else looking for a fun wedding band!

I briefly took guitar lessons from Josh. I wanted to learn to play with other musicians and improvise, and his jazz background is what caught my attention. The sessions were informative and Josh was very encouraging. I had to stop unexpectedly but what I learned in the few lessons I took was very helpful and got me out of the rut I fall into while practicing on my own.

Marty is an outstanding vocal coach. My 15 year old daughter has been studying under his direction for only 5 months, and I've seen a marked improvement in her range and maturity as a vocalist. Marty has been flexible in working with her hectic schedule. He's been able to help her prepare different styles of performances from rock solos and backup vocals (with Jon Bon Jovi!) to Broadway pieces.

I took beginning ukulele lessons with Carol. I am a 58 year old student who can not read music. Carol was patient, understanding and very encouraging. As a first grade teacher, I plan to play the ukulele in class for our poetry lessons. Carol helped me learn the songs I will use in class and now I feel prepared and ready to shine like a rock star in front of my first graders! I would highly recommend her!

Testimonial for David Joel, Guitar Instructor: My name is Ken and I have been playing guitar for 43 years since the age of 12. I took lessons for about 2 years at the very beginning. I never learned how to read music in the traditional sense, just tab. I have played in classic rock bands over the years. Several years ago I reached a point in my playing that I felt I could not get any better and was playing the same music, leads over and over again. I was convinced that all I could learn was what I could hear or was shown by other musicians. I knew I developed bad technique habits over the years as well. I wanted to get better and began looking for an instructor on-line and found David Joel. A brief review of David’s web-site indicated he was well-versed in all styles on electric, acoustic and classical guitar. The backbone of David’s approach is based on the Berklee Series Modern Method books by William Leavitt. It requires the guitarist to read and play music…something I never did and as it turns out contributed to my “illiteracy” or lack of language or “data” as David refers to music. In the 2 ½ years that I studied with David he completely changed my technique, increased my potential to play a variety of styles and improvise and helped me to achieve many of my goals as a player. He is amazingly encouraging and very real when it comes to students of all ages. I currently enjoy playing in a number of classic rock bands and praise band at church. Thanks David!

BD Lenz was the absolute perfect wedding band for us. They were easy to work with, extremely accommodating, and just an unbelievable group of musicians. BD was easily reachable via phone/email leading up to the day, and was completely professional throughout. They really knew how to keep people up dancing all night and even allowed me to come up and play a song with my old band. BD stayed up and played some lead guitar, just such an awesome experience. Music is so important to my wife and I, and there's no better band we could think of to play on our day. Please, please, please hire this band. You won't be sorry!!!

Mr. Rotante instructed my daughter Isabella in piano for four years. His work ethic is tremendous while providing educational guidance to prepare my daughter for high school band. His personal touch inspired my daughter to play on her own outside of her lessons. Passion and persistence are two of John’s attractive qualities.

I hired Andy to play at my restaurant many times. I have known Andy for over a decade now, and I associate him with some of the best bands in town. When he plays solo he is respectful of his audience and plays an excellent range of music. He is definitely a crowdpleaser. And I can always count on him to arrive on time and play for as long as we agreed that he would play. I recommend him highly – and look forward to working with him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
