How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

I had the pleasure of having my hair and makeup done by Sol for my friend's birthday. She was incredibly professional and knowledgeable, I had no idea what I wanted for my makeup and hair look but she executed perfectly and I loved the final look! She was also very patient and understanding, as I was a bit nervous about the whole process. She was also very friendly and easy to talk to and made the two hours fly by. Booking with her made my day a lot more stress free, especially since she came to my house so I didn't have to worry about transportation. She created a beautiful and natural look that I absolutely loved. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a hair and makeup artist for a special occassion.

Louis was absolutely wonderful to work with. Not only is she is great at what she does, but she is also kind, polite, easy to work with, and reliable. She always showed up on time, messaged to check up on things and made the process very seamless. Even when I changed my hair at the last minute, she worked with me to give me a beautiful look for my wedding. I am so thankful for her for making my wedding less stressful because I did not have to worry about my hair and makeup once I met her. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a reliable artist with great talent and good personality.

BEWARE! WARNING! This experience was AWFUL! Coming from a person who knows how to apply makeup and do so daily... it's just extremely time consuming when I do it because I am disabled. Upon hiring Tiffany I informed her of my disabilities as well as told her I know "how-to" apply makeup... but considering it takes me a lengthy amount of time due to my ailments I needed to hire someone. I sent several pics showing Tiffany exactly what I wanted. Then when it came to the day of the appointment I again told her... no eyeshadow on the upper lids/no cut crease. Only to apply silver shadow on the eyelid and a nice wing. I wanted a timeless look... not a trendy one! After giving her details and refrence pictures months in advance... I sat down and was ready for her to apply my makeup. I did not get up until the end and at which this point went into the bathroom to look. I could not believe what I was seeing!!!! I looked like an absolute clown!!! It was clear after seeing my face she didn't listen to my requests! My forehead was orange (after I told her NO contouring) my eyes looked like raccoons (after I told her no other shadows on the upper lid... ONLY silver on the actual eyelid)... amongst the wrong foundation color for my skin tone! I looked orange on my forehead... pale as a ghost on my face ... and lines of brown (contouring - which i said I did not want) on my cheeks. My wing she applied was hideous and was a basic line sticking out from the side of my eye. after spending $178 (originally I was quoted $128... but tiffany said if I wanted "high end" makeup (which was not used... mostly drug store maleup) I would need to pay an additional $50 more) I was horrified with the outcome! I then informed her the look was not acceptable therefore she attempted to "fix it" because she said she can "fix" anything. Yet again... I gave her another chance... and yet again... I was even more disappointed! I then took my makeup remover... considering I was now late for my event... and I removed everything right in front of her!!! I then applied my own makeup for my event! After requesting a refund Tiffany.. she told me she "held up her side of the deal". After discussing my ailments with Tiffany she chose to mock me and say I was being paranoid which clearly is an insult! I have explained in detail of what the situation was when she came to me. I did not falsify or exxagerate any details! I asked her to text me 20 minutes before arrival... she only gave me 5 minutes notice. So I had to go get dressed in the other room and she had to wait 5 minutes (after she arrived) because she came sooner than I expected. It's a shame that I hired her based off of the "good" reveiws I've seen on here. This is an accurate detailed review coming from someone who has been doing makeup for 25+ years! I would NOT hire Tiffany by beats again... nor would I recommend anyone else using her services! So tiffany... well played on keeping my $178 after I sent you specific pics of what I wanted, told you over text and by phone... however you were incapable of achieving my look. As I stated to you perhaps invest that $178 in some makeup classes so that you can become a professional MUA!!! Also friends tried telling me not to go with her considering her Instagram name is MAKEUPWHORE6 Upon reading your comment back to my review... do not attempt to discredit my character because your lack of skills were no where near professional as I stated to you in a text. You're making false accusations and insinuations! I never stated anything about what your saying and these false accusations can result in slander! Furthermore I have never once watched any videos on YouTube on "how to" apply makeup! So once again your false accusations are grasping at straws trying to justify your lack of skill! Saying derogatory remarks and leading with false accusations are offensive! I have stated facts and also have video of the duration from the time you arrived from the time you left clearly showing none of what you are saying is true! I personally would have told the client I could not stay if any type of behavior like that was going on! I have given accurate details of what took place. You resorting in misleading and false comments... rather than trying to defend your work... just proves your lack of character! In reference to the YouTube videos you claim I watch on how to apply makeup... honey... go scroll down on your page Where it says: What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work? Your response is: "I am a advocate of always furthering your education no matter how many degrees or certificates you've earned. I am always researching new techniques and makeup demos to further my skills even though I am a freelance artist. This industry is always changing and you have to keep up with the trends." So apparently you are the YouTube researcher makeup artist!!! You speak about having an amazing rating... then apparently people who do not know how to apply makeup are giving you your reviews! As I stated earlier... perhaps take that $178 you charged me and apply it to some PROFESSIONAL MUA classes!!! This way you can stay off those YouTube videos! You also stated your Instagram pictures were NOT filtered. It's evident... most of those photos have a filter applied to them. I gave you multiple pictures of the way I wanted my makeup. I also gave you multiple photos of myself with the makeup on me... that I requested to be done by you. If you were incapable of creating the outcome... then you should have informed me you could not create my look. Rather than misleading me and the outcome of my look being a disaster and me having to remove it... right in front you. If the quality of your work was good.... then there would have been no need for me to remove everything and do it myself! You were just happy you got off on almost $200 for nothing! You waited 5 minutes for me to get dressed upon arriving. I specifically asked You to text me 20 minutes before arrival considering I was just getting out of the shower. You texted me when you were 5 minutes away... and that's why I need 5 minutes after you arrived... so that I could get dressed! Just goes to show people what type of person they will be hiring and you are showing others what kind of character you have. Attempting to insult a client is beyond unprofessional... especially when it's personal and false! All your actions are evident and clearly speak for themselves! Everything you wrote is coming from someone who is disgruntled because I was not pleased with the way you did my makeup! Like I said.... I've been doing makeup for 25+ years... before YouTube was even accessible! Learn to show respect for your future clients... regardless if they are not satisfied with quality of your work... it's called being a professional! The whole point of the review is to let others know how my experience went upon using your services. I'm just letting them know... your services and quality of work was so aweful... I had to literally remove everything and apply it myself. You were aware of this before leaving... because I did it right in front of you! So there is no need to be hostile, accusatory, misleading, berating or a sourpuss!
