I can't say enough about Greg's Plumbing, Heating & General Services. Regardless of weather and time of day or night, Greg has arrived, as promised, and repaired the problem, whether a frozen oil line, a seemingly dead furnace, a creosote-clogged wood burning stove, a fried-out electrical outlet, a plugged chimney, a broken riding mower, a dysfunctional washing machine, or leaky kitchen pipes. He even took apart my Jeep passenger door and replaced the electric window-opening equipment when it stopped working. Whether the job is big or small, this contractor does what he is going to do, when he is going to do it, and all at the right price. He has been my go-to guy for the last four years. In all seriousness, I don't know how I would survive life in my old farmhouse without him. I've worked with other professionals who may or may not show up, who charge outrageous prices, and who don't follow through with the job. Out of 5 stars, Greg's Plumbing and Heating gets 6. Highly recommended is an understatement. And he's a really nice guy, to boot.

Pete was awesome. Super friendly and very efficient. He set up my garage door opener in no time, and made sure the work was done to completion and to my liking. Any project that he can do in the future for me, I'll be contacting him again.

Jim has performed a number of jobs for me including replacing a couple doors, repairing hole in a bathroom ceiling, bush stump removal, electrical receptacle and switch replacement and has helped me trouble shoot issues with my furnace and more. He has consistently been knowledgeable, experienced, efficient and fair. Each job was performed quicker than expected and in most cases, ahead of his own projections. From removals to renovations and much, much more, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone better.

Over the years Patrick has done many projects for us. He has remodeled our bathroom, laundry area, installed a front door and stove hood in our kitchen, repaired our main staircase, replaced our garage roof and most recently designed and built a 15 x 23 deck with a stone planter and paved walkway. He also refurbished a rental home for our daughter. Patrick always does an outstanding job. He is very professional and stands by everything he does. The deck design was beautiful and the result was exactly what he promised. We could not be happier. I highly recommend Patrick for any home improvement or design and build project. I am sure we will have more projects for him in the future!

My wife and I hired Jerry to paint 3 rooms, including repairing the sheetrock in one of the rooms and adding a door and framing. We've also asked him to radon mitegation system, which will be starting in the near future. He was on time, and did a great job. He stuck to the deadline and to budget that was set.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.
