I didn't have an opportunity to use Jason's services, as the situation was resolved. However, we communicated on several occasions. He was attentive, responsive and more than fair with his pricing. I have included him in my arsenal of contractors and whenever the need arises, I plan to call Berry's Home Improvement.

Walter came in as a last minute save the day contractor. He is a general contractor licensed and insured and came to fix mistakes of another contractor and fix my faucets install. He ended up doing an amazing job and added a sealer to my carrera marble vanity. I am using him again for my next project. He does what he says he will, sticks to price and exceeds expectations. NICE GUY overall. Don't look further!

Greivin is a very reliable, honest and responsive contractor who did a great job at repainting our house. I offered him the job after he submitted the best bid among 4 contractors to paint my 1340 sq feet house in Hoboken. My walls were painted in dark colors with different rooms having different colors and we were shifting to all white - he did a great job that needed four coats and also agreed to repair our wooden floor in a small corner for no extra cost. He has done a great and timely job - in a condo building, he did the job with no disturbance to neighbors. Highly recommended.

Multiple electrical jobs completed both indoor and outdoor for old and new construction for both my moms residence and mine. Response time was same day and appointments were fulfilled in less than a week. All jobs were successfully completed and there was never a need to return to fix any jobs we paid for. Also, when new electrical issues arose I was able to reach out for advisement. Prices were fair and competitive and service was high quality. All repairs were explained in lamens terms for easy understanding of problems and remedies. I have high standards with who I hire because there are a lot of scammers and low quality electricians and I don't like to pay twice. I would recommend this electrician to anyone and trust his work and feel safe having him handle all the electrical work for my home and my families homes. Cheaping out on electrical work means you pay later ....

Jaimie was excellent!!! He responded to all of my concerns within 30-45 mins by email and was the only contractor who gave me an estimate that was within my budget. He came on the date and time specified and was courteous and thorough. I have already scheduled another appointment w him to help me tackle some of the other projects I've been trying to get done around here. Everything went exactly as I was hoping and these days that rarely ever happens. Thanks Jaimie!

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

I hired Gama for a few small projects in my house. He really can do it all. From painting to flooring, and everything in between. He is always very responsive when I call and reasonably priced as well. I would definitely recommend him as a General Contractor for any home improvements.

Manny was extremely professional, he took the time to really explain to me what the issue was and the best and most cost effective way to resolve it. In addition to that he was very respectful of my tenants property and time. Thank you Manny for providing such great service, I really appreciate you coming to my property and taking care of the frozen pipe on my tenants apartment. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family for all their plumbing needs. Thanks again and take care!

Very professional, he showed up when he said he would, he didn't promise to come out and take a look at the project and NOT show up like another contractor did! He completed the project in a timely manner and I will hire him for future projects. My next door neighbor already want to hire him. The before and after pictures show his workmanship. Great Job!

I met with 4 different contractors and chose to go with Tom. I chose him based on his experience and fair pricing. Tom and his crew were excellent. They framed, insulated, sheet rocked spackled and sanded my basement. I bought my home a few years ago and have a list of projects that I want to do over the years and I will definitely use Tom again. I highly recommend Marotta Home Improvements. Thank you!

David of DIA Services was the first contractor to offer his services to me for my project. I am glad that I selected him. He was professional, courteous, friendly, and, quite simply, he did what he promised to do, when we agreed, and at a fair price. I am pleased to say that my deck is now more secure than it was before.

Deuel is one of the most “Professional” Contractors I’ve encountered in a very long time. We hired him to restore the Canopy for entrance to our home – he did such an amazing, and exact detailed job; we hired him to complete the finishings of our new custom designed driveway. He produced another master-price painting job; adding exceptional finishings to our custom designed divider/planter wall and finished off with painting Front & Garage Door. I’m very particular about detail, organization, finishings and clean-up… Deuel nails it. We’re so impressed with his “Craftsmanship” we’re planning to use him exclusively for an addition we are adding to our home… he’s an excellent Carpenter/Painter/Handyman/Contractor and only time will expose his limitless expertise…we highly recommend Deuel!

We worked with Joe from JVAS for a store that we're opening in the New York area. Joe is professional, great with communication, and does what it takes to get the job done (and done well). Our company is not from the New York area, so it was amazing that Joe would continuously send us photo updates as changes were made to our space. He takes the time to write down details as you are chatting with him and was able to see our vision for our store and help it come to life. Very glad we went with this contractor!

He is always considerate and does whatever is necessary to make sure the job is done correctly. I highly recommend him. Jane Sanders, Architect

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
