Our dog (rescued 1.5 years ago) had major issues with jumpiness, and being afraid of everything, especially men. We suspect he was abused in a past life. Because of these things, we were nervous about him going away with Robert. After the week with Robert, being exposed to many different situations he was returned to us with a new confidence. He has been way more relaxed at home and less intimidated by new environments. We attend Robert's ongoing classes for added training. It's awesome to see what our dog is capable of and with us getting the right training, we are better pack leaders for him too. I highly recommend Robert's services for any dog training need. He has a way with them!

We adopted our little guy, Buddy, from a shelter in October of 2016. The poor guy was only ten months old and we were already his fourth (and forever!) home -- he had a lot of anxiety, he would tear things up if left alone for even a few minutes, and it was impossible to walk him due to all the pulling. When I found Karen, I was kind of at my wit's end. Karen called me back before the end of that day and we scheduled an evaluation. We went for seven sessions of private training, and not only is Buddy is a totally different dog now, but I'm a much better dog owner/Dad and our daughters are having a lot more fun with their little bro. Karen is obviously awesome at training dogs, but what she's really doing is teaching YOU all the techniques to be a good leader, which I really needed. Buddy is a much more confident and relaxed dog, and going on walks and playing with him are now really enjoyable for all of us and not mentally and physically exhausting. More great things about Karen: she's punctual, flexible, and very communicative. Also -- and this is important -- she totally knows what she's doing. She was firm but always very loving and gentle with Buddy. She loves what she does and she goes beyond the call of duty and I wish I would of met her sooner We continue our session tomorrow . I feel confident that we can continue and go even further with training (maybe we'll certify Buddy to be a Therapy " dog next, ), but occasionally I might need a pep talk to not feel bad about being "the boss." Karen has been able to read me very well, and even though tomorrow is our last session she makes me feel like I could text her any time if I had any additional questions or needed advice or a pep talk. The sessions were SO worth the investment!! Karen Thank you so much and I hope your ready for the next dog we are considering after the Magic you did working with Buddy .

Our Sophie is one year old and has had many challenges to keeping her attention on task. Kerri was informative and compassionate! She helped Sophie, and us, learn new skill sets in a kind but consistent way. We are so happy with the results we have seen with Sophie's ability to learn, walk on leash calmly and act more appropriately in our house. We're looking forward to all our continued learning. Thankyou Kerri for a VERY professional job well done! We HIGHLY recommend Kerri for your dog training issues.

Desiree was great with my 10 year old granddaughter and her Norfolk Terrier rescue puppy. They both learned to listen and follow instructions. Obedience training was successful for them both. Desiree was very compassionate and flexible with our last minute schedule conflicts.

The Off Leash Training team was great! After thinking that my three legged mischief maker and his four legged brother couldn't be trained, I realized I was very much mistaken. From the first lesson on I saw constant improvement with my dogs and couldn't wait to go back. I wouldn't let anyone else train my dogs.

Very professional! My dog is chasing cars up my driveway. Tyler got to know the dog, explained the various techniques that could be used. He walked through the pros and cons of each. He decided to go with the most basic. Spent an over an hour at my house and trained both myself and my dog.

Natasha has been an excellent help in successfully training my German Shepherd, showing me techniques that I may have not have learned outside of her skilled lessons. She has been training both me and my puppy which has given mysti and I a chance to form a life long bond of obedience and understanding. Although we are still training, and will be for awhile longer, I know that I can depend on Natasha for any training obstacles we may encounter, and together we will overcome...I will highly recommend her to everyone.

About

No single training method is best for every dog; we find the best method that works for you and your dog! I do personal consultation and evaluation in your home. Sometimes all that's needed to correct a situation is establishing pack leadership. By evaluating the environment and the behavior of your pet(s), I can often help get everybody going in a direction that will correct the problem behavior. I offer private lessons in your home or at my location. My private lessons vary according to your preference for involvement. I can work with you to teach your dog two or three basic, much-needed commands in a few sessions while you do more practice in between sessions. If you prefer to practice less in between, we can get together for additional private lessons. Lessons covered are come, sit, stay, down, off and leave it. These basic commands can and do solve a host of issues, like leash pulling, jumping, mouthing and some aggression issues. Consultations can be arranged to meet your busy schedule. We will only take a limited number of dogs for training at any one time to ensure that your dog gets the individual attention that he/she can best benefit from and deserves.

My name is Guy Yeaman. I have been professionally training dogs for over 45 years. I offer group obedience classes (both basic and advanced), private in-home classes, tracking, protection, Schutzhund, and in-board training at my home. My classes can be found in Reno, Sparks, Incline Village, Stateline, South Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Gardnerville. I use repetition and praise methods. There are many training tools available. Each has its use. I use some; some, I do not. I would be happy to explain the purpose and usage of any training tool and my opinion of when they are useful and when they are not. My basic obedience classes run $80-82 for a 6-week course (other rates available on inquiry). I guarantee results. Some dogs simply take longer to learn than others. You may bring your dog back to as many classes as it takes for it to learn for no extra charge.

About

My family has a strong history with training own dogs and caring for them like own children. I have trained our own dogs how to sit, play dead, heal, stay, shake, and roll over. I enjoy the company of dogs as they provide healing to the heart and mind. My grandmother takes her wire fox terriers to dog shows around the US and taught me a various amount of skills, such as grooming and training.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
