I took GMAT tuition from Arbor Tutors. My tutor was excellent! He helped me to gain a solid grasp of the fundamental concepts to ace my test. The tuition was customized to focus on areas I needed help on. I will turn to Arbor Tutors the next time I need a tutor. I recommend them.

By the time I found Dan on Thumbtack, I had been working on the GMAT for 1.5 years. I had taken a prep course and used a tutor from the prep course and couldn't improve my practice or official scores beyond the 600-640 range. Further I felt like I had wasted money and time learning "how to approach" the exam instead of learning the content needed to be proficient and able to beat it. Dan was extraordinarily patient and understanding of my frustrations and desire to achieve a 700+ score. From the start, we went back to the basics and corrected several bad habits and dug into content gaps I had in both the quant and verbal sections. Dan was incredibly flexible with hours and locations and made himself available on short notice when I had a few scheduling conflicts and urgent questions. Most importantly, Dan took a personalized approach to our tutoring sessions. He commiserated with me in moments of discouragement and cheered me on when I felt like quitting. I unequivocally recommend Dan to anyone who has tried and failed at the GMAT and is looking at a final short or attempt. He is worth his rate and adds value in more ways than I could have ever received from the prep course and their tutors.

I started working with Kamil late in my college process. Many tutors doubted that I had enough time to prep and were only willing to work with me as a sort of "second hand client". With only two months left before my last possibly act during my senior year, Kamil and I worked day and night to achieve my goal score. Often meeting before and running after midnight only to see each other at six the next day, Kamil and I turned my test scores around to help me get into Cornell University. Kamil is kind, conscientious and committed. For him, standardized testing tutoring is a calling. He is his own brand.

I studied with James for my SATs. He has a very unique way of approaching the exam that my prior tutors did not offer. For example, he taught me how to analyze questions based on the way they are written. This was a great skill to have and made me much more confident about going into the test room.

Are you looking for a math tutor who is well prepared for each lesson, who is a math genius, who is clearly passionate about teaching and who really cares whether his students are making progress? Well, you have found him in Aron G. from Spring Valley, NY! I was having difficulty with trigonometry. The support I was receiving in my private school was very limited, but I still wanted to take the Regent. I had moved several times during my elementary schooling and then skipped a grade, which didn't exactly help my math background. I had worked with several private tutors on trigonometry for months to prepare for the Regent. No improvement. In fact, I was feeling less and less confident that I would be able to master the subject. It seemed like I wasn't fitting into the cookie cutter. Then I started to work with Mr. G. At our first class, I couldn't believe how well prepared he was. He had written his own outline of the topic for our lesson. He provided a broad overview of the topic at hand, which made sense to me. He showed me some examples. Then he had me doing problems on my own--and I could! Working with Mr. G. for several weeks really made me feel like I would be able to pass the Regent. Mr. G. built on my strengths. But he also quickly identified my weaknesses. We zeroed in on gaps that I had in my mathematics background. It turns out that though I was missing some basics, I actually have somewhat of a facility for trigonometry. Once Mr. G. helped me to close the gaps and acquire the missing basics, I was able to do the trigonometry. Now I not only feel good about trigonometry, but I feel good about math in general. I am so happy and grateful to have found such a great tutor and great teacher in Aron G. from Spring Valley, NY.

