About
I've been a professional musician touring internationally, recording and releasing music for 20 years. I attended music school at New York University and have played in rock bands, soul and funk, dance bands, jazz bands and orchestras. I am on the faculty of Brooklyn Music School, and have been teaching private lessons for several years. I am currently the singer and bass player for indie dance band Poolside, and before that I was the long time bass player, singer, keyboardist and songwriter for the group The Rapture, releasing two major label albums and touring across 4 continents. I've worked closely with top producers like Timbaland, Paul Epworth, Danger Mouse and James Murphy and have a lot of musical experience to share.
I love being able to share my broad range of experience with students young and old. For me all music is really about taste and feel. The bass guitar is the soul of the band shaping the rhythmic pulse and the keyboard can define both the harmonic and emotional boundaries of the song. Communicating that to a student is more important than writing down a bunch of technical exercises (though that is important as well). What I try to teach is to listen with the ears of and feel with the heart of a musician. We work on timing and feel, reading music, writing and improvising, and use songs that the student is interested in to explore different styles and approaches to music.

Mattie takes the time to get to know his students and tailors the lesson to them. My son looks forward to his lesson every week.

Based on our early experience, Mattie is skilled at teaching both young children (6) and adults. In our first lesson was kind, patient, fun and helpful with my 6 year old who is a beginner. And he was likewise kind and patient with me. I’m excited for more lessons with Mattie

I really enjoy the lesson with Mattie, he is very patient and the way he teaches feels very natural and inspiring. I like that his lessons have an interesting balance between theory and practice.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My rates are $110 for a one hour lesson, $85 for a 45 minute lesson, and $60 for a 30 minute lesson. There is a small travel surcharge if I we are doing lessons in your home, but no charge if you travel to my studio.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Begin with an assessment of where they are as a player. Find out what their goals are and what they hope to accomplish as a musician. Depending on their skills and goals I devise an individual plan for each student and we take it from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Studied privately with respected jazz bass players Pepe Gonzalez and Mike Richmond. Studied piano with various private instructors since age 11. Studied at NYU and Berklee. I am currently on the faculty of Brooklyn Music School in Fort Greene.
