We are selling our house and needed some minor repairs to the ceramic tile in a bathtub and shower. The house is 29 years old. One tile was missing. Michael looked all over Reno for a match. He found one that was a good match. He cleaned all the grout, re-grouted as needed and reattached the loose and missing tiles. He showed up when he said he would. He is very friendly and billed us as he quoted the job. It was a fair price for the work. Thanks, Dave and Denise E.

My sprinkler system was in severe need of help and Travis came to the rescue? With 5 zones and multiple sprinkler heads per zone, there were many issues. Travis was methodical in his approach and found the water pressure low. Ultimately, he fixed a leak that was causing the low pressure - it could have been a huge problem as it was close to the house. He also fixed many other aspects of the system. Travis clearly is very capable and I would use him again for this and much bigger jobs as he is thorough, capable, professional, responsive and provided excellent service.

I removed a dog door from the back of my house and it left a large 18"x 24" hole in my stucco. Desert Pine Builders patched, repaired and painted the stucco to match my house. They did a great job!

I had John come out to fix part of an exterior door frame and weather stripping that my last roommate's dog tore up as well as a weathered/warped board on the back of my house. He responded to my project request very quickly and we worked out the details of appointment and payment via text where I also sent him a few pictures for the job. Spoke on Tuesday afternoon, he came on Thursday at 9 and was right on time with pretty much everything he needed. He had to run out for parts once but can't be mad about that since he came out to see the job and do the job all in the same day. Very friendly guy and was super patient with my dog barking every time he came in and out (which was a lot). Would definitely recommend him again, his price was unbeatable and he was a very nice man!

First time using this service so i wasn't sure of what to expect, but hiring Lawrence to install a fence/gate on my moms house was a great experience, not only was Lawrence very knowledgeable but very friendly as well. The results were very professional, the gate looks very well and very secured. He explained everything to me as he went along with the project. My mom feels so much safer in her home. I will be contacting Lawrence in the future should any other projects should arise.

Danny helped us with three different electrical needs in our new house. He was so professional from start to finish. He and Louie were friendly, helpful and cleaned up after themselves. Danny certainly went above and beyond in his service level as well as the quality of work. I would highly recommend Danny Rivera and the electrical division of MG Builders to any and everyone!

My wife and I selected Tolentino General Builders Inc., after interviewing 3 other companies. He came in fairly with his bid and also made a special effort to include extra details we overlooked, but needed to be addressed. His crew, especially Esther went way out of their way to do a fine job and kept us in the loop for the entire process. As a general contractor, Mr Tolentino is fast, detail oriented and completely committed to making his customer happy. Also worth mentioning, no matter when we needed to contact Mr. Tolentino, day or night, he got back to us IMMEDIATELY. We couldn't recommend he and his crew more. Complete satisfaction and wouldn't hesitate to use him for any of our contracting needs.

Recently I found myself suddenly without a reliable and capable cleaning person for our vacation rental. My first call was to Harmony of Clean as a Whistle. She responded immediately and went to the house the same day to give me an assessment. I was definitely in need of a deep cleaning which she took care of over the next few days. A visiting friend commented on how great the place loojed. She is dependable, knowledgeable and very responsive. I would recommend her without question. Thank you Thumbtack!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
