I hired Jason for fixing my water heater and he did a great job with it (changed the heating elements and thermostats leaving the area clean). He did also help with a few questions I had about other improvements/maintenance to the house. He is professional, very courteous and was punctual to the time he promised on Thumbtack. Glad I chose him for the work. Highly recommended.

Hi my name is Jennifer, my husband & I live in a 2 story house in the Bronx. We used Joseph's services for plumbing issues we were having. Our bathroom sink was leaking water & our hot water was not working. We had Joseph come over to checkout the problem & he was very understanding about the severity of our situation. We have two kids so we needed our sink & especially our hot water working asap. Joseph was able to figure out the problem quickly. After he figured out that there was a cracked pipe under the sink & a faulty thermocouple in our hot water heater, he explained to us the procedure necessary. He sounded very familiar with these type of situations. He told us he runs into these problems quite often. My husband and I felt confident in giving him the job. Joseph was very pleasant, professional & very considerate of our property, he made sure that nothing got dirty or damaged. He even told a few silly jokes that had our children laughing. We would definitely recommend his services to others.

In the process of selling our home and needed to replace the water heater and a corroded pipe. Ed completed the job as promised and went beyond the scope of the job by replacing a rusted vent that we did not notice before. Overall we are completely satisfied and would recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing done. Thanks Ed!

Things that made this an easy experience: -He was quickly available to do the work. -He quoted me a fair price up front. -He asked for pictures so that over the phone he could tell me about things that could increase the cost before even coming out. There are a lot of contractors that worry about losing the work so they come out first and then start to explain things to you. It was nice to have that talk about my options before hand. It also meant when he came out he was prepared to do everything in one day. -He did the work quickly and was polite the whole time even when I turned the water on upstairs and accidentally got him soaked. -He never made me feel like he was in a rush or had to leave once he was done. I always save my questions for the end and even better he started explaining things to me that I was going to ask about before I even had to ask. 5 stars. I will be calling him for all my plumbing needs going forward.

Jorge was on time and very efficient. He helped me better understand the issue and even had the necessary connector hoses for the faucet even though I got the wrong ones from Home Depot. I appreciate the work he has provided and plan to look to his services again if I have any future projects.

He went out of his way to ensure that he could secure the correct parts, and he was able to remedy the issue quickly on the first visit. I definitely plan to continue to use William for any plumbing needs at any of my properties.

Herbert responded to my emergency effortlessly. I reached out to him about my hot water heater on Friday afternoon. Being it was the end of the week I didn’t think I would have gotten such a quick response, but I did. My water heater was replaced by Sunday. He came in replaced the heater, had it up & running. I was down for a minimal of 2 hrs. He did an AWESOME job. I’m very happy with the work he did & I think a friendship was born. He will be referred to anyone I know looking for a plumber. Thankful Herbert

Sink fixture installation| Lowering temperature of water heater Nicholas was patient, professional, punctual, and polite! From the beginning, he was patient conversing with me not only to get an understanding of what needed to be done, but also specifics to pick up (product wise). Extremely professional and personable! Having a baby in the home means extra precautions, and he was more than understanding of this, and even fixed the water temperature for free. We will definitely be calling him back within the next two weeks to do some more maintenance around the house. Thank you !!!!

Every time I have a ac or water boiler issue he will be my first and only call. All the other hvac people are crooks. Not this man. If you want someone to not give up and charge you an excellent price. This is your guy.

Hired Gio to replace the leaking water heater. I have previously worked with Gio so I decided to work with him again. Gio is very professional and does things thoroughly. He not only replaced the water heater, but also checked for other leakage, flush the pipe, and cleaned the floor when the job was done. Highly recommend.

i hired james to take a look at my wall hung boiler that supplies hot water for heat and hot water. i thought my return valve was dead and needed to be swapped out. after a couple of trials we figured out that the line might be frozen. as hard as it was to believe i had to wait it out and sure enough when the weather warmed up the heat started to flow. he didn't do anything technical just a couple of test to see what could be wrong but he saved me a ton of money if i would have went to a large company for same issue.

Raymond is a professional boiler mechanic and knows what he is doing. Our furnace was short cycling and Raymond figured out that the furnace was set to such a high temperature that it caused the water pump to shut off. Raymond lowered the temp on the furnace and also let out the old air and dirty water from the furnace. Raymond solved the problem and gave us a great price.

Super. I hired him for replacing my older water heater to the new one. He was efficient, professional and responsible. The job took longer time than expected due to the mismatch between two heaters, but he was able to complete it and the new water heater functions well. He provided the invoice as I asked and the amount I was charged was exactly same as the quote. I am willing to ask him for another work in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.
