We spent a great afternoon with Janice at our home today --- While our dog is #1 (fewest) on the list of problems she usually deals with, she fitted us into her busy schedule, which was not just an aide for our family/pack but also for Laura who she is training as another dog therapist... Janice explained to all of us the pack psychology and ways to work on modifying behavior...who knew that diet was a large part of the puzzle? Or that early dog-hood experiences would have such a lasting innate behavioral underpinning... We are looking forward to growing with what we have learned

Sal was great! By the time he left our Wheaton pup was sitting, lying down and coming when called. We loved his gentle positive method of training and the pup was sleeping on his foot at the end of the session.

Words can't describe how much Ariana means to us. After rescuing a 72lb AmStaff with behavioral issues, we asked Ariana to help guide us through training our sweet, strong boy. Ariana's tireless patience, humor and knowledge made training our dog a fun, bonding experience instead of a stressful one. Her commitment to ensuring our collective success and a healthy, happy dog was evident in every hour she spent with us. Work with Ariana- she is a joy who also knows her dog training stuff!

Joan's approach to behavioral training is very integrated taking into account the dog's environment, diet, and activity level. It's so nice to have a trainer that can make additional recommendations beyond the standard behavioral instructions to include changes in dietary and health needs to improve the training process. We asked Joan for help with our Dachshund/Poodle cross after repeated accidents in the apartment. Within two sessions we were communicating with our puppy to understand when she needs to go out, when she just wants to play, etc. Joan has been a huge help, she's punctual and extraordinarily good with the dogs and brings a tremendous value to the process beyond just learning how to "sit." As with any dog trainer it's important to know that as the owner you're being trained as well requiring a good dose of humility. Joan handles this without condescension and always remains positive. I recommend her for training and general dog care consulting!

we recently got a new 3.5 month old frenchie who is just so adorable but had some habits set in, from her litter buddies. we contacted karin for help on where to begin and how to train our frenchie into the city lifestyle. our first meeting with karin, opened up our eyes on some bad habits that we didn’t know we were promoting with our puppy. karin was thorough in explaining puppy behavior and how our frenchie understands our body language. yesterday was our third meeting with karin and beau (our frenchie) is very much familiar with the emergency recall, sit, sit with stay, come, down, crate, walking on a loose leash, behaving appropriately with other dogs (our older frenchie) and potty training. also, karin has been available through text at all times during the day and night. she likes to know when beau has done something good or bad at the time it happens, so that any bad learning can be addressed immediately. we are so thankful for meeting karin and can’t wait for our next sessions.

Sean Ryan is quite simply, the best of the best. He is honest, straight forward, supportive, and encouraging. The investment in training with City Wolves is priceless. When I sent my rescue dog Levon to training he was nervous and fearful to a debilitating level. He was great with people, great with dogs, but absolutely horrible with modern technology. The sound of a car door shutting would send him scrambling for the hills and he was afraid to walk on any kind of indoor flooring. The entire process was exceptional, Sean kept me posted on all of his progress and provided status updates constantly. After four weeks in the Board & Train program, Levon was a completely different dog. Sean gave him a base level of confidence which I could simply never have provided him with. His approach with dogs is very intelligent, calm and respectful. He provided me with the tools to work together and communicate with Levon. I'm confident that his board and train program is the absolute best offered in our area. Structured, safe, and just an amazing environment for a dog to be in when they aren't at home. Sean continues to provide support, answer questions and genuinely shows that he cares long after the training session is complete.

Bruce has been very patient and informative. He has helped me decide whether a service dog was right for me by providing the crucial information that I couldn't find online. The guidance has been extremely reassuring. I look forward to the process of finding and training a dog with Bruce.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Truly fantastic and unique dog training experience. Chelsea had so much patience and genuine interest as I spoke with her (endlessly, on multiple occasions) about all of my concerns about my 11-year old adopted Shiba mix who grew up as a street dog in China. Gingko has not been an easy dog for me to deal with, but Chelsea has helped me not only manage but understand her barking and snapping behaviors. She's not just interested in obedience - she wants to help create a symbiotic relationship between you and your dog, so that each of you are happy and safe. I always imagined training to be just lots of clicker-treat-clicker-treat stuff (doesn't work with Gingko, who thinks treats are a trap). But Chelsea's full of clever, practical, and easy solutions that prevent unwanted behaviors from happening in the first place. Can't recommend her highly enough.

I had a Skype consultation with Peter. He is extraordinary and really knows the way dogs act, behave and should be trained. His advice and help really was all the difference in my dogs behavior. I really was my wits end trying to find a good trainer who didn't use food. He has very simple and effective techniques that, when applied consistently, worked like a charm. My dog is on a raw food diet and on the road to being a well mannered member of the family. I don't know what I'd have done with out him! Well, I do actually, I'd have been miserable living with an undisciplined dog! He helped me understand that dog training isnt a temporary fix, it is a life long commitment. Thanks Caine!

I have known Rachel (and her dog Dustin) for years and they are both terrific. Rachel took care of my border collie, Winston, for many years - - and he loved her. I totally trusedt Rachel with Winston - - and would trust her with any dog I owned or was responsible for. She understands dogs and is super at training. Dustin, Rachel's own dog, is a master of tricks - self-taught by Rachel - - and she did a great job. I feel very comfortable recommending Rachel to care for your dog.

I cannot recommend Adam from Casper Dog Training enough! He took his time to tailor his training to our needs with our dog, making sure we understood what he was doing the entire time. His patience, understanding, and professionalism made him amazing to work with without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. We will definitely continue dog training with Adam, he was a very calming presence and made sure to answer all of our questions and concerns before he finished. He was very thorough and left us with great tips to make sure we knew exactly how to continue to work with our dog.

Emily is one the best trainers in town!! Don't hesitate for a second and try her classes out. I started training my dog Tank when he was 9 months old. He had no impulse control and would jump and try to bite my face. I thought he was untrainable. After only 2 months Tank was able to pass his CGC which is a test used to test a dog's good behavior. Emily uses positive training and knows different training methods to get the best results. She really is the best trainer in town.

Andrea and her husband John go above and beyond to take care of our dog, a shy rescue who needed help to open up. Great value for our money. Our pup is tired out from having so much fun with her doggy friends during her walks and greets us calmly when we get home. She's also now better about welcoming strangers to pet her. Highly recommend!

I adopted a one year old lab –pit mix a month ago. Soon after I brought him home-I realized that he is not really house broken and loves to chew on everything. I did some research on dog trainers in my area and man- they are pricey. Came across Anastasia’s profile -prices seemed fair plus looked like she was offering more than just an obedience training for the same price. I am so happy we hired her. Sammy learned how settle and get in into his crate with no fuss in a matter of few minutes on a first session, we also established a few house rules and thanks to her recommendation for food – Sammy’s coat improved and poop too. Thank you Anastasia!

We had a very frustrated and mischievous puppy with a broken leg. We tried every trick we found in books but other than learning how to give paw, we were less then successful in training our puppy. One day, while walking down the street I saw a woman working with a dog who was following her orders instantly. I could not wait to ask her for her help. It was the best decision we ever made. Not only did she have creative ideas on how to help release our puppy's bottled up energy but she also helped train her to be a loving and calmer family dog. As we got the dog primarily for our three young son, Jenny was sure to include them in the dog training. She even went out of her way by teaching them tricks which made their interaction safer and more fun!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
