Mark W. says, "When it comes to interior design, I am at a loss. My eye for color, texture, depth, and statement is extremely lacking. I sought out an interior decorator because I had moved into a house with some great hosting space. How ever would I have been able to make it cozy and welcoming on my own? In looking for interior decorators I had a few rules. My current furniture that was already there are not to be moved so decorating has to work around it. I wanted something simple and practical. I hate clutter and while I appreciate and want texture in my room design, it has to have a subtle feel to it and not 'in your face'. I also wanted to make sure that any furniture I get also holds practicality and would be easy to maintain and clean. Here is where Zoha comes to the rescue. Of the many decorators I spoke with, Zoha was the most open and flexible with my needs. She worked with me to create a vision that I would be happy with. There was no issue with my existing furniture and the ones that she got to fill in the negative space complimented each other well. She came to scope out the area, take measurements and then followed up with virtual renderings to help guide the vision. She has relationships with some of my favorite furniture stores to peruse (west elm, crate and barrel, pottery barn) and some art retailers as well. She was able to get me amazing discounts on her finds too! What resulted was a carefully curated and fully collaborative effort from both sides, though I heavily relied on her for the details. On the rare occasion that I did not feel like one of the pieces suited me, she was extremely flexible with accommodating my needs. For example, she found me some gorgeous rugs but I was just unwilling to pay for what I consider 'throw away' furniture. Rugs are for stepping on and I am not a believer of passing them down (gross!). So I we looked for some more cost effective ones and she helped me choose out the best fit for color and pattern. Her ability to develop a vision but remain adaptive to desired changes was so key to the working relationship. I will say, though, ultimately, I was immensely both impressed and delighted with her choices. In the end, all of it fit my needs and standards and I can now enjoy a fully furnished and decorated space that has been curated to my comfort and taste. Her fee was more than fair. I never would have been able to select the options that she chose. The discounts she got us basically helped fund that fee as well. She communicated well throughout the entire process and was willing to go the extra steps to help resolve issues when it came to manufacturer errors (e.g. a few of the pieces came damaged, not at all anyone's fault, but she made sure I got a refund and was satisfied with the resolution). I highly recommend Zoha for your interior design needs. She transformed my space and I'm sure she'll do the same for you."See more

Jonah R. says, "Angela was an absolute pleasure to work with and transformed our space well beyond our expectations!! We live in a NYC 2 bedroom apartment and engaged Angela to help us transform our second bedroom into a nursery, with the added challenge of separating the space to leave room for a desk and exercise equipment. Angela did a great job with very tasteful designs, and helped us every step of the way to make sure the space was exactly as we wanted, being flexible for our changing preferences and budget. She was clearly very organized starting from the first conversation, with a very thoughtful approach on how to get feedback from us to ‘bring the space alive’. I really appreciated the constant feedback cycles to tweak the vision and present many options until we got it ‘just right’. I couldn’t recommend Angela enough, provides an A+ service!!"See more

Phyllis G. says, "I recently worked with Wiskup Architecture, and I was incredibly impressed with the experience from start to finish. Evan took the time to truly understand the scope of the project and provided creative, practical solutions that made a big difference in the outcome. His attention to detail and clear communication helped everything move smoothly and on schedule, which I really appreciated. What stood out most was how invested Evan was in making sure the final result met—and even exceeded—expectations. His expertise and passion for great design were evident in every step of the process. I’d highly recommend him and his firm to anyone looking for an architect and team who are reliable, thoughtful, and easy to work with."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
