Heya — if you’re reading this, you’re likely looking for some guidance on your journey as a creative, most likely as a musician of some sort; I hope I can help.
My name is Aman, and I’m a musician; a singer, guitar player, songwriter, composer, producer, educator and sometimes writer — but those are just generic words meant for pomp and frill. I am, much more importantly, a fellow human being with music flowing through my bones and the good fortune of a vibrant and diverse life that I would love to share.
My roots are in India, Singapore and Australia, though I am currently at home in New York City and consider myself lucky to be just another earthling from anywhere. I have worked as a musician in several capacities over the last 15 years (see pomp and frill above); notable gigs to mention include my chance work with heavy music artist Devin Townsend, my involvement with the instrumental band Dave Mackay Group, and my various composition works for wildlife filmmaker Ashish Chandola, environmental and sociocultural filmmaker Douglas Varchol, and KLab’s ‘Bleach: Brave Souls’ video game. I also care deeply about my work as a creative coach and teacher — which, as pretentious as it may sound, is a truly humbling and enriching experience.
For a brief period, I wrote for Guitar Connoisseur Magazine, but most of my current musings are through and for my personal Substack publication; Comings and Goings.
While I am happy to engage in ‘standard lessons’ as a guitar teacher (this being my background as an educator and the instrument I grew up on), my sessions have evolved into a blend of teaching, coaching, co-producing and collaborating, and often go well beyond theory, technique or even music. The idea is to help you find and embolden the creative voice within you, whatever form that takes — this work can (and does!) range from simply learning things on an instrument or your voice, all the way to producing and releasing your material in whatever form you’re excited about. Unless we’re grinding away at something specific, our time together becomes a fun, motivational and explorative time for both of us, and generally ends up in a space that I feel is vital for creativity; anything goes. The work itself, play, art, philosophy, life or just… whatever! I can easily just shut up and get on with it, of course, but if I’m left to my own devices, I feel my role as a teacher goes beyond just providing information and a context for it, and I hope instead to be able to inspire, motivate and insight real passion so that you may discover what lies waiting within :)
