Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

Eric really knows his stuff! Best thing about him is that he does plumbing and electrical work ... for a fraction of the cost of those so-called “specialists.” He fixed a leaky shower head, by replacing the cartridge. He replaced a defective refrigerator water & ice line. And he repaired and replaced an outdoor spigot, including a new pipe and valves that required him to drill & repair an interior basement wall. He was thorough, he picked up all of the necessary materials, and charged me at his cost. A total professional. He will return soon, to complete a few other projects for me.

Frank is great. I connected with him on facebook, called and spoke with him immediately. He came to give me a price on a few jobs in my house and was very professional, friendly, and very reasonable with prices. He did a great job installing a washer hookup in my basement and fixing the plumbing in my bathroom. I'd recommend him and use him again.

Kenny knows his stuff and makes that clear by explaining every step and all aspects of the project. You will if you have him out for a quote that he shoots it straight and knows his stuff more then most. I had 5 different places come out for a quote and one was so bad they never even came in the front door but still were able to give me a quote. Then another one my two dogs were stand offish with and then Kenny walks in and one dog is jumping into his arms and the other one is head butting his legs so he will pet her. I've learned over the years you can tell a lot by someone by how your dogs interact with them and vice versa. So needless to say I highly recommend you have them out to your house for any cooling heating plumbing you wont be disappointed.

Excellent service to fix a leaky toilet in an emergency......while my parents were out of town on vacation, I stopped at their house to make sure it was ok, and noticed water dripping from the ceiling. The second floor toilet was leaking. Botticelli Plumbing came to my rescue! They were incredibly professional and prompt. I highly recommend them.

Carlos was great. In the end, the leak I had was not plumbing related, but he helped me trace it to the source - a gap in the window frame of the shower. He did not charge me to diagnose the issue. I'm lucky I didn't plumbing work this time, but when I do, Carlos will be my first call.

Frank was extremely responsive, getting back to me within hours of my request. We texted back and forth to clarify my request and arrange his visit. He arrived within minutes of the appointed time, listened to me as I showed him what I wanted, worked efficiently, and explained clearly what was wrong and what needed to be done. He then set about the work. He, kindly, tried to get me parts that were more affordable, but I insisted on the more expensive parts as I preferred metal to plastic. In the end, the metal parts were unavailable at this time, so he did an excellent job with what we had to work with. While he came to do a single job, he ended up doing two other small plumbing-related things that had been aggravating us. Frank agreed to come back whenever I needed any other plumbing work and said if I happened on the metal parts I wanted, that he would be happy to install them. His price was very reasonable and he matched his quote. I feel I got my money's worth. He was respectful and quiet. I would definitely hire Frank again.

Late this afternoon, I posted a request for a plumber to fix my gas-fired water heater. I had tried but failed to fix it myself. Within an hour of posting my request, Mr. Karras contacted me. Instead of simply coming out to my house, Mr. Karras talked me through the repair myself. He told me how to wrestle the cover plate off the pilot light and burner assembly and then talked me through the fussy procedure and tricky timing for manually lighting the pilot light with a gas grill ignitor. Woo hoo! Hot water again! Mr. Karras is a saint! Saved us hundreds of dollars for the excellent value of an after-hours repair visit with labor. I asked how I could pay him for his phone consultation, but he refused any payment and wished me a good evening! Moreover, he is patient, well spoken and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend him to anyone needing plumbing or heating services. Great man!

I highly recommend Francois to anyone reading this. I've been a customer of his for several years now, and In that time, he's assisted me with: new flooring, ceiling renovations, furniture fabrication and installation, plumbing, electrical work, painting, wall and ceiling repair, and appliance repair / replacement. I hired Mr. Newman based on recommendations from friends, but I continued to use him because I have yet to meet a handyman / contractor who is as consistently responsive, honest, and fairly priced as he is. Work was completed as quoted and on budget, something that has been very hard to find in my experience. If you want quality work, at a good price, without playing phone tag for days; look no further!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
