There is not really enough that I could say about Tim and his crew. We were about to lose a beautiful tree in our backyard. Tim found a way, miraculously, to trim, carve, shimmy, sculpt this tree into great shape. It looks wonderful now, after years of neglect. Tim and his crew went way over and beyond, climbing, sawing, hauling, doing nothing short of acrobatics to save our tree! We are ready to plan out a way to save our deck and Tim came up with some fantastic ideas for that job as well. His pricing is more than fair, communication was superb, work ethic and pride, right on target. He will be returning in the next few weeks to tackle the deck job! I hope!

Top notch in customer service, creativity and quality Rock Hard Fence provides one of the best contractor experiences we’ve ever enjoyed. Within minutes of placing our project on the internet, owner Eric Kolpack responded. Within a week, we had met with him and a plan was created composed of many of his professional suggestions and creative solutions. The project involved a 6-foot trellis topped fence, two gates – one trellis and one to house the air conditioners and a panel to place between garages. Each time we contacted Eric, he responded within minutes. And, he was always on time. The crew, brother Adam and their friend Dave, spent three days installing the fence and gates. They knew what they were doing and approached each step of the project with expertise and teamwork. The fence was installed board by board (no panels). In addition to the fence, we also wanted some creative items: an arbor over the main gate and cat perches in the crabapple tree. Enter Adam who has his own company, ABK Custom Exteriors. By fall, he will come on site and design and build these two items. Adam also preps and stains fences and will provide us with this service as well when the wood is ready. And we must mention Dave Amoia, a contractor in his own right, whose problem-solving abilities and wry humor totally compliment the brothers Kolpack.

Cayuga Landscaping did a great job. I had them cut down some dead trees in my backyard that were hanging over my house. They were quick, clean, and did a excellent job. I would recommend them to anyone that needs any landscaping done.

Stop reading reviews - You've found your new favorite forever construction company. Craig and his crew COULD NOT have been more responsive, polite, thoughtful, hard-working, or considerate (and handsome to boot!). We're renovating our backyard this summer, and fell in love with the idea of a horizontal fence. We interviewed handfuls of companies, and every single one was hard to schedule and disgruntled. Enter Craig. He arrived super punctually, listened carefully to everything we were looking for, took time to ask us questions, and returned a comprehensive quote--that clearly outlined all of the costs and his thinking--to us promptly. It was easy to schedule a time for the build, and he showed up right on time. Within a day, all of the posts were up, and the next day the fence was finished. He followed up asking if we had any questions, or comments, and we talked through tiny details, which he came back and perfected immediately. We've already hired him to deliver and grade the soil for the new backyard, and we're brainstorming the project after that. The only thing I'm sad about is that he and his crew never let us buy them lunch or give them refreshments while they worked. Go with CNG!! You will not be disappointed.

This crew had a huge job to do for me. We installed an in-ground pool this summer and needed our entire backyard re-graded and sod installed. We also needed to repair some damage to our neighbor's lawn from the construction crews accessing our backyard. They did a great job! More than 2 weeks out, the sod looks amazing. They also planted a small butterfly/hummingbird garden for me that looks great. Thom and his crew were polite, kind, listened to what I wanted, and delivered on their promises. I would recommend them to anyone.

When Tony came to give me an estimate originally he was extremely easy to deal with and very pleasant. He was honest and answered all the questions I asked. He asked me what I wanted in my garden and I told him as such and he replied in few days with a drawn up sketch of my garden. Along with that he had a picture image which he did note wasn't a very "too scale" picture. The drawing was on grid and to scale. He was quick to do the work. I will be looking forward to him doing the small area I have around porch in backyard.

After having a new patio and fence installed in my backyard last summer, I hired Mr. Clark from T. C. Powerwash & Surface Cleaning to stain the fence. I found him to be fair, dependable, and a pleasure to deal with. He explained about the various types of stains and brought a color chart to my home, saving me a trip to the paint store to pick a color. He started the job when he said he would, was here every day until it was completed, and did a good job communicating with me as the job progressed. I especially appreciated the care he took covering my neighbors homes as well as my own to protect them from any overspray, and that he painted a number of hard-to-reach areas by hand to ensure coverage. I then hired Mr. Clark to re-grade and sod my yard which was full of weeds, ruts and piles of dirt from the patio and fence installations. I very much appreciated that he squeezed this job in so I did not have to deal with a muddy mess through the fall and winter and so the sod could take root before winter. Again, his price was fair, he was dependable and he did a great job. My yard got a great make-over and I can't wait to enjoy it this summer! I would not hesitate to recommend this company to my friends and family.

This is the third project Peter has done for us. This time we wanted to re-do the side area around our patio to match what he did in front of the house. This included removing some large overgrown bushes, installing a 42" wall along the edge of the patio, and all new plantings. The design Peter came up with was just what we wanted, and the finished product was perfect. There was one minor "clean up" issue, but It was handled to my complete satisfaction. Peter is a very nice guy, and very easy to work with. Would recommend him for any of your landscape needs.

We had our first floor renovated with new ceilings and drywall, in addition to replacement windows and doors. Josh is probably one of the hardest workers we have ever hired into our home. He was accommodating in scheduling and put in long hours to ensure that the completion of our project was done in a timely manner. As he left our home each day, he was conscious about cleaning up so that our living was as uninterrupted as possible. As our project completion approached, Josh sought our feedback on every aspect of the project and returned several times to ensure that everything was completed to our satisfaction. Additionally, we appreciated his suggestions as we planned and fine tuned our project. He was able to provide insight into the design and finishes that enhanced the finished look of it. We highly recommend Josh's company and will definitely be seeking his service as future projects arise.

Danyar has been helping me with landscaping jobs for the past few years. I have many trees and bushes around my home and he has helped keep them healthy and looking great. I also transformed a large section of my backyard into a garden and Danyar hasspent countless hours hauling dirt, compost, and mulch to get everything in its proper place. I highly recommend this young man for any task.

KB Landscape & Design is operated by Krista and Kyle, a husband-and-wife team. We have been in business, working hard since March of 2007. Our typical projects that we handle include maintaining residential and commercial properties with spring and fall cleanups, lawn maintenance, trimming and pruning, some wall and stonework, plus new landscape designs. We also install sod anywhere, from entire yards to small fixes. We have come across many backyards that have not been maintained in many years. We bring them back to a beautiful and manageable state. Being landscapers is more about our desire and enjoyment to work with each other, plants, dirt, mulch and in the great outdoors. Together, we have a good eye for design, functionality and easy maintenance for down the road. KB Landscape & Design thrives and grows every year, mostly from referrals. That is the best compliment our customers can give us, and we thank them. For every referral, we always give a little kick back to our customer just to say thanks!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
