I had the pleasure of working with Caitlin, one of the trainers at The Canine Cure. We ended up board and training one of our dogs and boarding the other one as well. Caitlin took into consideration all of our concerns and did a great job building the foundation for our pups training. She was also very good about keeping us updated about both of our dogs while we were away on vacation and both of our dogs seemed like they were well taken care of during their stay. I will continue to use her services in the future and definitely would recommend her for anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Suki did a phenomenal job with my two cats. Thoughtful, TRUSTWORTHY, patient and so considerate. She made herself available for the holiday season and even came twice a day, sending photos with each visit. She also lives in Manhattan so I never worried about the metro causing problems with her getting to my place. When I got back, my guys were happy and clearly cared for in my absence (my girl cat gets pissy when she's pissed--if you catch my drift--but I was pleased to find she did not feel compelled to express her anger on my mattress. Thank you Suki!). I couldn't be happier! Suki will definitely be my go to pet sitter from here on out! Highly recommend her.

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

Laura is a pro. She's knowledgeable, responsive, passionate and kind. I adopted a puppy recently and hired Laura for 3 training sessions. Even before Biggie arrived, Laura proved to be immensely valuable. She provided lists of all of the items I should have on-hand, including food and toy recommendations, and she even helped me find a vet and a dog walker. Once the sessions started, Laura arrived on time with a clear curriculum and format. She was organized and direct and taught Biggie (and me!) the essentials around crate training, focusing, sitting, meal time, walking on a leash and more. As a first time puppy owner, I was totally lost before I met Laura. She's incredible, and I highly recommend her. Laura is not only great at what she does, but it's clear she loves her job as well.

Katie has been providing excellent and attentive care to my 7 month old Goldendoodle puppy for the past 5 months. She makes a mid-day visit to him 5 days a week and has stayed with him in my home for boarding several times when I had to travel. I value the trusted relationship I have with Katie and my puppy has developed a loving bond with her as well. She treats and cares for him as I would, is consistently reliable and responsive, and focuses on meeting her customer's needs. She is flexible and acts upon feedback. I sincerely recommend Katie to care for your companion. Chris Mulderig

Ed has been invaluable to us and our new puppies. We work in Manhattan during the week, and simply can't make it back to NJ during the day, but Ed has been there every day we've needed him, making sure our puppies get the attention, water, exercise, etc. that they need, and he obviously cares about the puppies. He's also given us links to articles, advice, etc. on raising new puppies. I fully recommend Edz Pet Walking!

Our 4-month old Jack Russell puppy Chilli is very attached to us, so when we need to be out of town we do not want to just leave her at any pet hotel. We're so glad to have found Strut Your Pup - Jorge and his family provide us with the most ideal dog boarding service we were looking for. Jorge is very professional, knowledgeable about pets, reliable and friendly to both his clients and their animals. He always takes great care of Chilli, gives her all the personal attention she needs and also gives us a lot of reassurance by kindly sending us updates regularly on how Chilli is doing. Also, at Jorge's, Chilli gets to socialize with one or two other dogs under supervision, unlike in other commercial daycare where she might interact with random dogs every time, and close supervision is also not always guaranteed. We have full confidence in Jorge and his team, and would highly recommend their dog walking and dogsitting services to all dog lovers who care about their dogs. Thank you Jorge!

I had the pleasure of meeting Adene when she came to feed and check on my cat several times this summer. She was thorough in asking what kind of care my cat needed, and was specific in how much time she would be able to spend with her. She clearly communicated the timing of her visits, and texted a picture of my kitty on each visit. Adene was wonderful and I will absolutely use her services again in the future! Highly recommended!

I absolutely love KAH! The founder and employees are so passionate about making sure my baby Roxie is taken care of. Not only do they ensure Roxie gets her daily exercise, but we also receive awesome incentives that only KAH offers. I would urge anyone with a pet to run over to Khalifa's Animal House now!

