I met Michael years ago. He has transformed my life. Between his sessions (not a lot of them) with me and him recommending I read the Power Of Now. I see life totally differently and I don't get upset at anything. Maybe once a year I go in for a tune-up session. I recommend him whenever I can. He is what "I" call a holistic psychologist that I don't have to go to for 3-6 months at a time and he does get RESULTS.

About 18 months ago I hit that place that I needed to get my eating under control or buy bigger clothes. About the same time, I received an e-mail from Renee Simon offering a weight loss class. I have known Renee for about 20 years, and watched her holistic approach to health and wellness grow and deepen, and have called upon her expertise in a variety of ways. I decided to take advantage of the serendipitous offering and joined her group. One of the things I have always valued in working with Renee is how she approaches each client, each situation, individually and from the heart; while she may have an outline, she tailors things to best work with each person. In this group, she provided food samplings, recipes and phone calls of support. I did not find it difficult to follow her program, which included increasing activity, and in fact was quite pleased that by eating consciously during a particularly social month, which included a glass of wine with meals out, I was still able to lose about eight pounds of the total of 12 I lost. Not only did my clothes fit better, some even became loose. On a subsequent visit with my doctor, he commended me on my weight loss, asked what I had done and told me to keep doing it. On the couple of occasions when a couple of pounds crept back on, I recalled Renee’s tutelage, ate more consciously again, I have been able to maintain the weight loss. Janis Danbury CT

After suffering too long with pain, headaches and sleep deprivation, I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The chiropractor I was seeing at the time suggested I see an acupuncturist and introduced me to Andrea Henkels. I was hesitant, but desperate for relieve. Andrea immediately won my confidence with her caring and professional manner. Andrea is knowledgeable in all areas of healing including acupuncture, herbal supplements and massage. She is a kind, gentle, caring spirit. I left my first appointment feeling relaxed, peaceful and centered. I have continued to see Andrea to help me deal with my fibromyalgia and would highly recommend her services to anyone looking for an alternative to Western medicine.

I was stressed from multiple caregiving responsibilities when I went for a coaching and Reiki session with Joan. Her background and skills make her a "smart listener," with a genuine desire to help each individual find practices that fit their lives and needs. I felt very supported by Joan's suggestions (and she gave me some great recipes!), and rejuvenated by the Reiki. If you are looking for someone with a gentle, holistic approach, Joan is the real thing!

I went for one ear acupuncture treatment to try and help with painful and heavy periods. The three months following my treatment were the lightest and easiest I had in the three years prior! I plan on going back for another treatment. I was a little embarrassed to discuss this issue with Dr. Resnick, but he was very compassionate and understanding.

I originally tried accupuncture for my lower back pain, but quickly learned everything improved! Unlike western medicine where treatment may wait for test results and/or require powerful (and dangerous) prescriptions, accupuncture gives immediate results. Becky is a caring and experienced practitioner who will listen to your concerns and symptoms and treat them right away...I felt greatly improved after only one visit! It's the best I've felt in years!

Amber is a natural healer and care taker. She has always had strong intuition in regard to the people around her, and has now complimented that with powerful Reiki training. Her approach is equal parts academic and spiritual. Prior to my first treatment she made sure I understood what we were about to do, and why. She explained the seven chakras of the body, and how each related to my day-to-day existence. The more informed I became, the more clear it was that Reiki -- which literally means “God’s Wisdom” or “Higher Power” meeting “Life Force Energy”-- is not an obscure, new-age concept, but a proven alternative medicine we should all practice. Developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Reiki aims to heal by establishing balance. We are the sum of our parts, if we do not deal with the negative emotions and situations we encounter then they fester within us, creating emotional and physical distress. By seeking the help of trained Reiki specialist, and practicing meditation and affirmative thinking, patients can identify and release those destructive forces. I have seen and felt significant changes in my body and state of mind since I began seeking Amber’s help. I have lost weight, my insomnia has weakened, my surgically-repaired knee is recovering much more quickly, and I feel more confident, happy and secure in my life in general. Furthermore, the holistic approach of Reiki has felt like a natural evolution of my strong catholic faith, rather than a contrast to it. I would recommend it, and Amber, to anyone seeking an elevated life experience.

I've been seeing Carrie Andress for acupuncture for almost a year, and it has become an important and effective part of my self-care regimen. When I first started seeing Carrie, my main concern was my digestion. After a few sessions, Carrie uncovered several other issues that surfaced as we talked more about my past health concerns. Quite quickly, I experienced results. My digestion has improved dramatically and gall stone issues have subsided greatly. Carrie keeps up with the latest developments and approaches to acupuncture. Her knowledge of Chinese medicine and nutrition makes her treatments comprehensive and have secured very positive results for me. Her needling technique is amazing, and I love the fact that she incorporates other modalities into her treatments. Barbara Lane

I incorporate reflexology, shiatsu pressure points and energy work to customize each session.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

    • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
    • Nutritional medicine
    • Botanical medicine
    • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
    • Hygiene
    • Counseling
    • Minor surgery
    • Homeopathy
    • Acupuncture
    • Intravenous and injection therapy
    • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

    Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

    • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
      • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
    • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
      • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
      • Do I need a referral?
      • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
      • What will the co-pay be?
      • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
    • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

    Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
