Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Rob did an excellent job on short notice as videographer for a corporate event. He was very thorough in pre-planning, execution at the event, and delivered footage quickly, which we greatly appreciated as it helps keep our audience that could not attend this in-person event engaged.

Tymel was incredible-- his immense passion for film matched his organizational skills. Even with schedule changes, deadlines, and changing circumstances, Tymal navigated this project with the utmost professionalism. His skill as a videographer and video editor is unparalleled-- but beyond that, without his hard work, my vision for this project would have never been fulfilled. I would not hesitate to hire him again.

Franciska is an excellent communicator and professional videographer. She makes sure every little details before, during and after the filming. Those details make the filming process very smoothly. She also follows the direction and standards for our project and the final videos look very great. After the filming, she immediately uploaded the videos and gave quick update of the filming. She is also very flexible for the time and payment. I highly recommend her if you want to have a pleasant experience for your video project!

Neil Blake filmed my daughter's baby shower at 59th Street & Madison Avenue, New York, NY. He was extremely personable, friendly, and outgoing! While it is customary for many videographers to ask guests to say a few words, Neil asked the guests pointed questions which made the guests very relaxed about answering. He was constantly moving around and capturing soooo many special memories from that extremely special day! I would definitely recommend him and hire him again!

We had a 2 hour fireside chat event which Bill helped to capture. He came in the day before to scope the venue and ensure we would get the right setup (we appreciated his initiative and desire to deliver a quality product, which he did). He provided a variety of options/pricing which was very helpful to us as first time users of a videographer. He was easy to get in touch with as well. Overall I'd recommend Bill for folks looking to have their events captured!

I'm glad I hired Joey to video my surprise engagement proposal in Central Park (at the Wagner Cove gazebo) on March 24, 2016. Joey took the time to survey the gazebo and identify how many cameras he'd need to capture the proposal perfectly. He was also collaborative and was willing to listen to my suggestions. The final, edited video was simply spectacular; every angle was beautifully captured and the sound quality was on point. Joey is a fantastic videographer, and I would highly recommend him to anyone who'd like to capture a moment on video perfectly; he doesn't disappoint!

We hired Leibman Productions for our daughter's Bat Mitzvah. We were looking for a reliable and creative videographer who would capture the moments most important to us. Andrew covered the event from start to finish and also provided a comprehensive highlight video. The video work was professionally shot and recorded along with music, speeches and voice overs. We also needed a music montage of photos and video created close and they helped us tremendously at the last minute. Thank you Leibman Productions, we appreciate all your time and efforts with this very special family occasion.

Andrew was an absolute pleasure to work with. He is a consummate professional - always quick to respond, and always eager to meet your needs both artistically and practically. He filmed the music video for an original song of mine and the footage turned out fantastic. He has a director's eye and a very steady hand. He is tasteful and has a great knack for attention to detail. Everyone has commented on how beautiful the footage looks. I recommend Andrew without hesitation to anyone looking for a professional (and very reasonably priced) videographer to help them bring their creative and artistic visions to life. I would definitely work with Andrew again! Thank you Andrew :)

I had the great pleasure of hiring Andy for an event in August 2015. Our start-up was hosting a panel and roundtable lunch with about 80 attendees in Manhattan. At the last minute (just a few days prior to the event), our CEO requested we professionally film the entire panel discussion to reuse in future marketing. I found Andy via Thumbtack, and he was quick to respond and give me the entire rundown of what he could do for us. He was also kind enough to work with us on budget--filming only the essentials and doing very light editing. On the day of the event, Andy arrived promptly with all his equipment at the venue, got set-up, and started rolling without any trouble. We saw the rough cut in just a matter of days--and he was fast in getting us the edited materials, as well. The video itself was of terrific quality and captured exactly what we hoped for (Andy has done plenty of panel and professional events previously, so he knew exactly what to capture and frame). I look forward to working with Andy again (in fact, we're already setting-up our next event with him as the videographer). I can't forget to mention he's a nice guy--which made the entire experience of working with him even better!

We paid $750 for photos, and a video of our 3-hour event, one copy lightly edited and second cut into a 2-3 minute highlights video. First, the photographer only sent 30 photos and it wasn't until I pressed him that he sent an additional 23. He then blamed my boss for not having more, even though he didn't send me everything he had to begin with. Next, the videos were sent via links that would not work easily for download. Once we sorted that, I see that the videographer did not use any type of tri-pod or stablizer while filming and most of it is slightly shakey. Then I realize she cut it to 90 minutes of the 3 hours, so I had to ask that they also send the full 3 hours. I had asked for very light editing, not for half of the event to be cut. They then said they would send the 3 hours in the mail. What arrived was not a memory stick but a memory card, which while I understand is higher quality, but they were extremely rude, both of them, lecturing me for complaining that we didn't receive a format we could easily pull the data from in our office. They might be nice people if you are happy with their work, but there were a thousands small problems, not the least of which the shakey video, and the rudeness. They also said they are very busy. Perhaps if they were less busy they would pay more attention to quality and customer service. I don't normally write negative reviews but after the last email I received, perspective clients should know. While I was not there when they filmed, my boss expressed afterward that he was concerned about their quality level. I had reviewed their website and reviews in advance before booking them, and the experience was prompt and courteous, but everything after was troublesome. Addendum: Hans continues to mischaracterize and exaggerate the events that occurred with his service to cast himself in a positive light. He has never been cooperative, apologetic, and he made this a very complicated experience for no reason. Per standard procedure with our business we pay for services upon receipt. When it became clear he was not going to give us our video until we paid him, we got accounting to process payment. Given that he had extra time between when the event ended and payment was received, it was logical that the product should have been ready in this extra time, however, it was not. He again blamed the customer for this. It has been three weeks since the event and we are still working on getting final product to our system as they have been going back and forth with us for two weeks re: photos, videos, format, etc. Awful. Beware.
