Introduction: Note: I only teach online unless you live in/near Philadelphia, PA or Princeton, NJ.
An experienced performer and teacher, I have been teaching privately since 2014. I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Royal College of Music, and Belgium’s Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. I have experience as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of an orchestra; I play frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra, am a former member of the Indianapolis Symphony, I founded the the New York-based ensemble132, and I have performed at the Marlboro Music Festival.
I usually work with intermediate through college students. Due to my active performance career, I primarily teach remotely.
My teaching philosophy relies – as it did with my own professors – guiding my students in ways that will make them more technically-proficient instrumentalists and more capable and expressive musicians. I employ a flexible repertoire of scales & arpeggios, exercises, and pieces through which I take my students, making sure they cover key repertoire that either matches or slightly pushes their technical level, always with the goal of reaching a higher level that will enable them to play more difficult and satisfying pieces. I guide them through etudes, scales, and arpeggios as I see fit, although I make sure that these never become too tedious and that I favor time spent on actual pieces.
I use the same basic approach regardless of whether you are pursuing music as a career or you're doing it just for the love of it. That being said, I do adapt to each student’s needs and goals. I can, and often do, give advice on navigating academic and professional landscapes to those who want it. I can help you prepare for any audition and can share my experience of applying to and participating in music programs and conservatories. I also will push a student if they and their family want that, especially if they are seeking a career in music.
My main goal at the end of the day, is to help my students find a deeper connection to the music they love. This will always be my focus, whether I'm helping you get to the next stage in your development or preparing for an audition/recital. To achieve this I help them develop greater freedom and facility on their instrument while also instilling fundamental musical principles.
