  • EZ Pass in Math

    (34 reviews)

I have more than 10 years of experience in tutoring Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus, Geometry, Trigonometry for College, High school and Middle school students. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Math and Computer Science from University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in Computer Science from University of Bridgeport. I started tutoring in 2005 in the University of Wisconsin Math lab as a Math and Computer Science tutor. I was recognized as the most outstanding tutor of the year 2008. I was chosen for this honor out of twenty Math tutors. While I was in University of Bridgeport, I had been a Math tutor at Academic Resource center and teaching assistant for Intermediate Algebra, Discrete Math and Database Management Systems in 2014 - 2015. During that time I helped lectures to grade and prepare exam papers in addition to lecturing Math classes in the absence of professors. Also I do have experience in tutoring Math sections of SAT, ACT, GED tests and Quantitative section of GRE and GMAT tests. I helped so many students to achieve high scores in the Math/Quantitative sections of above tests. My hours are very flexible, and I am available weekdays afternoon and weekends. I travel Westchester and Fairfield counties.

  • Justus Prep - SAT/ACT/College App & Essay

    (32 reviews)

Because I've tutored for so long and know the SAT and how to teach it to students with varying ability, I can quickly devise an individualized plan of study for each student and tailor the exercises to improve weak areas and bring up test scores. I also use computer software that analyzes the types of questions a particular student gets wrong, the difficulty levels of the questions, the time it takes for the student to answer each question, among other things. It's actually a very helpful software. I've taught with it and without it, and it's apparent that when I use the software, I diagnose weaknesses more accurately and efficiently. Not only does it pinpoint the problem areas, it saves a lot of time. I most enjoy the relationships I get to build with my students during our sessions. Although the tutoring sessions consist mostly of instruction and practice, I oftentimes get a chance to talk about life/future goals, and I try to encourage all of my students to work hard and to do the hard things now, believing that one day, the hard work will pay off. I also love hearing from my students about their actual SAT scores. It's a great feeling when I receive a call or text from one of my students telling me that he/she broke 2000, or got a 12 on the essay, or a perfect score on one section. I'm sure the student feels satisfied, but I get to participate in and enjoy their accomplishments as well.

My results speak for themselves. My average SAT Student increases his/her score by over 500 points; no one else can make such a claim. I achieve the same results for ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, and DAT students. While there will always be good Instructors out there, it is the results I achieve that make people utilize my services. Helping change students' lives by helping them achieve scores that open up doors of opportunity to them that they never dreamed possible.

  • Take Note Lessons

    (21 reviews)

I am a full-time professional tutor with over a decade of experience. Many people teach the SAT and ACT as part-time work. I have my own company and teach students standardized tests every day. My teachers and I keep the lessons fun and engaging. I personally hire all of my instructors. We are a small company with an excellent track record. I have a unique curriculum that is a mix of old and new teaching methods. I have been chosen as a top Thumbtack professional for two years in a row. Our students have raised their scores as much as 500 points on the SAT. On the ACT, we have had students increase their scores as much as 10 points in a single section. Our students have been accepted to top schools including Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania. I enjoy the relationships I develop with families. I particularly enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I get when students achieve their academic and personal goals. There is nothing I like better than hearing that one of my students has been accepted to his or her top choice school. I work hard to help the majority of my students achieve this.

  • Jim Treadway Tutoring

    (13 reviews)

I'm a Personality Type expert in addition to a teacher/tutor, so I'm uniquely attuned to the different thinking, testtaking, and interpersonal styles of each student. I have experience (and excellent reviews) teaching people both one-on-one and in small classes (2-6 people), mid-size and large classes (up to as many as 35 students in a room). I love the art and science of managing a fun but productive one-on-one or classroom-wide learning experience. I thrive at explaining things simply (step - by step - by step - by step...), and doing so vividly. Patience comes easily to me, too. I plan our work in depth, in advance: from short-term to mid-term and long-term goals, to going through your mock exams problem by problem to find the very specific errors you might be making, to sending you follow-up emails after each lesson so that you can be sure of exactly what we're accomplishing, when, and where that leaves us on track to our over-arching objective. I also hone in on the "lowest hanging fruits" of each test - the easiest areas to boost your score - be they content knowledge like grammar or plane geometry, or specific strategies like how to approach a Reading passage - and I really focus on those parts, so your score can jump. like to put these tests in a broader perspective: of learning how to learn, how to identify and admit to what you don't know, how to find specific ways of practicing those tangible skills, how to take a big scary problem and break it down into each of its tiniest component parts (doing each one, THEN worrying about what the next step will be), and how to make work a constant but not-oversized part of your life, so that achievement and pride and confidence become constants in your life. Connecting with students; the thrill of progress; learning about learning; learning about teaching.

  • Cohen Math Prep

    (8 reviews)

Cohen Math Prep is a tutoring service started by a teacher and tutor. I know that it is as important to know the skill/craft that you are teaching as to know the skill/craft of teaching itself. All of my tutors and I have a passion for the subjects we teach. Many of the big tutoring companies hire tutors based on their graduating from prestigious universities or high test scores with little to no concern over their ability or passion to teach. A potential tutor's facility in a subject has very little effect on a student if he/she cannot communicate with and understand that student. I absolutely love when my students have a breakthrough. There is no greater feeling in my job than the one I get when I see a student finally understand a concept or master a skill that had been previously a great source of frustration. Good test scores and good grades are always nice to see, but knowing that my students know is more of a reward for me.

  • Murat Keyder

    (3 reviews)

My name is Murat. I have a degree in mathematics from Cornell and a score of 1570 form the old SAT. I also have a score of 800 on the GRE math and a score of 670 on the GRE verbal section. I have a lot of experience teaching many different subjects, and I am a very patient teacher. I love explaining concepts and trying to get students to really understand math topics, rather than just trying to get people to memorize shortcuts. My clients range from elementary school students trying to understand basic concepts to high school students struggling with algebra or the SAT. Whatever the level of the student, I love helping them really understand the concepts involved at a deeper level and getting them to actually enjoy math.

Thumbtack Spotlight

Crimson Scholars (Thumbtack Best of 2015 & 2016)

(17 reviews)

What do you love about your job?

One of the greatest parts of my job is being the voice of reason, motivation, and hope for many parents and students. Often times, tutees come in with misaligned goals and expectations. For example, they may think that a couple of weeks is enough to prepare their college application. I get the opportunity to reset and place them on a more successful path. I coach and mentor them on their journey, and at the end, they reward me with a message about their academic improvement or college acceptance. Their happiness from their achievements is nothing short of wonderful to see.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?

Khan Academy, EdX, the Common Core set out to fix various problems in American education. Each has taken great steps to improve the accessibility and quality of education. They inspired me to create Crimson Scholars and address problems that I saw with traditional tutoring. Well qualified educators have a difficult time finding students to teach. Parents and students also have a hard time meeting the right tutor. So I built an online tutoring service to help simplify the process. With no traveling involved, scheduling becomes much easier, and students gained access to outstanding tutors who were not previously available. I did not want to stop at just making lessons more convenient. I wanted to make them better. So Crimson Scholars built its own iPad and web app to make lessons more interactive, enough to rival traditional teaching. We also trained each of our tutors to develop personalized, student-centered learning: fewer lectures, more targeted discussions, and cooperative practices. I hope that as we grow, Crimson Scholars will be able to make as big of an impact on supplemental education as Khan Academy, EdX, and the Common Core have on general education.
