Introduction: **Please note that all painting classes will be conducted remotely via Zoom. I received my MFA from Columbia University where I also teach Painting as an Adjunct Professor. In my classes I emphasize two things: creating a new way of seeing, and practicing accuracy in what you see. We move through exercises that develop creativity and work through the fundamental technical components of making a drawing or a painting. Each class builds upon the tools we've developed from the last so students come away with a comprehensive understanding of art making, rather than a step-by-step formula. We work together to not only increase technical proficiency and achieve specific goals, but to develop the confidence to make art anywhere the mood strikes, whether it be painting at your kitchen table or sketching in a coffee shop or a hotel balcony.

started taking lessons on a whim even though i had no experience and was a bit hesitant to start, but kelsey was encouraging and helped me gain the confidence i needed even though my first attempts were terrible!! she's kind and patient and if you care about stuff like this by far the most skilled and well credentialed artist on this platform. i can see myself working with her weekly for a very long time!

I have been taking lessons with Kelsey and it has been an amazing journey. Her class is fun but at the same time I am learning the science and technique with painting. At the same time, I am leaning how to draw as well. I am a chemist and I work in the pharmaceutical industry. With my type of work it is very structured, stressful at times and no room for mistakes. So the painting classes with Kelsey has given me the opportunity to relax, express myself and even appreciate the beauty of mistakes and not always having order. Now when I look at artwork I appreciate color, hues, and depth. Thanks Kelsey for taking me on this journey in world of art, color and expression. Attached are some of my work, note the bike painting is in progress.

I signed up with Kelsey for 10 private lessons to learn how to work with oil paints. I'm in my early 50's and this is something I had wanted to do for years. If there is a level before "Beginner" that would have been where I was starting from. We met at her loft in Greenpoint for 2 hour sessions. First, her friendly personality, patience and calm energy were the perfect foundation for a comfortable learning experience. We started with the basics and progressed at a level that was tailored for my abilities. I never felt self-conscious, judged or rushed. Very important things when you're learning the tools of creative expression. I would highly recommend Kelsey to anyone looking to explore the world of oil painting, whether they think they have any talent or not. She's the best.

I started taking lessons with Kelsey back in autumn and quickly saw a marked improvement in my work as well as my enthusiasm for the hobby. I'd wanted to focus on line work, human gesture and emotion, and within five weeks I'd gone from making two-minute sketches to working on a full-blown, shaded portrait. Throughout her lessons Kelsey has always been courteous, professional and attentive to detail. She's able to communicate complex concepts step-by-step, breaking them down into practices that beginners can understand and emulate. I'm very happy to have picked up drawing as a hobby and that's in no small part thanks to these classes!

I certainly recommend lessons with Kelsey. She easily explained each step it took to complete a representational painting, which seemed really daunting at first, and that it was a delight to be able to come and work at an artist's studio.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
In the first session I typically ask the student to describe what they're looking to get out of these lessons as well as share any previous art they've done in the past. We jump right in making a painting or a drawing, and from there I tailor a specific curriculum based on the student's needs and strengths.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Kelsey Shwetz is a Canadian born painter who currently lives and works in New York. Shwetz received her MFA from Columbia University where she currently teaches Painting as an Assistant Adjunct Professor. She is a two-time recipient of the The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, along with grants from Canada Council for the Arts and the Mayer Foundation. She was awarded fellowships by the Vermont Studio Center, The Choy Family, Ellen Gelmen, Columbia University and CanSerrat Residency in Barcelona. She has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Paris, Slovakia, Stockholm and Mexico; her most recent solo exhibition was at Half Gallery in LA.
