Introduction: I emphasize the understanding of theoretical concepts through simple formulas that eliminate the need for tedious memorization- I've seen lots of students either quit the piano or skip learning theory because they got frustrated. The real reason is that the methods being used to teach them were not effective. I also encourage you to find your own distinctive musical style when you compose and improvise- which I believe is the biggest edge for a musician today. I remember learning my favorite classical piece, a Beethoven when I was much younger and seeing my fingers dance on the piano on auto-pilot. When I see my students succeed, I know they feel the same joy and that brings me a lot of satisfaction.
