Helio did a bunch of odd jobs around my house, including: painting my porch, fixing and painting the railings on my porch and my indoor staircase, installing a new basement window, cleaning out the gutters, installing blinds, and installing a new handle on my sliding glass door. I was especially pleased that he was able to find two matching spindles for my indoor staircase (kids broke through the old ones.) The railing looks great. I found Mr. Guzman to be efficient and knowledgeable and very trustworthy, and I highly recommend his services.

I had Jeff come out to my home to provide me with an estimate for a full bathroom installation in my basement. He was incredibly detailed and took over an hour and half of his time to listen to my needs, perform measurements and explain different facets of the project and options available to me. He later emailed me a very detailed estimate. While we ultimately chose to go with a different contractor, I would have felt very comfortable going with Jeff for my project.

Very, very positive experience. Steve was tasked with simply mowing my lawn. However, he did so with great care and skill! He used a lawn patch in an area that had a divet without even being asked to do so. He cleaned up immaculately. He has been easy to work with and I plan to increase the kinds of tasks he can help me with. October,2014- I have rehired "Handy Helpers" for additional work...Painting, window repair and door repair. Great job! Trustworthy, good service, pleasant disposition, cleans up! Will hire in the future. Alice

Got the pleasure of having Nathaniel and Glenn complete my project (Installed french drains inside basement, removed a badly installed pavement surface and replaced with a drainage ditch). He was very punctual, responsive and organize through out the entire process. The work was completed on time and without any crazy surprises. Everything was on paper, explained and verified by me before the project was complete. I recommend and would hire Nathaniel and his team again without hesitation.

I was referred to Scott for gutters by an acquaintance for whom he had done windows. I needed new gutters and requested a quote. Scott was very responsive and replied quickly to set up an appointment. After taking measurements he walked me through his process and product which compared very favorably to other quotes I received. I also needed gutter guards due to issues with birds nesting which he provided including literature to allow me to do additional research. The overall quote he provided was quite competitive especially after he called back to let me know he was able to change suppliers to get the gutter guards at a slightly lower price. That and the consistent high-quality of service provided during negotiations easily won my business. Our original install date was pushed back due to inclement weather but Scott was very timely with letting me know and providing an alternative date on which the work was completed. The new gutters look great and have provided exactly the results for which I was hoping. When it's time for windows, a roof, or other items, Scott's Remodeling will be first on my list!

We need someone for multiple projects that were long overdue. Randy did a great job on the built in upstairs by the window and the mudroom bench, and he exceeded my expectations in the laundry room. However, we originally requested a quote to include the replacement of our fire door and multiple closet doors, and despite much back and forth, these were not done (but for a couple of doors that do not look great downstairs). We spent far more than we planned for projects that remain undone. He never returned to repair the mudroom trim he removed and somehow our radiant floor in the mudroom was damaged during the bench or door installation.

I was looking to have a full bathroom installed in my basement. Bill was one of several contractors who came to look at the project. Bill came to my house at the agreed upon time and took time to listen to my needs. He sent me an estimate a few days later as agreed. While I ultimately chose a different contractor for my project, I would have felt very comfortable to have Bill perform the project.

Over the course of 2 weeks i ripped up all of the carpet on my first floor. Underneath was the original "Rochester Hardwood Flooring" and i wanted to restore it. There were a lot of squeaky spots a couple old pet/urine stains. Tim and Tim Jr provided a very competitive quote, were flexible on scheduling, and provided advice on the flooring, heating vents, and cold air returns. They were both polite and a pleasure to work with. They added shims from the basement ceiling to fix the squeaks and pulled some magic on the stains. All around they made the experience as easy as possible. The job was completed quickly and i can see the pride they have in their work! The end result looks absolutely awesome!! (Dark Walnut Stain with White Baseboard/Shoe-molding) I am recommending them to any friend, family, or co-worker interested in flooring jobs (specifically hardwood floor refinishing).

I hired Don to help install 4 recessed lights and a ceiling fan in our living room. What a pleasure he was to work with. Communication was great, which I've found to be hit or miss with other contractors. He came by for a pre-visit and made sure we were on the same page about what materials were needed and the scope. He was also willing to use the extra materials I had from another project which cut down on what he needed to purchase. He was also the only contractor who suggested a 3 way light switch so we could control both the fan and lights from two spots in the room, which I am very glad we decided to do. There were times he needed an extra set of hands to pull wire and he was willing to just let me help out instead of having to bring in another person which helped keep costs down. I also learned a lot along the way=) In the end the hours estimate he gave me originally was lower than the actual billing but I knew I was doing this for time and materials and added quite a bit more to his plate during the job. He added the 3 way switches which complicated the job quite a bit and also helped with a few other side jobs, fixing a light socket, adding another outlet to our attic since we had the circuits pulled up there anyways, a pull box for future attic electrical, drywall patching that was originally thought would not be needed, helped me pull and route cat 6 cable to the attic taking advantage of the floor boards already being open...etc. He even noticed that our side door handle hardware was loose and took a few seconds to tighten it up for us. Overall Don is very friendly and capable and I would hire him again in a heartbeat. I've already have a new list forming and plan to have him back again in a few weeks to help finish some items we've been putting off for years.

