About
ONE-TIME INTRO TO SINGING WORKSHOP Child/Teen ~60min - $35 Adult ~120min - $40 In this private one-time introductory class for learners who love to sing, we will learn an overview of singing, learn some easy singing tips, and perform a partial song. This is a one-time private class that can be used as an introduction to singing for new students. I will: (1) go over some mindsets about learning to sing; (2) give a quick overview of the basic concepts I use to structure my lessons; (3) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing; (4) listen to a song cut chosen by the learner (please let me know the name of the song prior to the class); (5) apply a singing tip to the song cut; and (6) give general assessment and answer any questions regarding the lesson and learner's goals. This class can also be a consultation to help new students choose which type of class to enroll in (shy, recreational, pro - see below for class descriptions). *************************************************************************************** Hello! I teach voice and acting to people of all ages who love to sing, who think they can't sing, or who would like to sing more athletically than they currently do. I teach online and in person at my studio in New York City near Times Square. I provide additional acting (voice & speech), piano accompanying, and self-taping services for professional musical theatre students. ***Discounts available for recreational singers, children, and college students.*** INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP: $35/~45-60 min (children/teens) $40/~90 min (adults) $50/~120 min (professional adults - please send headshot, resume, and rep/audition book) RECREATIONAL ADULTS and CHILDREN (Age 8-17): $35/30 min (recommended for children) $50/45 min $60/60 min SELF-SUPPORTING TEENS & COLLEGE STUDENTS: $30/30 min PROFESSIONAL COACHING or AUDITION PREP: $100/120 min (adults) I am a vocal coach and troubleshooter with 25+ years of experience as a private voice teacher, audition coach, music director, and piano accompanist. I enjoy providing practical, affordable and tailored lessons to aspiring athletes and artists pursuing their dreams to belt out on Broadway, let loose with karaoke, or rock out with a local band. I really enjoy troubleshooting difficult songs and helping my students who are passionately committed to their goals but who have limited time and finances for a more traditional curriculum. I welcome students who find it more difficult to learn with exercises and scales, and I welcome students who need more flexibility with their scheduling. My main expertise is coaching professional dancers, singers, and actors to: (1) sing a variety of styles (especially pop/rock), (2) build a brand-specific audition book, (3) develop a strong and flexible speaking voice, (4) prepare sides and monologues for callbacks, and (5) explore a storyteller mindset. Although I work primarily with young professionals, I also enjoy serving recreational learners whose musical dreams may simply be to: (1) learn a new song, (2) sing karaoke with friends, or (3) jam out alone with YouTube. For both recreational and professional learners, I hope to instill a love and joy of singing and acting without the pressure of grades, perfection, and judges. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers' Association), NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Voice Foundation, VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) PHILOSOPHY: Practical troubleshooting is the main driving force behind my lessons. As a coach, I often meditate on the following questions: (1) How do we make sounds and communicate with speech and song? (2) How do we convert 2D symbols (text) into a 3D body (performer) and create a 4D emotional experience (audience)? (3) How do we use these skills to live more freely, intentionally, and expressively? I hope to instill an appreciation for and a desire to answer these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the students that I meet will continually learn to be useful artists. My main goal as a teacher is to share my knowledge and experience in a personalized way so that my students no longer need me to reach their goals, that they are able to teach themselves, and that, ultimately, they become fellow collaborators and troubleshooters. **************************************************************************************** COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FOR CHILDREN/TEENS (Age 8-18): (1) ONE-TIME INTRO TO SINGING, VOCAL COACHING, OR AUDITION PREP (Age 6-18 ~60min $35): In this private one-time introductory class for learners who love to sing, we will learn an overview of singing, learn some easy singing tips, and perform a partial song. This class can also be a consultation to help new students choose which type of class to enroll in (shy, recreational, pro). For recreational students ("So You Can Sing"), the learners usually choose the songs they want to sing each week, and I provide singing tips for them to apply to their songs. In general, the recreational singers that I teach listen to a lot of songs, and they really enjoy singing with karaoke tracks or with the recording artists. For shy students ("So You Think You Can't Sing"), I first assess whether the student needs extra help with skills to gain confidence or if the student wants a more private space to learn and perform. The learners usually choose the songs they want to sing, and I provide singing tips for them to apply to their songs. I will usually spend a little more time on technique with shy students. For pro students ("So You Think You Can Sing"), both learners and I choose songs, and the students learn more technique and performance skills. We will learn to sight read various audition cuts and learn how to sing various singing styles (music theatre, pop, rock, country, jazz, classical/legit). We will also develop the speaking voice and practice auditioning and performing skills. (2) SO YOU CAN SING or SO YOU THINK YOU CAN'T SING - Private Voice Lessons (Age 8-18) ($35/30 min): In this private one-on-one class for learners who love to sing and think they can sing or think they can't sing, we will learn new mindsets about singing, practice and apply some easy singing tips to a song cut, and perform a