I am a vocal coach and troubleshooter with 25+ years of experience as a private voice teacher, audition coach, music director, and piano accompanist. I enjoy providing practical, affordable and tailored lessons to aspiring athletes and artists pursuing their dreams to belt out on Broadway, let loose with karaoke, or rock out with a local band.
I really enjoy troubleshooting difficult songs and helping my students who are passionately committed to their goals but who have limited time and finances for a more traditional curriculum. I welcome students who find it more difficult to learn with exercises and scales, and I welcome students who need more flexibility with their scheduling.
My main expertise is coaching professional dancers, singers, and actors to:
(1) sing a variety of styles (especially pop/rock),
(2) build a brand-specific audition book,
(3) develop a strong and flexible speaking voice,
(4) prepare sides and monologues for callbacks, and
(5) explore a storyteller mindset.
Although I work primarily with young professionals, I also enjoy serving recreational learners whose musical dreams may simply be to:
(1) learn a new song,
(2) sing karaoke with friends, or
(3) jam out alone with YouTube.
For both recreational and professional learners, I hope to instill a love and joy of singing and acting without the pressure of grades, perfection, and judges.
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers' Association), NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Voice Foundation, VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association)
PHILOSOPHY: Practical troubleshooting is the main driving force behind my lessons. As a coach, I often meditate on the following questions:
(1) How do we make sounds and communicate with speech and song?
(2) How do we convert 2D symbols (text) into a 3D body (performer) and create a 4D emotional experience (audience)?
(3) How do we use these skills to live more freely, intentionally, and expressively?
I hope to instill an appreciation for and a desire to answer these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the students that I meet will continually learn to be useful artists.
My main goal as a teacher is to share my knowledge and experience in a personalized way so that my students no longer need me to reach their goals, that they are able to teach themselves, and that, ultimately, they become fellow collaborators and troubleshooters.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FOR CHILDREN/TEENS (Age 8-18):
(1) ONE-TIME INTRO TO SINGING, VOCAL COACHING, OR AUDITION PREP (Age 6-18 ~60min $35): In this private one-time introductory class for learners who love to sing, we will learn an overview of singing, learn some easy singing tips, and perform a partial song.
This is a one-time private class that can be used as an introduction to singing for new students. I will:
(1) go over some mindsets about learning to sing;
(2) give a quick overview of the basic concepts I use to structure my lessons;
(3) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing;
(4) listen to a song cut chosen by the learner (please let me know the name of the song prior to the class);
(5) apply a singing tip to the song cut; and
(6) give general assessment and answer any questions regarding the lesson and learner's goals.
This class can also be a consultation to help new students choose which type of class to enroll in (shy, recreational, pro).
For recreational students ("So You Can Sing"), the learners usually choose the songs they want to sing each week, and I provide singing tips for them to apply to their songs. In general, the recreational singers that I teach listen to a lot of songs, and they really enjoy singing with karaoke tracks or with the recording artists.
For shy students ("So You Think You Can't Sing"), I first assess whether the student needs extra help with skills to gain confidence or if the student wants a more private space to learn and perform. The learners usually choose the songs they want to sing, and I provide singing tips for them to apply to their songs. I will usually spend a little more time on technique with shy students.
For pro students ("So You Think You Can Sing"), both learners and I choose songs, and the students learn more technique and performance skills. We will learn to sight read various audition cuts and learn how to sing various singing styles (music theatre, pop, rock, country, jazz, classical/legit). We will also develop the speaking voice and practice auditioning and performing skills.
(2) SO YOU CAN SING or SO YOU THINK YOU CAN'T SING - Private Voice Lessons (Age 8-18) ($35/30 min): In this private one-on-one class for learners who love to sing and think they can sing or think they can't sing, we will learn new mindsets about singing, practice and apply some easy singing tips to a song cut, and perform a partial song. We will:
(1) learn some new mindsets about singing;
(2) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing, including the eyes;
(3) learn some basic musicianship skills;
(4) learn some easy ways to connect with ourselves and others through movement; and
(5) learn a variety of songs chosen primarily by the learner.