I was able to achieve what I thought was not possible; a 780 on the GMAT. When I started my journey of struggling to perform well on the GMAT, I was scoring in the upper 500's. I finally bit the bullet and went to a well-known tutoring company that I had heard great things about. Unfortunately, they were unable to help me get my score up more than 20 points. So I went to another tutor that was highly recommended by my undergrad peers. This person went to an Ivy League school and was well liked by those who used his services. And, he did manage to bring my score up to a 640, but this was still well below what I was hoping to achieve. Finally, I did some research, and took a shot with Dr. Fikar. He knew my background and the various tutors I had worked with. He was confident that he could get my score into the mid 700 range, if he had my complete cooperation. I had every reason to doubt him, but, I decided instead to put my complete trust in him and his decades of expertise, and I'm so glad that I took that step of faith. He knew exactly how to sharpen my strengths and bolster my weaknesses, and, although I am by nature a type A personality who likes to have a certain structure and step by step plan in place, Dr. Fikar was much more talented than any spreadsheet of incremental goals that I had received from my previous tutors. I'm not trying to knock those that have a cookie cutter planned approach, I have just realized that in order to achieve a super high score, relying on structured lesson plans will never get you there. It was more of an art form with Dr. Fikar, as he combined his vast knowledge of the GMAT exam and his brilliant mind with unique and creative, out-of-the-box teaching methods and use of materials. He was not limited by a standard approach, but rather tuned into my specific needs on any given day, and helped bring me to a score that was frankly beyond my wildest dreams. Of course I gained admission into my top school choice, and the future is very bright for me now. I am so much more than appreciative, and plan on referring him to all of my friends and family members, when the time comes for them. His services are truly worth every penny that I spent.

Odyssey Test Prep was by far the best decision I made for getting ready for the LSAT. The tutors this company has on staff are top notch and know what their doing. I came to Odyssey with a 150 LSAT score and my score increased 20 points to a 170 within the time that I worked with them which is something that I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. So if you're looking to increase you're LSAT score go with Odyssey it will be the best move you can make.

You know it’s a nightmare out there, looking for the right fit for your kids when you are searching for test prep tutors. I have twins going into the SATs and there are just so many bad teachers out there. I really had to ask Chelsea International a lot of questions when I came across them. I have to say, they blew me away. Not just with their professional nature, but also with their level of expertise, care, and true understanding of what it takes to bring out your child’s fullest potential. I would recommend this tutoring service to anyone. The kids have been working with them now for the last few months, and the difference in their work is amazing. I am really looking forward to seeing their scores after their SAT tests.

I highly recommend Horace, he is an amazing tutor! Horace helped me improve my score from a 570 to a 710 after just a couple of weeks of tutoring sessions! He is very patient and strategic in his approach. He made sure to understand my testing strengths and weaknesses and tailored his approach to meet my needs. He was also very accessible and invested in my success - he spent several hours sitting through practice exams with me (via virtual sessions) so he could get a real sense of where I needed to improve and spent several hours reviewing both incorrect answers as well as correct answers that I could be answering more quickly or more efficiently. I can honestly say I would not have scored a 700+ score without Horace in my corner.

Thomas was one of the best tutors I have ever had. After trying a few other SAT tutors, I decided to stick with him. Thomas found different ways to help me understand specific topics and worked with me when I needed extra help. He's constantly researching new tutroing methods and implements them into his sessions. With his help, I was able to increase my SAT score by around 200 points. My parents even signed my sister up for tutoring with Thomas because they saw what an amazing tutor he was. After my SAT process was done, Thomas walked me through the college process and helped me with my essays. Because of him, I am going to college with a full scholarship and I will graduate debt free. Thomas is an amazing tutor and an amazing person. He builds connections with his students and their families that extend outside of the academic sphere. I could not be more grateful to Thomas for all that he has done for me and my family.

Ben has been amazing with both my first and fourth graders. Since working with Ben my fourth grade son has improved his test scores and report card significantly. He is also enjoying learning more because Ben is creative and fun and makes learning seem exciting. My first grader wanted to be more challenged, and Ben was able to work with that too. Overall an amazing tutor who has helped us all so much.

Luka worked with my son throughout his freshman year at NYU. We have worked with tutors previously and Luka has by far, been the most inspiring and dependable teacher/tutor that we have had the fortune of working with. My son, who is in the Pre Med/Health undergrad program will continue to work with Luka throughout his academic career. Our son's GPA went from a GPA of 3.0 to 3.8.~ we highly recommend Luka.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
