God send and then some !! This is by far the most deserved review I've left for someone in a while! My wife and O discovered what we believed to be Bed Bugs in our daughters bed after she ran into our bedroom at 3:00am declaring she has chicken pox and needs a "dakwart to operate on her" yes she is still in that cute age where she un intentionally misprounounces some words and utters the most random phrases.. Needless to say we saw the princess wasn't kidding she had red welts all over her back.. After checking her for fever and going through the chickenpoxs 101 list my wife and I decided to play it safe and see the doctor in the morning. While putting her back to bed I realized to check her sheets over thinking that maybe a spider or mosquito or any bug could have done that. I was stunned to see what I saw and without drawing a panic told the little munchkin if she wanted to sleep with mommy and dad it's cool (she was in our bed before I finished the sentence). I explained to worry that there was about a dozen Bed Bugs in her bed (I never saw them but they certainly it weren't spiders or ants) and that most likely this is what caused the alarm. The Bed Bugs were hiding in the folds of my baby girls mattress. We searched out for a bed bug exterminator and in speaking with a few companies found LockhartRoyce to be caring, understanding, and genuinely into the work they were to perform. The treatment itself was a sight to see - with the state toon to detail, the respect for our home, neatness, overall knowledge of the owner (Steven), all the way through when he insisted on mopping up after himself. The communication after the visit was just as open as before, and we received the follow up visit as promised. These guys are that rare breed of service pro who genuinely just loves what he does and feels same way about his clients. Ps - we have 2 cats both of whom stayed in the bathroom during the visit. 8 months and no more Bed Bugs. Thank you gentlemen we are genuinely happy to write this for you! Sam, Kelly & Lisa NYC

I contacted Bugged Out Pest Managed for a bed bug issue. John's response was immediate, professional, and the quote was very fair. We set up an appointment, which was very accommodating. Well,John just left our house. Considering the reason he was here, I had a very pleasant experience! He calmed my anxiety. He was prompt, courteous, careful, neat, friendly, efficient and professional. Above all, he was very patient with me and my many concerns ( I have asthma, animals) relative to the products he was using. Not a little bugger to be found anywhere! I would highly recommend Bug Out Pest Management to anyone whoneeds this kind of service. On a scale of 1 to 10, John is a 12! I will definitely be using John again as needed.

Terminators pest management rescued me from bedbugs. At first I hired Orkin Pest Control wish turned out to be a major disaster. Everything that Orkin said they DID NOT fulfill. I got more bite than I originally had. After calling 8 times to get another technician to come out to retreat they said we cannot apply any more products in my home. They charged me $3800.00 to treat my home and I still have the bedbugs. At my job I saw two exterminators speaking to someone about how to prevent bedbugs so I asked for an excuse and related my situation and the lady (yes a lady exterminator) Lisa took the time to explain how the bugs can travel through the walls and will use Johnnie my 180lbs Pitbull as transportation to travel throughout the house. Jerry the service manager came to my house and gave me an evaluation on the situation. He gave me tips on how to help eliminating these nasty bloodsuckers. I immediately hired Terminators. Everything that Jerry and Lisa said would happen did happen. In less than a week I haven’t gotten any more bites. They were schedule to come out in two weeks to do a follow up service but I fell sick and the office personnel Shirley reschedule the appointment and called me twice a week to check up on me and my bedbug situation. I will recommend and use terminators pest management in the future.

Tom was great and very thorough. I have a one bedroom apartment and he was there for 2 1/2 hours. He's going to call in a week to make sure the pest problem is under control and, if not, will come back at no charge and take care of the situation. I would recommend him without any reservations.

We found termites in our basement late last spring and after getting quotes from a couple of exterminators, we chose to go with Gus. Gus is passionate about pest control and termites in particular. He protected the perimeter of our house with termite treatment and also put foam and bait stations as necessary at the source of the infestation, which in our case was at the base of the basement stairs. Even months after getting our house treated, Gus would always answer my questions over the phone or via text and even stopped by one time to address one of my concerns. You can't go wrong with Gus and I recommend him highly.

I needed to deal with an infestation if bed bugs. Michael was very good at explaining what needed to be done. On both days of treatment, he was early, efficient and always explained what he was doing. As I had the second treatment only yesterday, it is too early to tell if I wi need more. However, I already can see and feel a vast difference.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

What do pest control companies do?

Pest control companies handle all aspects of bug, rodent and animal extermination or removal. Pest control professionals visit your home or office to identify the type of pest that is troubling you and offer various treatment plans — complete with clearly outlined costs. Once you and the pest control company have a signed agreement, the pro will begin treatment. Pest treatment can range from the use of spray pesticides and gel bait to live and/or kill traps. There are a wide range of types of pesticides, many of them nontoxic for humans and other small animals. This means you may be able to have your home treated for pests without harming nearby wildlife or your dog and cat. The pest control pro will carry out the treatment plan and, depending on the service agreement, provide follow-up such as emptying traps, inspecting access points, or reapplying pesticide spray if the pests return. Costs will vary based on the type of pest you are having removed and the extent of the infestation. The average national pest control price range is $80-$130. From a minor bedbug event to an entire home termite infestation, pest control companies have got you covered.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

How much does it cost to remove a mouse?

If you have a mouse in your house you’re probably quickly researching pest control costs. Mice, although tiny, can transmit diseases and also get into your food and leave unsanitary droppings around your home. If you have seen one mouse in your house, it’s likely that more have taken up residence in your crawl space, attic or basement. The national average pest control cost is $150-$200. Costs can vary depending on whether you need to get rid of a population of living mice or just dispose of a dead mouse (or full traps), how extensive the mouse population is, and where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pest control cost for removing a mouse:

  • $150 for initial trap setup and inspection (and sealing of entry holes).
    • $50 for rodent removal service calls and emptying of traps. This visit can also include identifying and sealing entry points that were not sealed on the first visit.
  • Rodent extermination: $110-$350, depending on how heavy the rodent population is, whether the mouse infestation poses health risks, how many entrances exist and how many rodent bait stations are needed.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.