In general, we will spend most of the time on repertoire, and we will learn primarily through demonstration, application, and practice. All conceptual learning (rhythm, solfege, pitch matching, sight reading, expressive movements, etc.) will be applied to a song. As children in the 8-13 age group can differ widely in their physical and mental development, I will adjust the classes accordingly to be more exercise-based or performance-based depending on the learner's personality and learner's goals.
Before each class, please let me know what song(s) you would like to sing, and please have a second device to play accompaniment tracks.
Please note that, in my experience, the 8-11 year-old learners who seem to thrive in this weekly ongoing class are children who love to sing all day long and seem to never have a shortage of songs that they are listening to or wanting to learn. Since this is primarily a recreational class, if the child does not have a clear goal of wanting to perfect old songs or learn new songs each week, they will most likely get bored with lessons, which is very normal and not indicative of singing ability. They will most likely thrive instead in a social group class or performance class, choir, or school/community musical. If you are unsure about enrolling in weekly lessons, please consider a one-time lesson or consultation (request a time that works for you). Another option is to try weekly lessons for about 4 weeks and then take intermittent lessons until your child is older and ready for more formal or professional training.
(3) SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SING - Private Voice Lessons (Age 12-18) ($50/45 min): In this one-on-one class for learners who love to sing, we will build a repertoire of songs while learning a variety of singing and performing tips.
This is a class primarily structured for growth mindset learners who love to sing and who are willing to challenge themselves, make mistakes, troubleshoot difficulties, and build connections. This class is also structured to introduce learners to the mindset and habits of professional performing artists. No prior experience is necessary, but a desire to sing lots of songs and a willingness to learn and grow is ideal for a commitment to weekly ongoing lessons. If you are not sure if this class is right for you, please consider enrolling in a one-time class or consultation prior to enrolling in a subscription:
This class will primarily be repertoire-based. We will learn a variety of songs that learners want to sing and songs that I believe will help learners be better prepared for a future in the performing arts. We will also learn real audition cuts and build an audition book. Sometimes I will provide the sheet music or learners will need to purchase sheet music from Musicnotes (~$6.00). Throughout the ongoing classes, learners will also:
(1) learn some new mindsets about what it means to be a performer and storyteller;
(2) learn the actual pitches and rhythms of a variety of audition cuts of pop/rock and musical theatre songs;
(3) learn singing tips to build performance confidence;
(4) learn some easy ways to connect with themselves and with an audience;
(5) learn how to self-tape for auditions;
(6) learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA);
(7) learn voice and speech tips to prepare for "slates" and "sides"; and
(8) learn easy movements to be an expressive performer.
Practical troubleshooting will be the main driving force behind this class. As a coach, I often meditate on the following questions: (1) How do we make sounds and communicate with speech and song? (2) How do we convert 2D symbols (text) into a 3D body (performer) and create a 4D emotional experience (audience)? (3) How do we use these skills to live more freely, intentionally, and expressively? I hope to instill a beginner's appreciation for and a desire to start answering these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the learners of this class will continually learn to be useful artists.
(4) SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SING - Voice Lessons for Broadway Bound Performers (Age 14-18) ($60/60 min): In this private class for learners who are willing to challenge themselves, we will build a repertoire of music theatre and pop/rock songs, learn performance and audition tips, and practice the singing skills of a Broadway performer.
This is a class primarily structured for learners who are interested in the growth mindset and habits of professional performing artists and who are curious about what it's like to pursue a career on Broadway. This is also a class for learners who simply love to sing and who are willing to challenge themselves, make mistakes, troubleshoot difficulties, and build connections. No prior experience is necessary, but a desire to sing a variety of songs and a willingness to learn and grow is ideal for a commitment to weekly ongoing lessons. If you are not sure if this class is right for you, please consider enrolling in a one-time class or consultation prior to enrolling in a subscription.
In this class, both student and I will choose songs. We will learn various singing styles (music theatre, pop, rock, country, jazz, classical/legit) and build a standard Broadway audition book. We will also develop the speaking voice and practice auditioning and performing skills. Sometimes I will provide the sheet music or learners will need to purchase sheet music from Musicnotes (~$6.00). Throughout the ongoing classes, students will learn:
(1) growth mindsets of professional performers and storytellers;