George installed drains and water piping for our basement kitchen and laundry areas. He had to re-route all of the electrical and plumbing to a tankless hot water which he also installed. He completed the project according to the building code for the town. He did everything in a timely manner and within our budget. He was very good about telling us why he was doing things the way he was doing them and advising us so we don’t have any problems in the future. He also built a bathroom, installed a shower, and new toilet in the basement. I think he could do almost any kind of remodeling project and I think he would do a great job. I highly recommend him!

Mr. Caletz's work is top notch. I flew him in from Rochester to PWM and back to help me with a project that called for expertise beyond my capability. My home is in East Harpswell, Maine. I wanted to replace a slider door with a double vented side-lite Atrium entry door, and additionally, took out a daylight basement garage door and replaced it with a double French opening Anderson Exterior door. I estimated his stay at abut a a week. Rey and I finished the job in only four work days. He put in about 10 productive hours a day with me, and we had time to work on laying out a tiling project I wanted to accomplish in my sunroom. When he measures , he always double checks the critical stuff. I've known this gentleman for about 29 years and have worked with him on custom home construction projects on Seekins Dr. in Bath, and at West Chops Point on a 1/2 million dollar new construction project for a retired Navy full bird captain. Rey Caletz's attention to detail and abundant wealth of innovative finish carpentry knowledge sets him apart from others in the industry. That's why I flew him in. And he's a very kind and gentle person to boot. Ask him for an estimate and he will be very fair, and you will find your dollars well spent, as well as a good friend by the time your project is complete.....something lacking in many these days. He tackles every challenge with a love for his craft. Feel free to contact me at my work cell 207.522.5660 between 1000 and 2000 Monday thru Friday, or at a reasonable time on the weekends. Relax and enjoy. Regards, Rick

We needed a handrailing to be installed in order to pass a home inspection. The challenge was that the stairs to the basement did not have a wall to install the railing on. Robb made some suggestions and was punctual in his arrival. I expected the most basic 2X4 installation but instead was incredibly impressed with a customized handrail that had perfect rounded ends and was actually quite stylish. Robb's pricing was incredibly fair and I recommend him to anyone who needs some work done.

Rick Mincer - RAM Construction Rick - assisted by his son Richie - worked on a house we bought while we were on vacation in Florida. The house is a 3 BR Ranch on a village lot w/an attached 2 car garage & covered patio. Built in 1964, the house was purchased "as is" and was in the process of being fixed up after sitting unused for around 10 years and having had a roofing problem that caused some interior damage. We had RAM complete some of the water damage work prior to doing some major remodeling in the MBR & Bath. The bath was totally remodeled with all new fixtures and drywall. The MBR received a new sheetrock ceiling replacing the orig. 12" sq tiles and repairs to the walls before redecorating. The Kitchen was gutted and a complete new Kitchen with all new appliances was competed next. In the process of working on the kitchen, the boiler on the heating system failed and we decided to replace all of that system with a new forced air furnace. RAM worked with Main Plumbing & Heating on that project and also supplied temporary heat by setting up some temp electric heat units in the basement. RAM worked for us for 3 months - while we were in Florida - our input was to visit Lowe's and pick out things we wanted and they picked them up & installed them. We're very pleased with Rick's work and plan to use RAM to remodel the 2nd bathroom and do some more work on trim & prep for getting other areas ready for paint, in the next few weeks.

I called Steve Caudle, owner of Cedar Mills Home Renovations, originally to fix some siding on my garage that was damaged. He came out promptly, gave me a reasonable estimate that we agreed on and, subject to weather conditions, scheduled a time window when he would do the repair. Subsequently, the winter worsened, we got 3 feet of snow, which caused a delay in the siding repair. As the winter began to thaw I experienced major ice damming on the roof over my living room which caused an inside leak and water damage to my drywall. Since this was an emergency situation Steve took on this unscheduled job right away. He literally had to rebuild my entire inside living room wall down to the studs. While this repair was happening I also hired them for some other projects, such as replacing floor tiles, replacing and re-piping a basement sump pump, redoing skylight seals and flashing, and a few other projects. All the work was done at reasonable cost. Once the weather improved Cedar Mills fixed the siding over my garage, which was the original scope of work. To make a long story short, Steve and the Cedar Mills team did an absolutely spectacular job. Completely courteous and professional at all times, and the quality of their workmanship was hands down some of the best I have ever seen from a home remodeling and repair contractor in the Rochester area. Cedar Mills gets the highest possible rating from me. I will definitely hire Steve and his team in the future! If you are looking for a professional, smart, honest, skilled and motivated team for home remodeling in the Rochester, NY area, that is also great value for the cost, Cedar Mills is a great choice. Beryl has done so much work in my home over the years. He has upgraded electrical outlets, removed carpeting, installed floor molding, created a laundry room by moving washer and dryer and all plumbing and electrical connections from basement to former den, installed a new dishwasher, and more. His work is well down, and completed promptly. He knows his craft. I greatly appreciate all that he has done in our home. In fact, his work compelled me to create a "Skills and Trades" page on Facebook, for a group of which Beryl and I are members.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
