Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Despite my efforts to pre-pack (except kitchen that was a 6 x 8 foot area), send pictures of each room, and send a full list of the large items well before the move, a truck was sent that was too small, and only 2 movers showed-no packers. Garrett was very quick to respond however and another truck was sent with one other mover. Movers were very courteous.

Swift Movers were not only professional, providing an itemized breakdown of the estimate for the move, their work and work ethic was top notch! They were friendly, considerate, and didn't mind one bit that they had an audience of our children watching them move our furniture. Look no further, hesitate no longer, feel confident in the service you will receive from this company! We are so glad we hired them and hands down would do it again!

Ron had a crew of hard working, patient men. My only regret was not being more prepared. They were awesome and very affordable. Ron treats the move like it was his own family!

Ryan and Terrell showed up early, as they were eager to get the job started. Within 20 minutes, they had everything loaded, which was great. When they arrived at my new home, they got to work right away and it was incredible watching Terrell carry things up to the top floor of our apartment building - all while carrying on a pleasant conversation with us! From the time they arrived at the pickup to the time they finished, it only took them about 2.25 hours to complete the job, and the final cost was super reasonable. I would absolutely hire them again if I needed to move - they both made this move a breeze! Thank you, Betts Brothers!

I found it very difficult to write this review because the gentleman owner Garrett Wagner is very pleasant and I do believe he has all good intentions. I wish him well but I cannot offer a good review based solely on my experience. The problem is he is not a professional mover, and his lack of experience and expertise evident. Hired to bring 2 professional packers to pack & load a 2BD house then deliver and unload. First day was to pack and load, next day delivery & unload. They were directed at time of hire & quote that specific items needed to make this "first" truck (fully aware that storage items would not be included & another truck would be hired for these items at a later date) - specific items of furniture, books, clothes and appliances were to be on this truck . Several phone calls reiterated these four categories were definite to be moved. Garret arrived with a rented U-Haul, a helper hired to load and his girlfriend (a housecleaner) as packer. They arrived approx. 10:15am announcing they wanted to be on the road by 1:30pm (same day!) They unrealistically decided they could pack a house, load, deliver 166 miles away, unload and return rented truck before truck drop off hours - same day! Obviously the circus act that ensued was of nightmarish proportions! And that was not the expectation or agreement made at hire!! They literally threw what they could in boxes, loaded what they could fit in the too-small-for-the-job-truck. Leaving behind a trail of chaos...And more importantly Also leaving behind books, furniture and appliances - items specifically stated and agreed upon at time of hire. At same day unload it was discovered that every wooden surface on furniture and legs of (on every piece!) of furniture were nicked &/or scratched, the leg for bed missing, remote control missing, fragile boxes were stacked under heavy boxes breaking several glass items - and the list goes on. In this case it is truly stated "haste makes waste"! I'm sorry to say I cannot give this company a good rating at this time. I did not and of course would not have hired them for second truck. And, at this time, I cannot not refer them to family or friends (at least not any of those I like!)
