Jeff recently completed a bathroom renovation in my lake cottage. The house was built in 1910 and it required Jeff to completely tear out the existing bathroom and do a complete remodel. Jeff did all of the work including the tear out, plumbing, electric, tiling, painting, etc. Jeff focuses on quality and detail which is extremely important especially when doing tile work. He also replaced doors in my home and was able to find solutions to unique door sizes and uneven floors. I would be happy to speak with anyone who is considering hiring Jeff for a project!

Replaced a corner shower on the second floor and then we added the laundry room to be dry walled. Nu Look tiled the shower corner and installed the shower enclosure and base we purchased. They dry walled the laundry room and adjacent rear entry way to the house. It looks good and we are looking forward to painting it ourselves. They also made suggestions to enhance the appearance of the laundry room and which saved us money.

I used Scott's remodeling for both my siding and gutters. Overall I had a great experience in dealing with Scott. Yes... like with any job there were a few "glitches" but Scott quickly took care of them all. He made sure we were completely satisfied. I would use him again if I had to do it all over again.

We hired Barnum Home Pros a few weeks ago to replace paneling with drywall in our Family Room. They did an AMAZING job... Not only was the price good but they were able to start the job shortly after we approved the estimate. They were polite, always on time and kept everything clean. The job was done exactly on time. I will highly recommend Barnum Home Pros to anyone. Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU!!!

We would hire Alexander Enterprises again. Pros: friendly, competent, fairly priced, good quality work, responsive, polite workers. We loved how flexible and friendly they were to work with and the bathroom turned out great. Todd had a great vision for the project and struck a good balance between encouraging us to go along with his vision and ultimately letting us make the decision. His ideas turned out better than what we would have done. Cons: they keep busy on lots of jobs, so they can be a little disorganized or behind schedule as they get everyone there who needs to be there. There wasn't a lot of collaboration/planning on the design process for the details like fixtures, trim, tile so a lot of decisions were last minute, but they were flexible when we took our time making those decisions. We didn't know about all of the changes to the budget until the final invoice. We knew about the big stuff, but there was still probably 10% of the overall cost that was a surprise, so next time I'd ask for all change orders to be finalized before they start working on that item.

Dave and Cheri were very professional. They promptly answered or returned calls and emails, had a written detailed estimate for a reasonable price prepared quickly, and started work soon on my relatively small project. I had him reroute a dryer vent and repair ceiling drywall in two locations and replace a ceiling fan/light fixture, then paint in both locations one of which needed texturing work. In the process, he discovered that the boots on two of my roof vents were deteriorating (thus causing the leak that damaged the ceiling) and replaced both of them for a very reasonable parts and labor price that was not on the original estimate. Dave showed up every day on time (it took multiple days due to the mud coats and painting) and completed the work quickly, yet maintained the highest quality. I would not hesitate to hire him again and have already referred him to my employers for a job that they have had trouble getting estimates for in a timely manner.

Pat installed hardwood floors in our dining room and living room. He removed all the old carpeting, removed the trim, and then reinstalled the trim after the floors were done. He did an excellent job and always cleaned up after a day's work. He also replaced the drywall in the upstairs bathroom ceiling after our roof had leaked. Again, he did an excellent job.

Steve has done multiple home improvements & renovations for us. He efficiently and cost effectively installed a new energy saving furnace & hot water heater which both had energy rebates. Steve suggested options for ceramic tile flooring he installed for us along with ideas and details that gave the project a clean, updated look. Steve is a polite and accomodating professional with experience in many areas of renovation. We would highly recommend him

I would highly recommend Christ! His work was excellent; we have had other tile work done and it doesn't compare to the high craftsmanship Chris displayed. He showed up when he said he would, which is not something we have always experienced with contractors in the past. As an added bonus, he was a delight to work with - very personable. Highly recommend!

Rick Mincer - RAM Construction Rick - assisted by his son Richie - worked on a house we bought while we were on vacation in Florida. The house is a 3 BR Ranch on a village lot w/an attached 2 car garage & covered patio. Built in 1964, the house was purchased "as is" and was in the process of being fixed up after sitting unused for around 10 years and having had a roofing problem that caused some interior damage. We had RAM complete some of the water damage work prior to doing some major remodeling in the MBR & Bath. The bath was totally remodeled with all new fixtures and drywall. The MBR received a new sheetrock ceiling replacing the orig. 12" sq tiles and repairs to the walls before redecorating. The Kitchen was gutted and a complete new Kitchen with all new appliances was competed next. In the process of working on the kitchen, the boiler on the heating system failed and we decided to replace all of that system with a new forced air furnace. RAM worked with Main Plumbing & Heating on that project and also supplied temporary heat by setting up some temp electric heat units in the basement. RAM worked for us for 3 months - while we were in Florida - our input was to visit Lowe's and pick out things we wanted and they picked them up & installed them. We're very pleased with Rick's work and plan to use RAM to remodel the 2nd bathroom and do some more work on trim & prep for getting other areas ready for paint, in the next few weeks.

I recently had Eric come to my house for an install of a living room and to re-sand and refinish my dining room, foyer, kitchen and front stair treads. From start to finish, I couldn't have asked for a more professional and understanding character. He stayed on schedule from start to finish and always kept me in the loop for what was going on. His prices are a little above the going rate, but, because of his knowledge of hardwood floors and superior craftsmanship, I can understand why. I would recommend him to all of my fellow colleagues and piers, and I couldn't have asked for a better job from start to finish. Not to mention, he was COMPLETLY dustless and also very neat.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

        • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
          • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
        • 620 square feet of maple floor:
          • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
          • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
            • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

        • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
        • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
          • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
        • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
        • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
          • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
        • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
          • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
          • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
          • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
            • Includes removal of the dura rock.
        • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