partial song. We will: (1) learn some new mindsets about singing; (2) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing, including the eyes; (3) learn some basic musicianship skills; (4) learn some easy ways to connect with ourselves and others through movement; and (5) learn a variety of songs chosen primarily by the learner. In general, we will spend most of the time on repertoire, and we will learn primarily through demonstration, application, and practice. All conceptual learning (rhythm, solfege, pitch matching, sight reading, expressive movements, etc.) will be applied to a song. As children in the 8-13 age group can differ widely in their physical and mental development, I will adjust the classes accordingly to be more exercise-based or performance-based depending on the learner's personality and learner's goals. Before each class, please let me know what song(s) you would like to sing, and please have a second device to play accompaniment tracks. Please note that, in my experience, the 8-11 year-old learners who seem to thrive in this weekly ongoing class are children who love to sing all day long and seem to never have a shortage of songs that they are listening to or wanting to learn. Since this is primarily a recreational class, if the child does not have a clear goal of wanting to perfect old songs or learn new songs each week, they will most likely get bored with lessons, which is very normal and not indicative of singing ability. They will most likely thrive instead in a social group class or performance class, choir, or school/community musical. If you are unsure about enrolling in weekly lessons, please consider a one-time lesson or consultation (request a time that works for you). Another option is to try weekly lessons for about 4 weeks and then take intermittent lessons until your child is older and ready for more formal or professional training. (3) SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SING - Private Voice Lessons (Age 12-18) ($50/45 min): In this one-on-one class for learners who love to sing, we will build a repertoire of songs while learning a variety of singing and performing tips. This is a class primarily structured for growth mindset learners who love to sing and who are willing to challenge themselves, make mistakes, troubleshoot difficulties, and build connections. This class is also structured to introduce learners to the mindset and habits of professional performing artists. No prior experience is necessary, but a desire to sing lots of songs and a willingness to learn and grow is ideal for a commitment to weekly ongoing lessons. If you are not sure if this class is right for you, please consider enrolling in a one-time class or consultation prior to enrolling in a subscription: This class will primarily be repertoire-based. We will learn a variety of songs that learners want to sing and songs that I believe will help learners be better prepared for a future in the performing arts. We will also learn real audition cuts and build an audition book. Sometimes I will provide the sheet music or learners will need to purchase sheet music from Musicnotes (~$6.00). Throughout the ongoing classes, learners will also: (1) learn some new mindsets about what it means to be a performer and storyteller; (2) learn the actual pitches and rhythms of a variety of audition cuts of pop/rock and musical theatre songs; (3) learn singing tips to build performance confidence; (4) learn some easy ways to connect with themselves and with an audience; (5) learn how to self-tape for auditions; (6) learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); (7) learn voice and speech tips to prepare for "slates" and "sides"; and (8) learn easy movements to be an expressive performer. Practical troubleshooting will be the main driving force behind this class. I hope to instill a beginner's appreciation for and a desire to start answering these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the learners of this class will continually learn to be useful artists. (4) SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SING - Voice Lessons for Broadway Bound Performers (Age 14-18) ($60/60 min): In this private class for learners who are willing to challenge themselves, we will build a repertoire of music theatre and pop/rock songs, learn performance and audition tips, and practice the singing skills of a Broadway performer. This is a class primarily structured for learners who are interested in the growth mindset and habits of professional performing artists and who are curious about what it's like to pursue a career on Broadway. This is also a class for learners who simply love to sing and who are willing to challenge themselves, make mistakes, troubleshoot difficulties, and build connections. No prior experience is necessary, but a desire to sing a variety of songs and a willingness to learn and grow is ideal for a commitment to weekly ongoing lessons. If you are not sure if this class is right for you, please consider enrolling in a one-time class or consultation prior to enrolling in a subscription. In this class, both student and I will choose songs.  We will learn various singing styles (music theatre, pop, rock, country, jazz, classical/legit) and build a standard Broadway audition book.  We will also develop the speaking voice and practice auditioning and performing skills. Sometimes I will provide the sheet music or learners will need to purchase sheet music from Musicnotes (~$6.00). Throughout the ongoing classes, students will learn: (1) growth mindsets of professional performers and storytellers; (2) pitches and rhythms of a variety of audition cuts of pop/rock and musical theatre songs; (3) singing tips to build performance confidence; (4) easy ways to connect with themselves and with an audience; (5) introduction to self-taping for auditions; (6) the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); (7) voice and speech tips to prepare for "slates" and "sides"; and (8) easy movements to be an expressive performer. (3) How do we use these skills to live more freely, intentionally, and expressively? I hope to instill a beginner's appreciation for and a desire to start answering these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the learners of this class will continually learn to be useful artists.

