I had company coming in to town and was short on time. Ray worked with me to get the job done in a short period of time and was able to work on many areas of my house in one cleaning. I'm looking forward to working with Ray again on some more detailed work in the future and will provide further feedback!

These guys are fantastic! Showed up and worked diligently until the move was completed. Moved from 3rd floor apartment to a house! Handled the stairs like pro’s! Very pleased with the value and work they did!

Marcelo's landscaping service was prompt and excellent, both inside my Father's house and outside. They not only did the yard and super cleaned the house, but they also helped me move boxes and other things that needed to be done due to his passing. This company is wonderful, compassionate, and well worth the price!

I read all the great reviews about Cal and that's what made me decide to choose to work with him. He did a great job installing my dog door from the living room to outside the house. It looks great! He was responsive, punctual, polite, and very reasonable in price. He apparently does all types of handyman jobs so I'll definitely use him again when needed.

We hired P.O.W.E.R for a complex flat roof project and also interior drywall patching. Albert showed a great deal of expertise, professionalism, and patience throughout the project. His crew members were consistently on time, polite, working diligently while on site. They have great pride and craftsmanship which showed well in the final results. They removed the existing flat roof and surrounding pony walls cleanly. They installed a new flat roof which has not leaked from initial rain tests. The drywall interior work looks good as well, textured to match and ready to paint. We hired P.O.W.E.R. a week after completing the initial roof project to put a 2x6 redwood deck on top of the flat roof. The deck looks amazing and we look forward to hiring P.O.W.E.R. for our future house construction needs.

Three guys showed up to do the work and did an excellent job. They replaced several cracked floor tiles due to settling foundation. Their work looks better than the original builders.

We hired Jamie and his crews for several projects at our house. He was originally hired for our concrete patio that we eventually covered. We're the pictured house with the red rock. We then brought him back to tile our kitchen and three bathrooms. He also installed outlets in the cabinets for our under cabinet lighting....and he installed the lights without an extra charge! Finally, Jaime was able to bail us out when our landscaping went wrong. The crew we hired originally did not install a functional irrigation system...if you can believe that! I asked Jaime if he knew of someone who could help, and the next Monday we had an associate of his working on the system. They really came through and got it up and running!! Jaime is terrific...and so are the guys he works with! I highly recommend them for any home or business projects!

I hired Hemakana Builders for a kitchen tile job. The owner, Michael Nonies, did such an amazing job on the tile that I asked him if he could also do electrical work. He is very good with the electrical work also. He installed a light fixture above our bar and made such a clean job of it, that it looks original to the ceiling. He is very tidy with his work, no matter what he's doing, he keeps the area clean. Michael is very talented and can do beautiful work of almost any kind. I will call on him again whenever I need anything done. There were also times when I had to leave him alone in the home, and I had complete confidence in his trustworthiness. Thank you Thumbtack for bringing such competent tradesmen to my door.

My Water Heater pipe broke in my house and flooded almost my entire house at least 1/2 inch enough to ruin my flooring, walls and doors. Jody was quickly to respond. He worked with my insurance and even upgraded my floors, painted the entire inside of my house, fixed items that were not covered by insurance all for the amount the insurance gave me. I didn't have to come out of pocket for anything he did and I have a brand new house, better then before. He did everything in the timeline he told me. We had contact daily and sometimes even a few time a day. I would recommend him to anyone. Thank you for giving me a beautiful home.

Michael was hired to revitalize our 1970's home and bring it into the 21st century. We had a vision and he was able to make it come to life. Michael was professional, knowledgeable and most of all sensitive to the fact that our family was in the house. He cleaned his equipment up every day and made sure that all debre and trash was removed. The final result provides functionality as well as an up dated look consistent with newer homes. I will definitely call Lost Arts for any further home remodeling jobs. Thanks for the hard work.

Erik did my backsplash in my kitchen. The job was complicated and Erik did a great job addressing my concerns as the job progressed. I stopped him many, many times throughout the job to ask him questions and he never lost his patience or made me feel as though my concerns were insignificant. His customer service is top notch.

My fridge broke down Saturday. The handyman was able to make it to my house the next day. The fridge is working and I didn’t lose any food. This guy’s work is worth much more than he charges. 10/10 would use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
