Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contacted them for moving a piano. They were not able to support. Didn't give a reason. Not sure it was the time I requested, or they couldn't move a piano.

Adam was the fastest (and only) vendor to get back to me. I was impressed with his response time, ability to set up my moving appointment and employees used for my project. Kevin and Jose were the movers assigned to us. They we're great! They were friendly, courteous, helpful and offered the use of there tools for somethings I needed to address. They didn't dilly-dally, getting right into the move and needed no 'supervising' by me. While their earlier moved delayed the start time of ours, Kevin contacted me about the delay and I appreciated the fact he did that. Delays happen, but clear communication of that makes it understandable & acceptable. I appreciated that. We're two part movers meaning we moved locally from our apartment to our house. We have 4 large UHaul moving containers coming from out-of-state and will be using them again.

These guys are amazing!! We had to change our move date a few times because of issues with the new house. Nick was so patient and flexible. Faith Moving literally takes the stress out of moving. I was worried about how much we had not been able to get done/packed by our (final) scheduled move date, but the guys came in and knocked it all out. They jumped right in and got everything done for us. They’re top notch!!!!!

We did three moves, one right after another and the 2 gentlemen that were loading never once slowed down. They came in and got right to work and kept up the pace for 5 hours. Everything was moved successfully, everything was put where we wanted it and nothing was damaged or broken. I would recommend them to anyone that has to move!

Overall moving of furniture and fixtures went well despite arriving an hour late. However - our biggest problem was that they agreed they could move our Nuclear Imaging Camera. They promised to arrive at 2:30pm but were several hours late. We were very clear that our Nuclear Imaging techs HAD to be there to supervise the move. Our Nuclear Tech waited until 4pm and had to leave (don't know when Midnight Movers actually did show up), but we left explicit instructions with the guys moving our furn & fixtures (same employees of Midnight Movers) that they could NO LONGER move this piece of equipment and the moving of this Camera would have to be rescheduled. We called the owner, Adam, multiple time but he did not return any of our frantic calls while this was happening. We explicitly told his crew that they could NOT move the Nuclear Camera several times. We were shocked when Midnight Movers delivered our Nuclear Camera around 6:30pm without our permission to do so - i.e. without our Nuclear Tech supervising. Worse yet, they damaged it and did not have the integrity to mention this. I understand accidents happen, but not taking responsibility for it is completely unacceptable. It is obvious that they dropped it as parts were literally broken in pieces and a large part was so bent out of shape it won't go back into it's original position. Another part has completely come loose. As of today, just two working days after this move, this company won't return my calls. Looks like we will be getting lawyered up pretty quick which is totally unnecessary - all we need is for the owner to put in an insurance claim to resolve this situation. Final verdict - do not use Midnight Movers for anything that is valuable to you - and if you do use them, don't expect them to have the integrity to take responsibility for their actions.

I needed to move on a Sunday, and Adam had no problems accommodating either the day or the time. The the two young men who came to load and unload my boxes were polite and very careful with my belongings. They loaded everything up, drove it to the new place and unloaded it very quickly and efficiently. I could not have been more pleased with the awesome service I received during this move. Midnight movers made this transition painless and I will be using them again. I would recommend them to anyone I know who needs a hand moving. 😀

I was charged $85/hour. The truck they brought was too small so it took 3 trips for the move. Luckily I was only moving a couple of blocks away but that would have really added up for someone moving further. I assumed they would have people packing the house and the movers would take what they could at the same time. However the packers came first and were alone so I paid $85(2 hours) = $170 to have 2 people work. I wish I made $42 an hour putting stuff in a box! The good news is the packers and the movers did a great job and were friendly. This place is wayyy to expensive for the service provided. I would recommend choosing a different company unless price is no object. (Updated 3/15/2017 @ 9:18am) I updated my review in response to the company's reply. I recently left the military and I am very, very familiar with moving. In fact I have moved every single year for the past 4 years. This company is not competitively priced. This move usually costs me around $500. He indicated in his reply that he charged me $600, that is a lie - I have the check in front of me it was $681.63. See attached for proof. Previously I completed my move with U-haul approved movers, I have removed the company's names but you can find them easily. Below are their prices per hour. $40/h $54.97/h $60/h $45/h $55/h $39/h $40/h $110/h $59.99/h $40/h $60/h For my particular house renting the truck would have been $100 for the day which would include gas, pick up and drop off mileage, and tax. If you took $55/h for 7 hours it would cost $385+$100=$485 and you can just round up to $500 for $71.42/h. That would include 2 people helping you pack and move. They charged me $85/hour to have 2 people pack for 2 hours. I doubt the company is compensating the packers at a $42.50/h rate - haha. They could have easily packed the kitchen and had the movers load the truck with with all the other boxes/furniture that was ready to be moved. If they did that, the move would have taken under 6 hours and their price would have been good. However, the packers were there from 9-11 am and the movers were there from 1-6:30 pm. The move could have been completed even faster but the moving truck they supplied was too small to take all my belongings so they had to take THREE trips. Luckily the new and old house are only about 5 minutes apart but that could really add up so WARNING to anyone who is having them move you a further distance. I would like to reiterate that the packers and the movers did excellent work. The company has a high hourly rate and is less efficient than others. I cannot recommend this company based on the price alone. If price is no object then go ahead. Be careful out there everybody!

Our move was from Santa Fe to Rio Rancho, NM. I was very happy with the job the two movers did. They worked hard and efficiently and took good care of our belongings. They were also very pleasant to deal with and worked with me to get all the furniture and boxes in the right locations in the new house.

They arrived right on time and ready to go! I described to Adam what was there to move and he sent 3 guys to help make it happen in a decent time. We had a four bedroom house and a fully assembled crossfit gym and moved it into a 3 story house. It was packed, loaded, and unloaded in 5 hours flat. The guys were very friendly, courteous and everything I asked them to be careful with they absolutely were. Adam answered every call or text I sent, even while the job was going and I had questions. Jeff and AJ were awesome and I'd definitely hire them again when/if we move!

Adam and his entire team was excellent and here was why. 1. Adam was very generous with his price to move my parents from one retirement home to another. 2. The packers were on time amd very respectful of my parents and their belongings. 3. The movers were on time courteous and careful (not one item broke or scratched). The entire team was professional and went above and beyond. TIP BIG because they earned every penny. Would DEFINITELY use again.
