So far I've had a great experience with Rocky and my lessons. I reached out to him seeking help with piano and music theory to give me extra help with what I'm learning in my online music theory course and so far everything he's been going over has been spot on with my online course. The extra help is definitely useful. Today will be my 5th lesson with rocky and so far we've gone over a brief history of where the piano originated, we've gone over the layout of the piano, white and black keys, sharps and flats, correct posture, we've gotten into intervals, major scale, correct fingering of different major scales, circle of fifths, and have gotten just began getting into the minor scale. He's worked with me playing the piano with both hands and over just a weeks time I've gotten a lot better at it which is awesome. Rocky's prices are competitive and i like how he's doing it to give back to the community which is great! Definitely recommend rocky to anyone seeking lessons in piano or music theory. Thanks Rocky!

I have been working with Tommy for over a year now. I am a 46 year old who has decided to pick up a guitar for the first time and I must say that I love it and Tommy always makes it demanding, yet fun. He analyses where I am in my own work week relative to what is a new "hobby" and estimates what sort of growth I need and can handle that week. He also is great with advanced communication and flexibility of schedule. This is great as I travel for work and am a parent, both of which require a small degree of flexibility with advanced notice and Tommy delivers on that. My work has recently moved me abroad and Tommy has provided lessons electronically to keep me busy while I am getting settled in and adjusted in my new home and has now worked me back into his schedule. He is a professional in his management of his schedule and his students. As far as his music ability, Tommy is a master. He has the academic credentials to match his musical experience. When you hire Tommy, you aren't getting a washed up musician, you are getting a passionate teaching professional who has had significant performing experience. Initially, I thought the idea of a Skype lesson was ridiculous. However, after over 12 months of working with Tommy, I can truly say you won't find a better deal out there for your dollar.

Alberto Abril was my guitar teacher for about two years and he transformed me from almost a complete beginner into a knowledgeable and experienced player. He taught me the necessary components of guitar playing by working on the songs, genres, and skills which I was interested in and enjoyed. Through this method, I learned the parts of music which are necessary for one to learn to become a better guitar player and which some people would consider boring in a fun and engaging way. Alberto is an extremely talented guitar player and he can basically teach and play any genre of music. The lessons he taught me spanned from Jazz to rock and even to classical. On top of this, he is also an excellent teacher. His best trait as guitar teacher is that he can explain the most difficult of lessons in a way that even someone with no experience in music could understand. I am extremely thankful for the time I got with Alberto as my teacher due to the great amount that I learned from him, how much better I became at guitar playing, and how well Alberto was at teaching the subject. I would definitely recommend Alberto Abril as a guitar teacher to anyone who wants to learn how to play guitar or to enhance their skills as guitar players.

      About

I am a one-man band with a 7-10 piece 'group sound'. I have programmed and sequenced the background tracks while singing and playing the guitar live. I have a 'vocalist' that also replicates my voice so that harmonies are also present where typically needed. With my state-of-the-art equipment, you'd think I had a whole group performing with me. I've performed for many social events including: weddings, business socials, school and church activities, community and civic events and many lounges and bars. I've done a few charitable functions as well. I play piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, violin and drums. I specialize in rock and roll, r & b, pop and country rock and can accommodate most age groups with tremendous variety. I have dance music as well as entertainment quality music performing classics of the last 40 years. I've been functioning in this capacity for over 15 years and have worked in many professional settings including performing on TV on a few occasions. I've emceed and performed for many pageants including the Jr. Miss Pageant in UT for several years. My forte comes down to the variety and selection of music to accommodate many age-groups, and tastes. I make it wholesome yet a very fun night of non-stop music using the 'classics' familiar to all. My minimum rate is $300/performance but if you want 3 or more hours I can perform for a flat fee of $350-450 depending on where you are located. I mostly charge to pay for the equipment, hauling the equipment as well as the traveling costs, but call me and we'll negotiate what works for you.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