December 2016 Julie W. Exotic Parrot sitting I was a little reluctant to leave our newly rescued Eclectus parrot for more than just a couple of days, for fear that he might start plucking his feathers again. I instantly liked Katie and knew that this wasn’t just another job for her, but rather her passion. She was not only great around the parrot, but my dog took to her as well. Katie went above and beyond caring for our parrot. She sent me a video of him playing in his water bowl and pictures every day. I absolutely wasn’t worried about him for a minute while we were away. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for someone to care for their pet.

Mark, his son & daughter have taken good care of our cat, Carmen and our dog, Rebecca many times. They fed them according to their special diets, administered their medicine, and gave them both plenty loving attention and exercise. The Dawg Vacation House of NJ provides much better care than boarding at any Kennel and their rates are lower too. I would definitely recommend The Dawg Vacation House of NJ for all your pet care service needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does boarding a horse cost?

Finding the right horse boarding location is a big step in a horse owner’s life. This will be the place your horse will live and where you will visit multiple times per week or even daily. The cost of horse boarding will depend on the level of service you desire, the location of the stables, and the luxury level of the property. Here are some examples of average horse boarding costs:

    • Overnight stabling: $30 per horse per night.
    • Partial boarding (owner feeds and mucks): $220 per horse per month, with a three-month commitment.
      • Administration of oral medication: $10 per dose.
      • Bandaging: $20 per event, plus cost of materials.
      • Trailering to vet if owner is unable: $25, plus $25 per hour to wait with horse.
    • Basic full boarding: $325-$350 per month per horse. Includes twice daily hay and daily stall cleaning.
      • Horse training: $20 per session.
      • Pasture turn out: $20 per session.
      • Blanketing: $1 per day/$30 per month.
      • Vet or farrier hold: $20. This means haltering the horse and standing with it as it receives treatment or shoeing.

Where can I board my horse?

You can board your horse at any barn or stable that provides horse boarding services. To find horse boarding near you, read reviews of area locations and speak with equestrian friends to find one with a solid reputation. Ideally, the location will be within a reasonable drive from your home or office. This is especially important if you are paying for partial boarding services and are responsible for feeding your horse and cleaning its stall each day. You may choose your boarding barn or stables based on the services they provide. Some offer more extensive amenities — at an added price — that reduce the amount of work you need to do to keep your horse comfortable. Consider whether you want training, blanketing, exercise and other perks in addition to standard offerings like hay and stable mucking. Your stable may have temperament requirements and proof that your horse has the proper vaccinations required by your state. This protects both your horse and the other horses in the stable. Many states require that locations offering horse boarding services have stable licenses that are renewed each year. Always be sure to enter into a clearly written boarding contract that will cover your horse and belongings in case of accident, and remember our tips for smart hiring.

    What is horse boarding?

Horse boarding is like rental housing for your horse. Horse boarding is helpful for people who don’t have the space or the resources to install and maintain a stable on their property. A horse can be housed in a barn with other horses and receive the care they need. Owners can visit their horse for riding, grooming, training, etc. Horse boarding services may vary based on the company and the price. Some horse boarders may offer short-term boarding of 24 hours to several nights for people passing through an area, while most offer boarding by the month for horses whose owners live in the area. There is partial- and full-service boarding, which indicates how much of the work of feeding the horse and cleaning the stall is the responsibility of the owner rather than the boarding barn. For an added fee, horse boarding can also include grooming services, riding and training, medication administration, and more.

To find the right boarding fit for you and your horse, make a list of your top priorities. These might include immediate access to riding trails, round-the-clock supervision, or a nearby or affiliated veterinarian. Always visit the site to learn exactly where your horse will be kept and whether the barn and grounds are in good condition. Read reviews, and always practice smart hiring. It’s also critical to sign the proper legal documents that protect both you and your horse, such as boarding agreements. Above all, make sure it seems like a place your horse will be comfortable between your visits.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
