Chuck did an outstanding job on the floors in my newly purchased home. The home had all hard wood flooring covered by carpeting. All of the carpeting was taken up and removed. The floors were sanded, stained and finished with a satin topcoat. They came out beautifully! Chuck responded to my Thumbtack request immediately and professionally and was able to come for an estimate that day. He was then able to start within a couple of days and kept me informed throughout the project. He cleaned everything up and left nothing behind and it was wonderful to walk in and see the finished product! In addition, I asked him to do a couple of other small projects, which he willingly did. I have already recommended Woodchucks Flooring to a friend who is looking to install wood flooring in her home.

Prior to putting our home on the market, we needed quite a bit of fix-it work and interior painting in all 11 rooms in our 163-year-old house in Pittsfield. From the moment Jim stepped through the front door, we were impressed not only with his professionalism, but with his taking the time to explain exactly how he would go about each fix-it project. The quote came and was more than fair for the amount of work involved. Jim was thorough and meticulous in the execution of each project and was flexible and accommodating when many of the projects uncovered more work that needed to be done or when we added additional projects. He never lost his sense of humor and he never gave up on us. In one month, he totally transformed our home from tired and worn to fresh and beautiful. He did such an amazing job, that the house sold in just 18 days. Jim's work ethic is remarkable, especially for the Berkshires. We can't think of anyone else we've worked with over the years who would not have abandoned the project at some point along the way. He really pulled through for us when three days before the first open house, he uncovered a soaking wet, rotted sub-floor in one of our bathrooms. He put his head down, worked round the clock to fix it, and installed beautiful new flooring. We are so incredibly grateful to Jim (and Heather, too, who made the house sparkle -- and miraculously got rid of a stubborn bathtub rust ring that had been there for years!) We would hire Precision Home Care in a heartbeat at any time for any project and highly recommend that you do too!!

Be advised I have followed multiple jobs in my neighborhood that was performed by Mr. Jaffe. (Freehold Enterprises Inc.) I was highly impressed after viewing the completion of said jobs and receiving the great satisfactory feedback from each customer. Said jobs included full baths, full kitchen, Flooring, cement work, plumbing etc. At this point I decided to request the hiring of Mr. Jaffe for a small detailed job. After contacting Mr. Jaffe and describing the work needed, he immediately scheduled a date for an estimate. Upon arrival I questioned Mr. Jaffe of some ideas I had for some additional work around the house. After making a complete assessment. Mr. Jaffe recommended multiple options and suggestions that were beyond my imagination. We mutually agreed on his suggested options and his affordable estimate. As meticulous as I am I was surprisingly pleased with the outcome of all the major work Mr. Jaffe has done for me. He has proven to be very experienced, professional, responsible, punctual, along with a great sense of humor. In conclusion Mr Jaffe performed a very professional high quality job that resulted in a significant increase in value of my home. I highly recommend Mr. Jaffe to anyone who is searching for an experienced quality handyman/construction worker who will provide you with affordable options as if you were a member of his family. I will be definitely contacting Mr. Jaffe for my next project. PS. Believe me there is no job to big for Mr. Jaffe

Replaced ancient vent/heater/light in first floor bathroom. Dealt with ancient ductwork, replacing what was needed to make it all work. Previously used them to find and fix a waste pipe leak from the second floor and replace a water damaged section of kitchen flooring. Prices were good and work was high quality.

Michael is a true professional. He approaches every new project on an individual basis and takes on jobs both large and small. I have worked with Michael for several years and he has most recently completed the removal of treated wood from an existing deck and installed new Trex Flooring and their Railing System. If you are a craftsman you will appreciate his work. If problems come up during the project, you will be consulted and they will be resolved.

Shaun was great to work with! He started out with installing new laminate flooring and baseboard molding. He did such great work, we asked if he could do crown molding as well. He did a wonderful job with that so we keep asking him to come back and do more work. Very pleased with the quality of his work.

The company was warm and accomodating to our needs. Our floor was destroyed by a leaky radiator. Tim assessed the damages expressing the worst scenario. We were delighted to find hardwood floors under the laminate and the layer of material under the laminate. Tim has extensive hardwood restoration experience And did an incredible job in that regard. He advised us also on what material to use as replacement of the other flooring destroyed by the leak. This also turned out well. Tim and his workers repaired our roof also. We were hit hard by damages in 2015. As I said he was accomodating to our needs in both repair and financial capabilities . Thank you Ruff & Tuff!! Carolyn srygleymoore

MBS Tile is a great resource for any of your tile installation needs. Mike was quick, courteous and above all could be trusted in my home. He is a Father and Son team who installed and finished our 12 x 12 sunroom in 1 day, complete with demo, and returned for an hour the next day to grout. I might add that he does amazing work at a reasonable price. Our porcelain marble floor looks great. I don't have any more jobs right now, but would call him in a second.

I bought a 4-family home as a foreclosure and Paul remodeled the entire home from top to bottom, kitchens, bathrooms, refinished floors, vinyl tile in the kitchens and bathrooms, did a mold remediation in the basement and made a laundry room, repaired the siding and painted and lots more. The apartments are beautiful. I would recommend Paul to anyone wanting to get some work done. He takes the time to do a proper job and does not cut corners like other contractors.

Beno removed the carpet in our family room and installed new hardwood flooring. We love the results! There was also a layer of tiles underneath the carpet that we did not know about . He had to remove the tiles and did not charge more for this extra work. He also helped me save money on supplies. He was honest, fair and did great work. We love the results and plan to hire him again.

Great work. Had my bathroom re-modeled, new lighting and fans were installed. It was suggested that I use tile flooring that looked like re-claimed barn wood and it looked amazing. Really made my entire house come together. Greg and his guys were very friendly and professional. They got the entire bathroom done in a week on short notice. Have nothing but good things to say and plan to use Challacombe Construction for future projects I want completed on my home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
