Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

She is training my dog to be a Service Dog. He was in another, more expensive school. Did not seem to learn more than some sloppy basic obedience. Deb knows the legal requirements. She is training me to be a proper SD handler too. He has truly become a dog who happily is of service. She sends me videos of his progress.

I am the owner of the German Shepherd that was seen being trained at the park. I have been using Vigilant K9 for a couple of months and will continue to do so. With a large breed dog, I needed help to prevent her from being aggressive towards other dogs, kids, and adults. She is still a puppy and needs to learn how to react or in this case not react in different situations. When she went after the chihuahua, I fell to the ground trying to hold her back, both trainers immediately got involved to prevent the situation from escalating. My dog was never punched or kicked, she was manually removed from the situation by the trainer before the chihuahua or it’s owner were physically injured. From everything I have seen in both individual and group training sessions, Vigilant K9 trainers have always used methods appropriate for the dog breed/size , behaviors, and particular situations.

Deb is a superb trainer. Her knowledge of dog's behavior is incredible. She can help with the most difficult dogs. Deb does a very good job of explaining everything she does so the dog owner understands what they are doing wrong and how to correct it. I recommend her very highly.

Still working with Deb, but she's been great. She's working as much on training us as she is our dog. Looking forward to the progress as we are already seeing it.

We started working with Deb, the owner, 6 weeks ago with our golden retriever puppy. She has helped us with our puppy and works on specific behaviors that we are encountering. She tailors her training to each individual dog. She always has lots of good dog information to share. I would highly recommend her!

We appreciated that she listened to us regarding the issues we are having with our dog and then addressed how she would approach training. She didn't have a one size fits all. She was very professional.

My German Shepherd was 7 months old when I found Vigilant K9. She was aggressive, and very reactive both towards humans and other dogs. I found Vigilant K9 and sent my request to them with some information about my dog. Deb reached out immediately and was very quick to respond. She talked to me about the services she offers, she asked more in depth questions about the dog, and she provided the certifications she yields as well as the amount of years she has been training dogs. Shortly after the initial contact, we scheduled a time and day to assess my dog. Deb and Raymond came out to my residence and instantly knew how to react with my dog, they knew what needed to be done, where we needed to start, and already started forming a game plan to work towards. My dog is now 10 months old, and since that day, it is as if I have a completely different dog. Each week Deb and Raymond came over, there was improvements every single time. They showed my family and I how to correct the human error side of pet training, as well as how to interact and handle the dog. They showed us proper technique, as well as key indicators, and how to read the dogs body language. They really know there stuff, and the experience they claim to have definitely shows. We have had around 8-10 training sessions, and I can now take my people/dog reactive puppy to Lowes and to parks with other dogs. My puppy can do basic obedience commands which consists of sit, down, stay, leave it, etc. My dog also used to be a puller on the leash, however after working with Deb and Raymond, we can now heel and loose leash walk through stores and parks with ease. We have also worked on long line sit/stays and down/stays - before Deb and Raymond I could barely be 2ft away from my pup, now I can put her in a stay and walk out 30ft or more, without her moving until I recall her. Deb is also very flexible with hectic schedules and will always suggest alternate training times when something comes up. I am a full time student and work full time, and Deb and worked with my schedule very graciously. As with any pet training, there it is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into it. You get what you put into it. Deb and Raymond will show you and provide you with the tools needed for training, but you have to do the homework and maintain the same 100% commitment they are putting forth otherwise you are not benefiting your dog. Everyone can have their own opinion, but some of the negative reviews that are listed, I feel are a bad misrepresentation of Vigilant K9 as a company. I have seen the changes within my own dog, and I have seen the changes within some of the other clients dogs Vigilant K9 has done, and it is honestly amazing. I have never met someone who is more enthusiastic, more attentive, goal-orientated, and truly caring about dogs than Deb and Raymond - not to mention more knowledgeable on the subject matter as well. They truly want the best for yourself, your family, and your dog and will do anything in their power to make sure that you have a strong foundation and relationship with your pet.

We are only two sessions in but her training so far has made a definite difference. Our rescue dogs are more relaxed and seem more responsive. She has dispelled many myths we had in our heads and is helping us deal with the repercussions of behavior issues a local training facilities' out-dated techniques aggravated. She knows what she is doing!!!

Just getting started with training. Spoken to Deb. She provided all the information on training and gave us a preview of what we can expect. We have 2 dogs. We’re having Deb help us train Barkley, our youngest. She showed us how she took the reins with Dailey, our oldest who was never formally trained. She made such a difference with Daisy in just the hour she spent talking to us. Very impressive. Daisy barks at anyone she does not know. Deb had her eating out of her hand in 1/2 hour. I never saw Daisy so changed in such a short time.

I have had private lessons for a while and am now getting involved in some of their group training and it has been amazing. I have a stubborn, reactive, little doxie, who was 1 year and a half when I got him, and they have been great in helping me learn how to train Cooper and helping him socialize. He is still learning and we still have work to do, but the progress Copper and I have made is amazing. And it is thanks to them! Cooper knows sit, stay, down, come, and heel, without hesitation and I am learning how to communicate with him in ways that he learns as a dog. I have learned so much, not just Cooper. He is able to go to the park with other dogs around without being reactive! We are still working on it around our home, but the progress is apparent! Don't let one unsatisfied customer deter you from contacting them. You can't please everyone, I don't know if he expected magic or didn't realize he had to continue the training, but all businesses will have someone complain. I have had great success with Cooper under their tutelage and we are both continuing to learn. It seems to me that there is more than meets the eye with that negative review. I have met other students and they seem very pleased with Deb and Ray's techniques and compassion. As am I. Their love of animals is apparent and they want nothing more than to help us and our beloved companions break bad habits and have happy relationships. They are both professional and have had many years of experience and you can see that in their dogs when you first meet them. They are patient and understanding in training both you and your dog.

On January 5, I gave Deb and Raymond 5 stars and described them as follows: "Efficient, effective and cheerful training using positive reinforcement. Deb and Raymond understand dogs and love working with them." I have continued to bring my dog to them since then, and I continue to be highly impressed. I saw a recent negative review by someone else, and I feel strongly enough about the value of Deb and Raymond's services that I couldn't help but respond. What the negative reviewer said doesn't match my experience or that of the other clients of Deb and Raymond's who I have met. In fact, if what he says was true, they would have to be schizophrenic. I think that, for whatever reason, the guy is being less than honest and appears to have some issues that don't involve Deb and Raymond. I can truly say that Deb and Raymond are very careful in explaining what the dog’s owner must do to ensure that training takes full effect and remains in effect. They are very polite and professional in all their dealings.  Above all, their training is extremely effective. I believe that the many, very positive reviews of Deb and Raymond (including mine) reflect what a customer can expect.  (Their average rating, not including the clearly malicious one, is over 4-1/2 stars.) I continue to recommend them highly. If you let them help your dog (and you) to reach a new level of understanding and obedience, you won't regret it.

I am just in the early stages, but Elizabeth has been very responsive and has gone the extra mile in meeting our needs. She honestly and clearly explains the whole process and has educated me on so many things already in just the first few days of our meeting. She has found a dog that meets our needs and is taking care of all the logistics in getting it here. I am looking forward to working with her during the training process.

I contacted Elizabeth because I was not as prepared as I thought for the new puppy I got. I am on a fixed income and Elizabeth was very accommodating. We worked out a fee and training plan and I am extremely happy with both her knowledge and methods. She is very professional and courteous. There is SO much more to teaching a dog than I could have anticipated, but Elizabeth has been patient and very accessible as far as being able to contact her with questions. I highly recommend her.
