Marty Klein installed crown moldings in our home's bedrooms and baths; the work came out the way one would expect a professional carpenter's work to come out--exceptionally nice. If you need a pro carpenter Marty Klein has very fair prices and very fine work--recommended!

I recently had a tree come down in my yard. I called Dave and he made himself available to remove the tree as quickly and efficiently as possible. He is professional and talented. He was able to dice the tree, the branches, and brush and remove it off my yard with ease. It would have taken me a week to do what he did in a day and a half, and that's saying alot because I'm a builder and carpenter . I work around people like Dave everyday and he is without a doubt a top notch worker but even more important a top notch guy.

Thiago from Alpha Pro Painting came and gave us a fair estimate to repaint our home exterior. He was extremely professional, communicated well as to when he would arrive, answered all our questions, was very polite, and did a fantastic job to our complete satisfaction above and beyond expectation. I would him hire again and am recommending him to our friends and relatives. Using a service like Thumbtack may seem intimidating, but once you meet Thiago and look at the many other glowing reviews of his work you can rest easy that he will perform to your satisfaction. This is a company that takes pride in it's work and has experienced craftsmen.

Teddy did a fantastic job dealing with a plumbing situation that was far worse than I initially thought. He quickly identified the problem and knew exactly how to tackle it. His rate is very reasonable compared to many others and he was also fair. When he had to go out for supplies, he did not charge me for drive time. During my time with him, I learned that, in addition to being a nice person, he’s really a Jack of All Trades. Not only is he a highly-skilled plumber, he’s also an electrician and carpenter. In fact, I’m hiring him to do some electrical work soon. I highly recommend Teddy Cook.

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

Joe's articulate, specialty, creative craftsmanship has made my house a home. With all of my intracasies, attention to detail and extensive out-of-the-box projects, Joe has always been patient and fun to work with. He takes the time to look at every angle & corner and provide guidance & advice in areas I never even thought to look. His meticulous nature and well thought-out mindset is why I would never trust another carpenter to touch my home. I've been partnering with Joe for 4 years now and have made numerous recommendations for him, and half my block has used his services to unbelievable satisfaction. I highly recommend Joe to anyone, and still have a laundry list of projects for him to complete!

Sonna was professional, punctual, precise and thorough and I highly recommend working with him! He replaced all of our interior hallway, bathroom and closet doors, managing the purchase of all hardware, doors and casing. He had not only the best estimate in terms of dollar amount but also on speed of getting the job done. The turnaround was super fast on getting the materials purchased and the job started and he finished one day late (our building has really restrictive hours that he didn't know about beforehand). At the end, when one of the magnetic door holders was broken, he even went out, bought a new one, and came back to fix it on another day. If we ever do any more work, we'd love to work with Sonna again!

He suggested different ideas for the room, and CONSULTED with me before doing it(I've had problems with other carpenter just taking upon themselves to do things that u did not authorize and got charged for it) YOU WILL NOT have that problem with Dave he is an honest and hardworking guy! The floor, paint, and materil i purchasd was very expensive & I was concerned about it not coming out perfect. However, he came to my home did an excellent job. He was extremely neat & the room came out absolutely perfect.

I highly recommend Vivax for any home remodel or work project. Vitaliy has gone above and beyond on a recent home project which included total gut renovations of 2 bathrooms, rebuilding an enclosed screened in porch, painting and drainage/foundation remediation. His workers did a meticulous and great job by paying close attention to the details. His carpenters did a fantastic job rebuilding cabinetry and showed many years of experience and excellent craftsmanship. They were also very professional and reliable. My family and I are very pleased with their work product and are enjoying our 'new' bathrooms and porch. Jamal Davis

Luis Rolon refinished our basement. We added a full bath, a bedroom and play area. He did the framing and drywall and painting as well as other carpenter work, and the basement looks beautiful. He also made a window seat for us upstairs and it looks like it fits in perfectly.

I am a interior designer in New York. I hired Innovators to renovate a one bedroom for a client in a top co-op building in NYC. The building had strict guidelines for any alterations. Edward and his crew were very careful to follow the building regulations and rules which is very important when working on many of the buildings in NY. Innovators has a great pull of skilled workmen and sub contractors. Many of his workers are multi-skilled and professional. We are at the end of the renovations and are please with the outcome. We will use Innovators again in future projects. Giselle Ulmo Giselle Ulmo Design

With a recent move, I needed a lot of help with my townhouse including carpentry, plumbing, light electric, landscaping, installation of large TV and appliances, design and build of a garage gym. Deuel went above and beyond and brought to my attention potential enhancements/improvements I didn’t think of. He took care of all of it and did a great job! I highly recommend him!

Saulo General Carpenter

Saulo was recommended to me for repair jobs. He and a co-worker framed, erected wall board, added trim and painted to box in and cover up recently installed a/c ducts in a 1927 house (framing of the ducts pictured). The final product looks great and completely blends into the room. They also repaired a minor wall damage and painted a office space. Saulo also replaced a rotting front door saddle. They did an excellent job and kept the work space clean. Saulo was professional, on time, prompt in getting back to us and fairly priced. Quality work is hard to find. I would hire him again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

    How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
