Carol is such a great dog trainer! She was wonderful with our previous dog, so when we got a new dog we sought her out for training again. She has so much experience and really knows dogs, especially breed-specific tendencies. She takes charge and doesn't let the dog act out. She's the best trainer in the Albany area.

I can't say enough positive things about Sarah Todd and the help she provided in the area of dog training for our problem. She came to our house and met our dogs and instructed us in a variety of ways about how to deal with the difficulties we were having with one of our dogs with regard to her (the dog) reactions to other dogs and certain other triggers that caused her to show aggression. Sarah was very patient and understanding providing insight into the reasons for our problem. In a very short time we have noticed a great deal of improvement in our dog. We would highly recommend Sarah as a dog trainer and behaviorist to anyone who needs these kind of services.

Lynnae is amazing!! She is patient, positive and really helped me understand how to work with my dog. My dog was super excited every time he saw Lynnae. He loved "practicing" with her! I would highly recommend Lynnae to anyone who is interested in not only training their dog but understanding them too!

Tek was awesome guy. He send me pics every day of my dog. He was informing about everything what was going on. He figured what she likes and he was making her happy girl. They are very awesome with scheduling. I found them on the web in the last min and they understood my urgency. Will def keep them in mind and suggest them to my friends.

Great Trainers that are always willing to help. My dog is a different dog after attending classes at the APF. She is much more obedient and manageable. The bond I have with my dog is now stronger then ever and a large part of that is because of the APF Classes

    About

I am originally from Rochester, New York. I've been training dogs for over five years. The main thing that I have learned in doing this is to be patient. Some dogs can be trained faster than others. It really depends on the breed, but all dogs are trainable. You just have to know and use their own instincts that they are born with. I train dogs that are not housebroken, jumping on people, biting, barking, and pulling when you walk them. I can also teach commands depending what your needs are and what you want from your pet. I can come to you or you to me, whichever makes you comfortable. I am looking forward for all of you dog lovers out there to contact me, so you can have control for your family member and not have family, friends or guests be afraid to enter your home or even to lock your family member away when you do have visitors.

    About

I do positive dog training, and I am certified with ABC dog trainers. I have owned many types of dogs and worked with them also.

    About

Many people train their pets, or at least attempt to. But I go beyond that. I love dogs and want to do what I can to make living with them as easy as I can. A lot of people get frustrated because their dog pulls to much when they walk them, or because it won't learn to sit or lay down. I want to alieviate that frustration. I have trained many dogs, both my own and friends and they are amazed. When new people come over and see how many tricks/commands my dogs know and how well behaved they are they say how shocked they are. I own large dogs and I always get people that are scared because of their size. I promise them that they will do nothing other than sniff you, lick you, and wait for you to pet them. By the end of the evening, most want to take them home. I enjoy working with dogs, so I don't see it as a job that needs to be done, but a job that yes, needs to be done, but that I love every minute doing.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
