We had a clogged drain in the kitchen. The kitchen is in the process of remodeling, so the sink was not there and no water to flush down the drain. I communicated with Jason via text messaging, sending him pictures and voicing my concerns. He answered all my questions very patiently even before arriving for the job. At the job, he was very professional and careful. He cleaned the drain, used the camera to check it, and cleaned up after he was done. He said that he warranties his work and we can call him back if anything goes wrong after the sink is installed. (The sink has not been installed yet, as of today.) We are very satisfied with his service and will be calling him again for future projects.

The Tech from Service Guys arrived at our home early on a Saturday morning, just as we had requested. He explained how he would make the repairs and got to work right away. We were disappointed with the resealing of a sink drain. The finished project looked sloppy and messy. We could have done that ourselves, but we hired a professional thinking he would do a better job than us. The other projects (fixing a broken kitchen drawer, installing a drawer pull, and hanging two kitchen shelves) were done quickly and to our satisfaction. We only wish the resealed drain was cleaner, but otherwise we are glad we hired the Service Guys.

Jonathan just finished installing an IKEA kitchen for me. New base cabinet, wall cabinets, a built in microwave, and countertop. He had to work with difficult sloping walls (brick and terrible dry wall) and it looks fantastic. He even added a backboard to the counter when we asked. Jonathan replied to all my texts and emails quickly. He was very professional and skilled.

Walter is only "One Call Away". He is very friendly and helpful! He helped with our bathroom mirror hanging and kitchen countertop refreshment. He was even willing to come multiple times to get the job done and made adjustments to meet our expectations. We saved his contact and will def keep him in mind when we have new needs!

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

Greivin is our new go-to handy man. We hired him after a mediocre experience with a different service. We realized we'd rather pay a little more for a much better finished product. That was a good decision! Greivin came to our apartment one day after I reached out. He recaulked our kitchen counters and removed a wall heater that then needed patching and painting. He is quick, meticulous and professional. We saved his cell phone number and plan to call him again the second a new project comes up. His service and finished product are worth every penny! Hire him!

Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

Konstantinos and his assistant sanded and painted our kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They also installed two backsplash glass panels and painted the cabinet beneath our kitchen sink. They were very flexible about scheduling the job and accommodated several requests we made to postpone. They completed the job on schedule and on budget, were very neat, professional, and courteous. We trusted them in our home. They responded to messages promptly and helped us to figure out how to accomplish what we wanted done. We would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

First home, first major project (totaled kitchen & total bath remodel) how exciting and scary is that! Hired Brian and Harry to do the work, not because they were the cheaper quote (they weren't), but because they had the experience, integrity and work ethic that I hold dear. They responded to my emails, texts, and photos when i was tearing down my kitchen wall and ceiling. Came to my home to see what these unknown factors I was discovering (think headaches.) Brought in their Electrician and Plumber to take a look, even before they were hired. Brian came to a Condo Assoc meeting to answer questions and reassure my neighbors of the upcoming remodel. This was not an easy remodel (are they ever?), but we stopped, consulted, evaluated the options and moved forward with each issue and there were a number of them. Many things I was sure of what I wanted, but there were a number of items i was unsure of. I felt comfortable consulting with B & H on choices I had to make, tapping into their experience/history with other projects. Very happy with my new kitchen and bath. Would hire them again and again.

Rome was exceptionally reasonable with his pricing compared to other quotes we received, and he started at our soonest convenience. His talented crew were a pleasure to have in our home as they tackled several projects we were working on. We had Rome renovate our kitchen, wallpaper and paint our dining room, paint and renovate cabinets in our billiard room, and paint several other rooms in our home, they replaced several wood planks on our pergola and on the deck and steps that were unsafe and his wood worker went above and beyond with his amazing skills to go the extra mile with several things on the deck that needed changing or that that needed a face lift. They power washed our home and made it look new and replaced several odds and ends that had just been needing a new look. He was always willing to work around our busy schedules and eager to please. He is a very kind, pleasant presence which we appreciated as we were working with him and his crew for several weeks. They were always on time and clear about what they were doing and what they needed in order for us to prepare for different projects. We had our kitchen counters removed and a family member was going to be inheriting them, and he was even kind enough to take his time and his crews time to help transport them to the new owners vehicle which was greatly appreciated and much needed. I would go on and on about how Rome and his crew were a pleasure to work with but i dont want to fail to mention what a wonderful person he actually is and how he truly cares if you are happy with the outcome of things and the progress as well. Rome is a one of a kind find when it comes to anything having to do with your home and he will respect your home and things in it more then i have ever witnessed with any other company. He is a great man of his word and was a great find on this sight!!! We will always call Rome in the furure for anything relating to home improvement. If youre lucky enough to find him youre lucky enough!! Hopefully Rome gets to see this review so he knows how very thankful we are that we found him and were blessed enough to have him make our home everything we wanted and more!! Rome and his professional, caring crew are one of a kind, skilled and professional!!!!

Glenn expertly assembled a kitchen island and is working to troubleshoot some issues with how the island was engineered (through no fault of his) and has offered good solutions to the problem. He will come back to rectify and improve the deficiencies inherent in the design.

(This message originally sent directly to Home Geeks): Dear Vince: I want to take this opportunity to compliment your wonderful crew on two jobs very well done. I really can't say enough good things about Denis Esposito and his partner, Mike (whose last name, regrettably, I didn't get). The interior work they did on my basement and kitchen, as well as the exterior work above my bay window all turned out beautifully. Their hard work (under some brutal weather conditions), attention to detail, and dedication to quality was nothing short of exceptional. I've never seen any workmen go so far above and beyond the call of duty as they did (particularly Denis). I hope you'll pass my thanks to Denis and Mike for their outstanding efforts. The repairs to my home that they completed far exceed "satisfactory." On that basis, I'd have no reservations in contacting Home Geeks for any future work to be done, or in recommending the company to anyone needing a high-quality contractor. Sincerely, Rick

Working with Bharti is like exploring your own sense of aestheticism. She is not only the most comfortable interior designer to work with, but a beautiful person at heart to know. She gives out wonderful ideas to make your house appealing to all your senses including your soul. When I moved into my new house, it was overwhelming for me to initiate the process of setting it up. Bharti was my soul saver who came with excellent ideas and helped me fill up my house with class and comfort. Working with her was a joyful journey as her patience and calmness helped my cluttered thoughts come out seamless. I highly recommend working with her, she is the best designer.

I hired We Show Up Construction llc for a kitchen renovation. Prior to that, I had already purchased my cabinets from Ikea. Rich and his crew handled the demolition of my old kitchen, the assembling of the cabinets, installed new flooring, hung the cabinets, and added a backsplash. Throughout this whole process there were some hiccups along the way. However, there was no problem that came up that Rich and his crew did not have a solution for. Overall, I am very happy with my new kitchen and I would hire We Show Up Construction for future home projects.

I needed someone to build my kitchen cabinets. At first I was spectacle but after meeting him in person and watching him work I was relive. It was done faster than I imagine and he told me the charge upfront and it was final which most definitely was a plus. Over all I'm satisfied with the job and would use him againg for my next home project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
