We used Seka Moving for a full day move. Sasha and Azamat arrived early and moved our furniture to storage and then again moved another set of furniture back to our house. Good experience, they were polite and courteous. Would consider them again.

I couldnt have asked for a better service. I booked my move pretty much last minute, we moved in to storage with Kobe and his crew. I found out about Great Movers through thumbtack and I thought this is just hoax. Movers NYC were so expensive but this company turned out the most affordable and clear in prices. My movers bailed out on me because of some unbelievable reason. We scheduled the move with a very small and easy to book process. My move was seamless. I was not prepared at all. Movers packed my belongings into boxes and were kind enough to help me take down ac and TV. but a note: they will not install the tv and AC after the move in to a new move because of safety reasons, which totally makes sense. We were packed up in no time. I moved from a studio to a studio so it was a fairly quick move. throughout the move, the crew kept asking me about which items to be moved and which were to be taken to storage. My move was divided into 2 parts. I moved from Bushwick to Parkslope and then some of my stuff went to storage at Varick Street.

The owner of Fair Price Movers, David, contacted me right away after my post about help with moving from my storage unit to my new apartment. David is very professional, reliable, and trustworthy business owner. I have experienced not the best service from a previous company I hired and now that I found Fair Price Movers I will recommend them to all my family and friends. On the day of the move; Aaron, Jose, and Luis came to our rescue for a fast and efficent move. All 3 are very hard working men, I'm sure Mr. David Wright is very happy to know how professional his crew is. Thank you so much guys!!

I appreciate their fees were upfront, no surprises (like other movers). They had several people on their team, so the furniture was moved very quickly from Hoboken to storage units.

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

Great to work with. They did a great job packing the truck. They estimated one load and that is what it was. If they had not packed the truck so well, i would have had to pay for a second load. Price was good and the owner is very responsive. A 10 x 15 storage unit took them two hours.

3 Brothers were the most responsive of all the companies I contacted. Moving is stressful enough & they made it so easy to get through. I had to move in to storage for awhile and they were so helpful in planning & making suggestions for things I had not thought about. When my apartment is ready 3 Brothers will be my first call to move me in to my home!! Professional & just the nicest guys!

After a week long of trying to move this piece myself, failures trying to find an affordable moving company for ONE piece , being scammed, Mack came to the rescue the day before!!!! He came highly recommended from a friend who recently used his services. We just finished the job and I couldn’t be more pleased. I had one beautiful piece from Anthropologie that could not be taken apart so it needed special care and manuvering to move. Mack arrived at the pick up home earlier than scheduled and ready to work! He had a 16ft truck with a lift gate which made this even better. Him and his partner carefullymoved the extremely heavy piece to my mothers home on Long Island from westchester. I would highly recommend Mack and his team and I look forward to using them again!! Thank you guys!!!

I hit the jackpot when I hired Daniel Evans. He was truly the answer to a prayer regarding a furniture moving nightmare. I needed to move a large chifforobe to an upstairs bedroom and it seemed like it was impossible due to the configuration of the staircase. Several previous attempts were unsuccessful. It was suggested to have the piece dismantled and reassembled in the bedroom. I discovered Daniel through thumbtack.com and it was the best experience. PROFESSIONAL, PUNCTUAL, COURTESY, WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND, KNOWLEDGEABLE- cannot say enough great things. Daniel came out, accessed the furniture and moving space, suggested a possible solution, scheduled a day to return and got the piece upstairs and into the bedroom. This was all done within 3 days! The quality and amount of work that he put into this job far exceeded what he charged. Hands down Daniel it the best at what he does and I will not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

Darryl and his crew were absolutely incredible. They weren't just the best movers I've ever had, the whole move was some of the best customer service I've ever had. I had a bit of an odd move - we had to first move out of a 1 story walk-up in the East Village, then out of a storage unit about 15 blocks away, then all the way to the Upper West Side. But they were absolute pros. They showed up 15 mins early, which in NYC is crucial, because you never know what can go wrong on the day of your move. They were extremely polite and courteous as they assessed the amount, then went to work. They were extremely careful with everything, and even helped me take the AC out of the window, AND made sure to drain it of excess water before putting it on the truck. They did all the little and thoughtful touches perfectly. At the storage unit, they were able to make a tight fit to park it in the loading bay - we're talking by an inch or two, yet they pulled it off in one try. When they delivered everything to the new place, they were just as careful, and placed everything in a way so that we could easily access key areas and unpack in a more efficient way. And above all, they were all extremely nice, polite, courteous, and great to chat with, as well as a great value. I was being quoted higher prices for a truck and 3 movers, and even a truck and 2 movers. You absolutely will not go wrong picking this company. Thanks again to Darryl and the guys!

I have moved 2 times in the past 3 years, and for each of these moves my choice of company was redhat moving. Sergiu, Ivan, and Sasha are all absolute professionals. Sergiu called and explained each step of the way so I would know how things were going. They are all personable and careful and inspire absolute trust. I cannot thank them enough for making moving day so easy for me. If you are moving, these are the only people to call.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
