Introduction: Marisa Schwartz is an Ivy League educated, certified teacher with 20 years of experience as a writing specialist/English teacher in grades 4 to 12 and college. I have designed and delivered courses in basic skills, advanced topics, college application essays, test taking strategies, creative writing, research and science writing. I also work with adults, from teachers seeking certification to grad students who need dissertation support. As a creative writing teacher, I can offer thoughtful constructive criticism for fiction or essay writers at any skill level. I am confident I can devise a plan to address your needs, whether you are prepping for an exam, applying to colleges, or writing a paper in any discipline. I've been called a patient guide through the writing process and an unashamed grammar geek, so if you think you'd like punctuation jokes and someone who will calmly help you organize a 25 page term paper on obscure diseases, I'm your girl.

At the turn of the millennium, I was a junior at Murrow h.s. attempting to pull an Intel Science Talent Search paper together along with about 20 other ambitious 17-year olds. The Intel kids had two terrific mentors - one more focused on guiding us through the absurdly complex development and submission process, the other a terrific writing coach helping to ensure that our work was as crisp, concise and articulate as possible to the judges - one Marisa Schwartz. Like many of the other kids, I formed a strong bond with both teachers, and when it came time to write my college entrance essay for the Ivy League to which I'd decided to apply early, I turned to Marisa. It was difficult, because my essay was about the emotional turmoil of having come out a month or so earlier for the first time, to my 16-year old girlfriend, and Marisa was the first adult with whom I'd shared my secret. When I got my essay back, it was riddled with red ink and, after the general comments, a postscript that read, "Thank you for sharing this with me." I think Marisa helped me edit and revise that essay about 5 times, and by the end it was truly a great piece of writing. As for the school - I got in!

Marisa was an integral part of helping me learn how to write more clearly. I had been out of school for ten years and didn't have a lot of confidence in my skills as a writer. I knew that I would need to be able to write at a graduate level and she prepared me very well for my graduate program in library science. I did very well in school and credit Marisa for her patience and teaching style. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking to learn how to write in an academic setting.

Marisa is great. She’s tutoring our 11 year-old son with test prep for Hunter College HS, working on the ELA and essay portion of the test. She is thorough and organized, and is truly making him feel like she’s in his camp, supporting his ideas and helping him to expand and explore his thoughts on paper. When I asked him how his session went, he said “Awesome!” and sat down to continue what they had been working on.
