Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Sampson removed flooring (carpet, wood laminate and vinyl tile) in 3 rooms and replaced it with porcelain/ceramic tile. Initially, I didn't order enough tile for the closets, so Sampson came back when the order came in to finish the job. He was friendly, professional, and did an outstanding job. I could not be more happy with the results! I will definitely us Three Feathers Tile and Marble again and proudly recommend them to anyone needing work done!

Al installed new tile flooring in 2.5 baths, 1 laundry room and a tile back splash in the kitchen. His work is beautifully done. Al doesn't lay tile-he is an artist. Looking at some of the work he has done I didn't think I could afford him - but he is reasonable, on time, showed up when he said he would. Was WONDERFUL to work with-did beautiful work. Would hire him again and highly recommend him! Couldn't have asked for better. - Thanks Al :)

Jaime did excellent work replacing a shower pan and broken tiles in a shower. His work was completed as quickly as he promised and the work came out beautifully. Jaime was sensitive to my budget as this was a project for a rental property, but the final product showed how much pride Jaime takes in his work. No doubt I will hire Jaime again.

Oh my gosh, where do I start? These guys were fantastic! Not only were their prices extraordinarily competitive, they worked overtime to get our tile job done in a timeframe that was 2-3 days shorter than any other estimate I got. Their crew was great--always professional, punctual, and super friendly. Next year we will be doing a larger renovation project and my first call will be to M & M Flooring!

We hired Elite Luxury Design to fix our shower, which included a new shower pan, new plumbing, and new tile. I am so glad we found them because the work they did was outstanding. They were incredibly thorough from the start of the process. Matt came to our house and it was very professional, a far cry from other experiences we have had with contractors. The communication leading up to our project was excellent and the installers, Carlos and Diego, were kind, friendly, kept everything very clean, and very importantly to us, kept us in the loop with each step they took so we knew how the shower was constructed and could have peace of mind that it was going to work for us for a long time. During the course of our tile project, we also asked if they could replace flooring in both bathrooms in our house. They brought us samples the next day and replaced the flooring that day! All around our experience was excellent and Elite Luxury Design will be the first company we look for if we need redesign or work done in our home.

Hernan and his crew were great! The job was not easy remove tile that was laid incorrectly with the wrong material and fix a unleveled floor. Not too mention the other rooms needing carpet removal and old vinyl/laminate removal. The quote was better than the others received plus the fact they said 3-4 days to finish the front room, dining room, kitchen, hallways, and 2 bathrooms and met that time frame AMAZING! we also had them do our baseboards and a few other things that came up there was never any hesitation and they were more than willing to help. These men were honest, hard working, and trustworthy. We will definitely be hiring them again. If you want the best look no further. Thank you for everything you did our floors are beautiful and we are extremely happy customers!

Matt was very professional and had a presentation of the company and what they offer. The price was perfect for my budget. He answered all questions that I had. Carlos did the install and was always on time and kept me updated on the work. He was very detailed about what he was going to do and had me participate in how I wanted things done. He found flaws in work done by previous contractors and helped me decide how to work with those issues. He assured me my tile would be beautiful and it was. I absolutely love how my kitchen came out and will be using Elite again very soon for other projects. When the work was done, Matt did a follow up call with me. I felt confident in their work and I'm happy to have chosen them.