Wow, I don’t even know where to start — but I’ll begin by saying how grateful I am that SD was my first choice when I started looking for singing lessons. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she turned out to be more than just a great teacher — she’s full of energy, encouragement, and always brings good vibes to every lesson.

I’ve been taking lessons with her for over a year now via Zoom, and for the past six months, we’ve met every week. I have dyslexia, and for a long time I saw it as something negative — but SD never did. She helped me see it in a new light. Anytime I didn’t understand something, she would always find a new way to explain it so it made sense to me.

I was never someone who believed much in luck, but every time our lesson ends, I can’t help but feel lucky to know someone like SD.

I’ve been working with SD since late 2022. As someone who has performed in musical theatre recreationally, I was curious about stepping into a more professional world—and SD played a significant role in guiding me down that path. Working with her gave me confidence in styles I hadn’t explored much before, especially pop and rock genres beyond traditional musical theatre. She helped me develop an ear for technique—now I can listen to a singer and identify the vocal methods they’re using. If you want, you also have the chance to sing duets with other students and perform in front of an audience—experiences that helped me rediscover the joy of singing and grow more comfortable on stage. SD even offers the option to record your singing during lessons or performances, which gives you valuable material to watch back and work on independently. As a non-native English speaker, I also received invaluable support with pronunciation, which made a big difference in my performances. And beyond singing, I gained tools to improve my acting—especially when it came to expressing emotion and intention during a song. SD helped me connect more deeply to the material, making each performance feel more honest and impactful. Whether you want to grow as a singer without losing the joy of music, feel burned out from routine practice, hope to explore different musical styles, or dream of truly moving people—not just sing well—with your voice, SD can help. Beyond all the technical progress, what stayed with me the most is the way SD teaches from the heart. Working with her felt like joining a community—and at times, even like gaining a mentor or a life coach. She brings warmth, presence, and deep care into every session. She’s made a meaningful impact on my musical journey, and I believe she can do the same for you.

SD Lewis is the best voice teacher I’ve ever worked with. She takes the time to truly understand you as a vocalist and tailors exercises to help you develop your unique sound. Since working with her, I feel much more confident in my singing. I finally understand how to control my voice and use it with purpose.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Consultation/Introductory Workshop available - If you are new to singing lessons and would like (1) a consultation, (2) more time to prepare audition materials, or (3) a one-time Intro to Singing class, please feel free to request a longer workshop session.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

If you have never taken voice lessons, or you are unsure about what to expect from voice lessons, you may read the following to help clarify your goals to me as I structure lessons differently for the recreational and professional learner. PROFESSIONAL: In general, both student and I will choose songs. We will learn various singing styles (music theatre, pop, rock, country, jazz, classical/legit) and build a standard Broadway audition book. We will also develop the speaking voice and prepare for auditions and performances. Sometimes I will provide the sheet music or learners will need to purchase sheet music. Throughout the lessons, students will: (1) learn some new mindsets about what it means to be a performer and storyteller; (2) learn the pitches and rhythms of a variety of audition cuts of pop/rock and musical theatre songs; (3) learn singing tips to build performance confidence; (4) learn some easy ways to connect with themselves and with an audience; (5) learn to be more confident when preparing for live auditions and submitting self-tape auditions; (6) learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); (7) learn voice and speech tips to prepare for "slates" and "sides"; and (8) learn easy movements to be an expressive performer. RECREATIONAL: In general, the student often chooses the songs to sing at each lesson, and I provide singing tips for the student to apply to the songs. We will: (1) build a repertoire of favorite songs that the student chooses and songs that I may recommend; (2) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing, including the eyes; (3) learn some basic musicianship skills; and (4) learn some easy performance skills. No prior experience is necessary -- just a curiosity for trying new things, a willingness to make mistakes, and a love for singing. FOR YOUNG CHILDREN (AGES 8-10): In general, we will spend most of the time building repertoire and learning songs that student enjoys singing. As children can differ widely in their physical and mental development, and even on a day-to-day basis, I will adjust the lessons accordingly to be more musicianship-based, technique-based or performance-based depending on the student's personality and student's goals. We will learn primarily through imitation and repetition. As children tend to enjoy repetition, we may spend several lessons on the same song, which I will use to build: (1) thinker skills (e.g., rhythm, solfege, pitch matching, sight reading), (2) doer skills (e.g., muscle coordination involving breath, articulation, and range), and (3) feeler skills (e.g., expressive movements, style, groove). We will combine these skills to develop connection with an audience and to build confidence when performing. ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: For online lessons, it is helpful to have a second device to play accompaniment tracks. For professional students, please be prepared to purchase digital sheet music from Musicnotes or Sheetmusicdirect. Some helpful accompaniment resources are PianoTrax, and The Accompanist.
