Introduction: Note: I only teach online unless you live in/near Philadelphia, PA or Princeton, NJ. An experienced performer and teacher, I have been teaching privately since 2014. I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Royal College of Music, and Belgium’s Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. I have experience as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of an orchestra; I play frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra, am a former member of the Indianapolis Symphony, I founded the the New York-based ensemble132, and I have performed at the Marlboro Music Festival. I usually work with intermediate through college students. Due to my active performance career, I primarily teach remotely. My teaching philosophy relies – as it did with my own professors – guiding my students in ways that will make them more technically-proficient instrumentalists and more capable and expressive musicians. I employ a flexible repertoire of scales & arpeggios, exercises, and pieces through which I take my students, making sure they cover key repertoire that either matches or slightly pushes their technical level, always with the goal of reaching a higher level that will enable them to play more difficult and satisfying pieces. I guide them through etudes, scales, and arpeggios as I see fit, although I make sure that these never become too tedious and that I favor time spent on actual pieces. I use the same basic approach regardless of whether you are pursuing music as a career or you're doing it just for the love of it. That being said, I do adapt to each student’s needs and goals. I can, and often do, give advice on navigating academic and professional landscapes to those who want it. I can help you prepare for any audition and can share my experience of applying to and participating in music programs and conservatories. I also will push a student if they and their family want that, especially if they are seeking a career in music. My main goal at the end of the day, is to help my students find a deeper connection to the music they love. This will always be my focus, whether I'm helping you get to the next stage in your development or preparing for an audition/recital. To achieve this I help them develop greater freedom and facility on their instrument while also instilling fundamental musical principles.

When I first went to Mr. Mowitz, I hoped to improve my cello technique above all else. As a result, Mr. Mowitz prescribed me a customized list of repertoire to practice that would help me focus on technique including the Popper etudes, the Bach suites, and the Cossman exercises. However, to ensure that our lessons would not purely be technique-based, Mr. Mowitz helped me understand the musical beauty behind more lyrical pieces such as the Boccherini cello concerto or the Saint Saens cello concerto while also demonstrating the techniques we'd been practicing in application to these concertos. Mr. Mowitz never assumes a fully comprehensive understanding of cello technique and musicality even for his intermediate-advanced students (which I would have considered myself as when I started to learn from him) and thus always has something new to teach as much as he reminds his students of the importance of certain fundamentals like a relaxed body when playing. I would say with full confidence that my cello playing significantly improved under Mr. Mowitz. His teaching helped me gain access by audition to advanced musical opportunities such as performing in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and participating in the Snitzer Quartet in the Settlement Music School Advanced Study Program. These opportunities, in turn, and the musical "arts supplements" for cello that I eventually made furthermore helped me gain admission into schools including Harvard and Stanford, on what I would consider was largely a technical base taught to me by Mr. Mowitz. I truly hope that more people are able to experience the blessing of Mr. Mowitz's teaching!

Zachary Mowitz is not only an incredible cellist and accomplished performer, but a thoughtful and engaging teacher. He was committed to my progress as a string player and as a well-rounded musician. He had many useful suggestions while being supportive of my own decisions/interpretations. In fact, he encouraged me to always search for my own sound and this broadened my musical perspective greatly. I highly recommend Mr. Mowitz if you’re looking for a dedicated and inspiring teacher for all levels of cello playing.

Zach is a fantastic cello teacher - he was very patient and clear in explaining physical movements for the sounds I wanted, in a very simple and understandable way. Can't wait to work together again

Thinking of changing from piano to a stringed instrument, I took some beginning cello lessons. I was impressed with Mr. Mowitz’s musicality, intelligence and generosity as a teacher. Best music teacher I’ve ever had; much better than my piano teacher.
