Introduction: I am a professional musician and music educator with training at Harvard (B.A.), the New England Conservatory (M.M.) and the Dave Brubeck Institute. I have taught at Harvard University, where I received a Certificate of Distinction in Teaching, and maintain an active private studio, teaching trumpet, brass, piano, voice, guitar, jazz, songwriting, and drums to students ages 9 and up. In addition to playing on several award-winning jazz recordings including NPR's #1 jazz debut of 2016, I've toured the United States and collaborated with many forward-thinking artists. In addition to jazz and classical music, I have experience in rock, pop, soul, afro-beat, and other styles, and am also an experienced composer, singer, and songwriter. I love to teach with an open mind and tailor my lessons to the interests and strengths of my students. Music should be enjoyable for anyone and it's my pleasure to help spread this joy. In addition to covering all the technical and theoretical basics, my lessons feature individualized repertoire and a great deal of listening.

Tree is wonderfully patient and affirming in his teaching. He is an expert but never a show off and always mentions the progress I am making while continuing to push me towards new skills. He is also remarkably versatile — I can recommend him as a teacher and player of trumpet, drums, French horn, ukelele, piano, and bass.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I generally offer both 1-hour lessons and 30-minute lessons. Standard rate is $50/hr, $35/half-hr, but I recognize that lessons can be a luxury and am open to discussion of rates.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The first lesson always consists of a conversation in which we talk about the student's history with music, both as a performer and a listener. We then talk through any concrete goals the student may have for the lessons and usually play either a piece or conduct an improv activity. As I get to know a student better, I custom build them a practice routine that plays to their interests as well as their potential.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied music at Harvard University with Vijay Iyer and Yosvany Terry, and I also attended the New England Conservatory, where I studied trumpet with Steve Emery (formerly of the Boston Symphony), the great Laurie Frink, and legendary jazz trumpeter John McNeil. I also worked with Jason Moran, Dominique Eade, and Jerry Bergonzi. My teaching training has included working with the Harvard University Music Department and the Portland Youth Philharmonic's Mentor Program in Portland, Oregon.
