My kitchen sink drain was blocked solid, sink was full of dirty water... and it was Saturday. I found Thumbtack - never used it before. Entered my problem and Jason was one of four responders and his quote seemed to be great value for a Saturday and I was somewhat sceptical (shouldn't have been!) He had 5 stars and plenty of reviews so I replied to his message and he immediately replied and was at my home within an hour. The blockage was really difficult to shift... in the middle of a very long horizontal drainpipe run. Jason went at it from the sink end, then from the inspection plug end, he used snakes, longer snakes, vacuum, blower... lots of tricks from his obvious experience. He just would not give up! And he is so professional and such a pleasant, respectful and kind person. This job took Jason over two and a half hours and I was fully expecting his price to go up a bit. At one point, about 2 hours in, Jason made it clear that if he didn't fix it, there would be no charge, no call out fee. But he did fix it and when done, Jason charged the originally quoted price and cleaned up with great diligence. I really can't say enough about Jason's character, personality, professionalism and natural understanding of how to provide excellent customer service. My best experience EVER with a service provider of any type at my house. Thank you Jason!!

Joseph's company assembled an ikea dresser that I previously had paid to have assembled through Ikea and they did a terrible job. Within months my dresser was falling apart. Unlike most companies, Joseph did not give me a window of time that my repair would happen rather he let me choose an exact time it would be assembled! His staff showed up on time called me when he arrived and went above and beyond. I had my dresser assembled early in the morning and there were several people sleeping in my apartment and he consistently apologized for how loud it was when he wasn't being loud at all! Joseph called me while my dresser was being assembled to make sure everything was going well. Most importantly, Joseph offered me the best rate out of anyone I called! The entire assembly took about an hour and other companies were trying to charge me $150! Overall, I am more than satisfied with my experience and will definitely be using him again!

The repairman arrived on-time for his appointment and spent an additional day at my home to ensure the faucet replacement was done correctly and to ensure there was no additional leakage (not a drop!) of unused water wasted. As this repairman's work was such good quality and with good care, as well as fairly priced, I contracted his services for some additional odd jobs around my home, which included touch-up painting, automatic garage door repair, kitchen cabinet repairs and installation of lighting fixtures (minor electrical work).

I hired Mike to service two A/C units. He showed up for both appointments on the time we scheduled. One of the units needed parts ordered. He gave me a reasonable quote and a estimated time for the repair. The repair was done on the date that he estimated. His work was neat and clean. Both units are working great! Yes I would call his company for all my HVAC needs.

Needed my dryer repaired. A true model of excellence when it came to customer service! He was efficient, kept me informed with the ordered part (via text which I appreciate more than voice mail and phone tag.) Then called to say the part had arrived earlier and offered to come the next day for the repair ( a week sooner than expected!) Top quality service and great price. Officially my go to for any of my future needs!

They were incredibly responsive and punctual. We thought we had a “dead” refrigerator on our hands, but P&T correctly diagnosed the problem and saved us the hassle of replacing our refrigerator. They understood the urgency of our situation and squeezed us in their busy schedule to complete the diagnostic and job over two days and roughly 4 hours. I might add they also did a thorough job of cleaning up after the repair, I think everyone knows how dirty the area underneath and behind your refridgerator can get over time. I would highly recommend them!

P&T guys were great! We have had the same problem with our fridge before and this was night and day difference from other repair people. Eugene from P&T ordered parts to complete the repair without upselling or overcharging me, he followed up after the first visit within days. They were very thorough and didn't rush and explained exactly what was wrong and what they were doing. The guys were easy to communicate with, and set up a same day appointment (both times), arrived right on time, cleaned up after finishing and charged a reasonable rate. I will gladly call them again and recommend them to friends.

Don was very extremely professional and responded to me in 15 minutes. I called on a Saturday morning and he had a full schedule for the day with no availability until Monday. I was in dire need of either a repair or new washer and explained my situation. This gentleman started his day an hour earlier so he could come to my home first. His price was $50.00 or less cheaper than the other quotes I received and the fee would have been waived if he was able to repair the machine. His honesty was much appreciated, I was told it was not worth fixing. Don was very thorough in explaining the problem and the price of the parts and labor to fix my appliance. I highly recommend this company if you ever need an appliance repair. I was totally comfortable with his knowledge and professionalism and will be recommending his company to friends and family and would NOT HESITATE to call him for any other repairs on appliances that may arise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
