Innate intuition is what can best describe Susan Winder-Rivera.
Susan is meticulous in sensing the needs of the student and adapting her style to finding tension and refocusing it into usable energy.
I have studied with Susan on and off as time would allow me since the 1980's. One of the reasons I keep coming back to Susan is her approach to teaching voice. Susan, focuses on the specific needs and issues of each student and develops a customized approach suited to that artist vs. other teachers who simply focus on what they know and keep drilling that into the student to hope that it sticks and solves the issues.
Susan spends time getting to know the student and in the initial session(s) focuses on understanding that artist's voice and identifying the issues/areas to focus on. Susan by nature is a very outgoing and collaborative artist that works hand in hand to develop each student's talent so they can be the best artist that they can be.
A gifted musician herself, Susan not only teaches but sings and plays the piano beautifully. Her music career spanned jazz, classical and contemporary theory and instrumental. I have always thought that the teacher should excel in what she is teaching, and Susan does just that.

Susan is an awesome teacher and an amazing human being! Her knowledge and mastery of vocal pedagogy, ear training, and harmony is unsurpassed and she explains concepts clearly and effectively. Susan is positive, patient, caring and encouraging and you leave a lesson feeling like you can do things you never thought you could do and inspired to do more. I am a professional flutist, but singing and jazz harmonic ear training have always been challenging for me. Thanks to Susan, I am able to sing in tune with proper technique, transcribe solos, expand my concept of phrasing and hear harmonies on a whole new level. Anyone who studies with Susan is very lucky!
