Introduction: The first trial lesson is free! Please find photos of our instructors and screenshots of our online lessons in the photos below. You can also find us online when you search for A4 Music Center. Greetings, My name is Jae, and I am a pianist, piano teacher (Steinway Educational Partner), resident piano tuner/technician at the Soapbox Gallery, and founder of A4 Music Center. A4 is a New York City based music center offering piano, violin, viola & guitar lessons online. Conservatory-Trained Instructors: YiQiao Li - Piano & Music Theory Keika Kori - Piano & Music Theory Pierre Mansilla - Guitar Abby Chen - Violin & Viola Music Lessons: As a piano instructor for over ten years, I have seen how my joy for teaching and systematic approach translates into consistent progress with my students. I have taken this passion for teaching to establish A4 Music Center, an online music school that brings professional classical musicians to students of all ages. Gathered from decades of experience, our students learn how to make effective use of their practice time; how to memorize music efficiently; how to use reasonable short-term goals to achieve greater long-term goals; how to use self-reflection as a source of refinement; how to problem-solve obstacles on their own; and how to translate emotion into sound. Normally, weekly lessons are held in-person, but under the current circumstances we have transitioned online. Throughout the year we also offer performance opportunities in the form of online recitals and studio classes. Many students have remarked that the performances have served as a strong motivator to set and keep goals. We work with students of all ages and ability; from those who are learning for fun, to those preparing for exams and auditions (ABRSM exams, NYSSMA exams, specialized middle school/high school auditions, competitions, and more). We welcome all, as long as you are motivated to learn, and have the dedication and patience for the process. If you are a beginner, we will help you establish a strong foundation. If you already have experience, we will help you hone your playing and expression. We also welcome those who are considering classical music as a career. Piano Tunings/Repairs: Over the years of playing the piano, I developed a desire to know how the piano worked, inside and out. I spent two years in an apprenticeship learning to tune, repair and regulate pianos. Since then I have been hired by professional pianists and beginners to service their pianos in recording studios and private homes. I am also experienced in Dampp-Chaser humidity control system installations, and have revived pianos that haven’t been played in years. To further my studies in piano technology I also work at PianoWorks, a piano rebuilding/restoration workshop in Brooklyn.

Jae is so great! I took lessons with him while on maternity leave and really enjoyed it. I learned a lot in a short amount of time, and lessons were always fun. He is thoughtful about keeping activities fresh and interesting and engaging his students. His camera set up is pretty rad too - one on him, one on his piano, and one on the music which he marks up with his ipad pencil - all very professional and helps facilitate learning virtually. I hope to get back to lessons some time in the future when life has settled a bit!

Details: 26 - 44 years old • Yes, the student can read music • 0 - 2 yrs of formal training • Classical • Yes, the student has a keyboard • 45 minutes • Remotely (phone or internet) • My home, venue, etc.

We were going to get rid of our inexpensive upright piano we’ve had in the family since the fifties. It seemed so worn out, so tinny sounding, out of tune with a sustain pedal that dangled. Luckily we found Jai who really did save the day! He came by bike, arrived on time, was so comfortable to talk to and have in our house. We let him know we didn’t want any frills- just a tuned piano, un-tinny sounding with working sustain pedal. After his thorough examination he was enthusiastic about holding the cost down by keeping the repairs simple. (That is- simple to him! :) And the results were astounding: a beautiful rich sounding piano that we’re all enjoying again! We recommend Jai as highly as we can!!

Details: Upright • Last piano tuning more than 2 years ago • Piano played a few times a year • More than 10 years old

Jae Han - A4 Music & Tuning's reply
Thank you, Jane. It was so sweet to meet you and your family. And I’m happy to know that you are enjoying the piano! Many thanks, again!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Music Lessons: Online & In-Person: $48 / 30-minute lesson $67 / 45-minute lesson $85 / 60-minute lesson • Free Trial Lesson • Discounts for 5-Lesson and 10-Lesson Packages Piano Tuning & Repairs: $160 / Tuning & Minor Repairs $230 / Pitch Adjustment + Tuning When the piano is more than 8% out of tune, a piano adjustment is necessary in addition to a tuning. • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I received a bachelor’s degree in music and philosophy from Brandeis University; a master’s degree in piano performance from Mannes College of Music; and a professional studies certificate from Manhattan School of Music. I started my piano studies at the age of four. Early on I began to perform and participated in competitions, taking top prizes at NEPTA, MMTA and was also a finalist in the 14th Chiang Wen-Yeh International Young Artist Piano Competition. During my undergraduate studies I won the school’s concerto competition, and was twice selected to perform in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, both times as a winner of the American Fine Arts Festival. I have also participated in piano festivals in New York City (The Beethoven Institute; International Keyboard Institute and Festival), Austria (Mozarteum International Summer Academy), and England (Oxford Philomusica) and have received masterclasses from Richard Goode, Frank Wibaut, Mia Chung, Marios Papadoupoulos, and Nelita True.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I have always known that I wanted to work with people directly, and to combine that with my love of music quickly led me to realize that teaching was the way for me.
