Your burning questions: answered

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a photographer when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a photographer, see if the photographer can take photos outdoors or in a large space so all involved parties can maintain the recommended distance between themselves. You should also sanitize surfaces, avoid handshakes, don’t make any other physical contact and use digital platforms to complete payments. Speak with a local photographer in your area to put a strategy in place.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Aaahhhh Mary Mor!! I found her on Thumbtack and was looking for an affordable but quality photographer to take some pics of my husband and I for our first visit to NYC. We were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary and I wanted some nice photos to remember the trip! Mary and her assistant delivered and then some! They were both kind, funny, patient and have an incredible eye for the shot. Most of these photos are with her camera, but one she took with my iPhone and taught me how to edit. Highly recommend this dynamic duo 💜

This was the first time I tried using this app to try to find a photographer for a very specific photo. I wasn’t sure if I was gonna get a response from anyone, but JOCO Media responded in less than 12 hours. Talking to Joel, he made me feel very confident about this picture I was trying to capture, but more importantly as a Student at Fordham Univeristy the price was extremely affordable, and Joel was able to work around my class schedule! Thanks again Joel!

Maria was very friendly and professional before, during, and after the event. She took both spontaneous and standing pictures of us and even of our guests whenever they requested. The price was very affordable and she sent us the final pictures within 24 hrs of the event as she promised. We loved her work and highly recommend her if you are searching for a photographer to take nice memorable pictures of your event. Thank you Maria!!

Kevin is easily one of the best photographers i have worked with. He is kind, hospitable and extremely professional! He has an amazing studio setup which is super clean and even smells fantastic. His studio includes many different colored backgrounds and ample supply of professional lighting equipment. I believe Kevin shoots on a Canon 5d Mark 3 and the best part is that he has a tethered setup via lightroom. ( This means you can see your photos live on a tv display he has linked up as you or your model is being shot ). Kevin shot over 700 photos for my project and not once did he complain or show any sign of frustration ( very rare to find ). At the end of our shoot, he provided me with a complimentary 8GB Sony Usb flash drive for my photos. This is great because i dont have to go through the hassle of downloading my images from google drive or dropbox. To top it off, Kevin has a super affordable rate, even better than some of the less experienced and less equipped photographers i have worked with in the past! I will most definitely be working with Kevin again on future projects!

We were in the bind needing a headshot including makeup and hair "like tomorrow" in NYC. Dorothy went to great strides to have everything organized within a couple of hours of contacting her. As soon as we landed in NYC, Dorothy Shi and Chris Lanston [makeup and hair] went to work creating a masterpiece for musical theatre to be used at a Broadway audition for my daughter. By the time we walked out of the studio we had edited photos ready to use. Her prices were outstanding as I really expected to pay 5x as much in Manhattan which makes it affordable to use her more often. In addition, Dorothy connected us with two talent agencies we otherwise wouldn't have known. We will definitely be using Dorothy for all of our photography needs in NYC.

Working with Yun Li is one of the best experiences I have had, not only on Thumbtack, but with any photographer. From our first phone call, she made me feel like she truly cared about our entire experience and the fact that these photos held special sentimental meaning to us. She made it her priority to answer all of our questions in an extremely timely and friendly way, and to make sure we were happy. At no point did we ever feel pressured, worried, nervous, or uncertain of what to expect. Her positive spirit and generosity with her time remained throughout the duration of our project—she treated it like a collaboration and we felt like we were all part of a team. Her raw talent shows through her magical edits and photo composition, and in the way that despite being in a very crowded area, she can position you and herself in a way that makes it look like there was not another soul in sight, or, at least, in the frame. On the other hand, she can work crowds into a photo in a unique and artful way as well, because she is so versatile. Her vibrant use of color and intuition with depth perception are superb. Yun Li was so kind and thoughtful about everything from her emails to her pose suggestions, and she is one of those rare individuals for whom you know that her passion for the work is more important than anything else. We felt like the value was absolutely incredible, as it is rare to find someone that is flexible and affordable but produces the quality work of someone who could easily charge a great deal more. I would recommend Yun Li hundreds of times over and we will absolutely come back to her for our next photo shoot as well.
