I needed to install a new through-the-wall A/C and was very concerned about insulation because there is a draft in the winter. It's summer now so not sure about the insulation but Varian took extra care of this piece and brought the necessary tools / equipment. Also was very responsive via text and I was able to book him in 48 hours. Great job!

If my budget was 10 times as large and my book 10 times more complicated than it was / I would be equally as happy as I am now. I almost wake up feeling guilty because the work and diligence and attention I received was beyond expectation if I had paid 10 times more

David illustrated a poem we wrote for our grandson, turning it into a beautiful 20 page children's book. We were thrilled with his work! David was a joy to work with. He was communicative throughout the whole process, and always ready with a keen solution to any question or concern we had. We highly recommend him for any creative project; his artistic ability, professionalism, speed, and attention to detail are of the utmost quality. We will certainly work with him again for future projects.

My small company often needs invitations, Facebook promos, event logos, etc. Vin is our "go to" person now. Most recently he designed a custom "vintage" font for us inspired by an antique sample. And his Facebook materials are really eye-catching. Best yet, his stuff translates between print and digital really well. He's really helping us make a brand. Thanks!

This was the second time we hired Adam and LoHud. The comics Adam brought each were unique enough that everyone in the audience had a favorite. But it was Adams hosting that kept the show connected. He is not only a very funny comic but as the MC he engaged the audience and kept things rolling smoothly.

Laura was a fantastic tutor, she always had well organized, pre-planned exercises for me to do in my lessons, these helped my grammar and reading abilities a lot! Moreover my conversation skills improved, as we constantly allotted time to practice and she taught me some of the more colloquial phrases used in Spain that are really useful, but not necessarily always covered in text books. Overall, Laura was a great help!! Thank you!

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

“I have had the privilege to work with Clive Jacobson on several projects, from presentation books, to website to branding work. It is rare when you find someone who truly gets who you are, and can then express it for you through graphic design. His eye is impeccable and his level of taste is unmatched. He is the most talented designer and artist I have worked with and look forward to working with him on many more projects in the future.”

The #1 SEO and Web Development Company "Even though my business was fairly large and we had a large web development staff, I knew that we were going to need some serious help with web development and search engine optimization. Our company was about to launch a new product line and we needed to improve our site design and to up our search engine rankings for increased exposure and we needed to do it fast. I contacted GetMeOnTop.com for help, and our launching was definitely successful. We had an intense discussion with GetMeOnTop and I explained to the company our specific needs: we needed methods for optimizing our site design even though we had developers on staff and we also needed good SEO. GetMeOnTop.com was willing to work with our existing developers and the SEO techniques supplied were perfect. From email campaigns, to back linking, from website improvements, to search engine optimization, we had all of our marketing and upgrade needs addressed professionally by GetMeOnTop. Best of all, the company worked with us and offered super affordable website solutions, and the company also had no problem meeting our time or budget demands. We anticipated having to spend an extraordinary amount of money to get our upgrades and SEO off the ground, but that simply wasn’t the case. I wholeheartedly can recommend GetMeOnTop, they are #1 in my book, certainly the Best SEO and Web Company in New York."

Bruno was a pleasure to work with - smart, clear, professional and a genuine craftsman. He created (from scratch), enormous 10' tall bookshelves for our living room and then installed them. The installation was especially tricky as we're in an old house with no straight lines so Bruno had to, literally, measure out each shelf individually so they could be moved about. He stuck to his very reasonable estimate and we're loving our shelves. Picture is shelves going up - pics of them filled with books to come : )

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
