It was great working with Josh and Steve at Red Mesa Homes on two projects. One was to renovate a garage wall to accommodate my long truck. The other was to remove an old water heater and install a new one up to code. Josh listened to what I wanted, especially the importance of communicating with me as the projects progressed. He lived up to his word and I really trust him. Steve was very professional, knowledgeable and an excellent craftsman. The cost of both projects was fair. I’d hire them again in a heartbeat!

Hired on Thumbtack

I paid average prices for below-average work from Red Mesa. What should have been a simple dining room remodel turned into a frustrating experience.

During the project, my windowsill was broken, my door was dented, and the crew left cigarette smoke odors in my home. When I initially raised concerns, one of the partners minimized the issues and acted as though they were not serious. They only began apologizing once it became clear how poorly the work had been done.

I was never informed that my windowsill had been damaged. I discovered it myself when I checked on the room and saw that the trim was broken. I had to ask Josh, the owner, what happened, and he confirmed that it had occurred during the work. I tried to be understanding and gave them the opportunity to fix it. Unfortunately, the repair was done very poorly. The broken piece was glued back on and painted over, with no sanding, filler, or effort to make it look like one continuous piece.

From my perspective, issues like this seemed to result from careless and sloppy workmanship rather than an effort to complete the job properly. I also gave them another chance to correct additional mistakes. For example, hair was embedded in the paint due to poor preparation. When I asked them to fix it, they painted over the hair instead of properly correcting the surface. I think they started painting before the texture was fully dry. They also left without putting my outlet covers back on, and they lost the screws.

There was also sloppy paint work left on the ceiling and trim, and they did not even leave the leftover ceiling paint so that the mistakes could be corrected later. The only paint they left was the wall color, which makes it more difficult to fix their work.

Demolition was scheduled with two workers, but only Stephen arrived, and the work progressed very slowly. The project was originally expected to take about 4 days, but the crew ended up staying in my home for 8 days.

With that amount of time spent on a small dining room project, I expected the final work to be careful and well finished. Unfortunately, the results did not reflect that.

I work full-time, am a doctoral candidate, and have two dogs. I do not have the time or energy to repeatedly have contractors in my home because the work was not done the first time correctly.

Josh had no problem collecting payment for the project, despite the damage and the quality of the work. I think I paid about 3.1K for this job. That experience left me seriously questioning the professionalism and integrity of this company.

Stephen mentioned that they have had to return to other homes to fix issues for customers, but suggested those situations were due to difficult clients. Based on my experience and the photos of the work in my home, I came away with a very different impression. Because of this, I seriously question the reliability of the five-star reviews I saw for Red Mesa before hiring them.

I would also like to add that they did not use a workman's light until I told them to bring one in to see the issues.

This was my first time hiring a contractor through Thumbtack, and it was a learning experience. I will not use Thumbtack again and will use a legitimate business.

I rarely get this upset about things, but the situation was overwhelming enough that I lost sleep for several nights worrying about how I had been taken advantage of.

I am very glad I decided not to proceed with additional work, such as flooring installation, with this company.
