"I think when you hire a stylist, you should be willing to let them 'take the wheel'... I've avoided hiring a stylist for a long time because I I want someone who understands being a working mom, with a limited budget, and I've been nervous about engaging someone who would view me as a 'human hanger.' I have a strong sense of personal style and comfort, but I knew that I was not dressing to flatter my shape. I asked Three Hangers to identify the best way to dress for my shape and to create a short list of clothing I could mix and match for best effect (I'm a bit of a minimalist). I appreciated that Three Hangers took time to get to know my daily life, my comfort level, and my current wardrobe before making suggestions. She took time to get to know my shopping habits (thrift first, then online shopping), budget (quality at the least cost possible), and daily life (VERY busy working mom and online video personality). After an initial consult, I approved a 3 hour package of basic consulting. We did this via Skype as we're separated by a large geographic distance. She asked me to send several selfies in my daily life along with comments. I think this really helped her figure out what I was actively doing and my personality. She also did a closet assessment was firm in identifying areas of weakness in my current wardrobe, using my most used clothing. I appreciated that she was firm in identifying BOTH problems in the wardrobe and areas of strength in my figure that I should be emphasizing. Three Hangers had no problems telling me where I was going wrong AND she had no problems encouraging me to step out of my insecurities and emphasize what I have going on.... After sending the selfies and the Skype video closet assessment, she sent a spreadsheet (keep, adjust, buy, discard) utilizing my current wardrobe and suggestions for additions/subtractions and a Pinterest Board, which included a 'color story' for my fall purchases and visual aids. I am still in the process of purchasing the items similar to what she suggested, but from my current wardrobe I have tried a few types/shapes/combinations of clothing I never would have before, and a new color I was too insecure to try before, and have received high compliments from friends and family. I got my first 'WOW' ever - so that felt nice. :-) The total ended up being 4 hours, instead of 3. I feel like it was a good value proposition and sincerely should have taken 4 hours, given what she accomplished and suggested. I don't believe she actually would have charged me, but she had mentioned in passing she'd actually spent some extra time than budgeted, so I actually asked her to bill me for the extra hour. I also budgeted for a couple of extra hours recently, so I would have the freedom to show her what I put together and help confirm that I was hitting the marks she suggested or tweak it if I was missing the mark. If you're looking to book her.... Please note: I myself am somewhat of a minimalist with a great deal of flexibility and ability to take risks and a strong ability to execute orders (ie shop from a list). My experience will be yours, if you are like me. However... If you are looking for a LOT of evaluation (more than 20-30 hangers in your closet/pieces to evaluate) OR If you have a tendency to get uncomfortable with big changes/suggestions and need more in depth conversation OR if you want a deep and full assessment - including a once over of the finished project... You probably should budget about 7-8 hours for the consulting. AND If you are looking to have Three Hangers actually shop FOR you, you may have to double this. Be absolutely clear in what you want, and discuss it honestly with her before engaging so that you both have a wonderful experience, as I did. 10/10, will probably engage again for a Spring Update. Highly recommend."

"So I bit the bullet and hired a personal stylist during home leave. Here's what I did: I sent Rose ahead of time a Pinterest board of outfits I liked. We met at Nordstrom's for a 3-hour session. She arrived an hour earlier to pick out outfits for me to try ahead of time. The first jeans I tried on, from Wit and Wisdom, were amazing! I have never been able to find "boyfriend jeans" that fit right, and these did! She also found a pair of dark wash skinny jeans from J Crew that were flattering. These two finds alone, saved time, frustration, and was worth the consult. I then tried on several other jeans/pants/tops, and found a few that I liked, and ruled out others. She found a cute sweater that effortlessly mimics the half tuck. Unfortunately, all of the tops that she picked out were drop waist peplums, that did not hit me at the right place. I am having one altered to raise the peplum to my waist and to insert darts. She also brought out a swingy sweatshirt with ruffle sleeve and hem that I'm surprised I loved. (I normally go for more structured tops). I decided to get it taken in just a tad, and can't wait to wear it! We then went out on the shopping floor to look for more items. Not sure why, but I gravitated to a pair of skinny fatigues by Wit and Wisdom, and gaucho pants. And though I love color, there wasn't anything colorful on the floor. It was all black, navy, neutrals. All in all, I picked up 4 bottoms (3 jeans, 1 pair of red pants), 10 tops, and 4 jackets. While I didn't have time to style them into outfits, they are all basics that I'm confident I can incorporate into my existing weekend wardrobe. Styling these pieces was really more about statement necklaces- which I have plenty of at home."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

How much does a style consultant cost?

If you’re ready to upgrade your look, you’re ready to work with an image consultant. The national average cost for a style consultant ranges from $120 to $200. An image consultant helps you pinpoint the look you’re trying to present to the world and steers you toward the clothing, hairstyles and accessories that will achieve it. Having an image makeover can boost self-confidence, help you portray a more professional work look, let go of styles that no longer suit you, and find the best fits and colors for you. Style consultation is for any gender or age. Rates for image style consultants can vary depending on where you live and the consultant’s background, reputation and training. Here are some examples of average costs for image consultant services:

  • Hourly rate for personal styling and personal shopping: $55-$100 per hour, depending on your location.
  • Fashion consultation: $500 for 3 hours. Includes a full assessment of closet and personal style goals of client.
