I hired Justin to help me with my laminate floor installation. He has been great to work with. He took time out of his own schedule to meet with me for the estimate and then actually went shopping with me for the laminate. He's helped come up with some creative solutions for trim and transitions.

Jeff recently completed a bathroom renovation in my lake cottage. The house was built in 1910 and it required Jeff to completely tear out the existing bathroom and do a complete remodel. Jeff did all of the work including the tear out, plumbing, electric, tiling, painting, etc. Jeff focuses on quality and detail which is extremely important especially when doing tile work. He also replaced doors in my home and was able to find solutions to unique door sizes and uneven floors. I would be happy to speak with anyone who is considering hiring Jeff for a project!

I am thrilled with the work Nick did on the floors in my house. He was great about communication and let us know the progress of the job and if there were any unexpected changes. I have several family and friends that I'm going to recommend to him. The hardwood floors are absolutely beautiful!

We did a complete kitchen remodel and had talked with a few contractors. It was getting frustrating because of their attitudes. In addition, we had a corner of our kitchen that was wasted space, and none of them came up with a solution to use that space. Then a friend of mine highly recommended Nulook so I contacted them and Bruce came up with a great idea for the space. He took out part of a wall and transformed it into extra storage and counter space, as shown in the pictures. Bruce is extremely professional; he cares about your project and is great at his craft. We replaced cabinets, counter, floors, back splash and windows. Everything came out better than we could have imagined. My wife and I highly recommend Nulook for any projects you have.

I contacted Brian about installing carpet on our stairs. He gave us a great price and told us that he also had some extra carpet pad that we could have (we already had purchased the carpet). I asked that Brian call us when he was about 15 minutes away because our dog does not like strangers. Often times contractors forget to do this. Brian remembered to call. He installed the carpet for us in a little over an hour. He was polite, very reasonably priced, and did an excellent job on the install. Our house is all hardwood floors but my wife and I still found ourselves looking for something else that we wanted carpeted! Brian was that good! Needless to say, we will be recommending Brian to friends and family. I can't say enough positive things about our experience! Thanks Brian!

I hired Ed and his team recently for a lot of interior work. I had carpets removed and replaced, the kitchen floor ripped out and redone, and wallpaper taken down and the entire inside of the home painted. Ed replied to me quickly, was honest, the prices were fair, but most importantly they went above and beyond and the work was great. I wouldn't hesitate to use Ed and his team again as it was a great experience.

It was a small job - we needed to replace one broken floor tile in our kitchen. We got a phone call soon after posting, and the replacement was done late that afternoon. He did a great job, was courteous and neat, and we were so grateful for the efficiency and quick response. Would not hesitate to call them again.

Vasily did an awesome job remodeling our tiny bathroom. Not kidding.. Bathroom is 3 x 7 feet! He was great in helping us decide what would work and what wouldn't. He removed the regular door and installed an old school door that slides to give us more space in the bathroom. We had both the floor and walls tiled. His tile work is impeccable. We enlisted him on several other projects as well. He's a great communicator and was always available to talk in the evening, which was key since I was at work most days. He's a great guy to work with, very easy going and flexible. I would recommend him for your next project!

My basement floor went from a rough, pocked and degraded surface which was impossible to keep clean to a floor with a sturdy, sealed, light, glossy, forever-finished surface.

I know Bryan is a bit new to Thumbtack and did not have any reviews yet when I decided to work with him, but I'm glad I made the choice to use him. Bryan was extremely good at communicating the work timeline and expectations with me. Work came out at a very high quality and Bryan was able to move quickly from the point of deciding to work with him to the point of completion. (less than a week total). Work was a tile job on a back-splash replacement for our kitchen and I included a picture of the finish product for reference. I supplied the tile and per our agreement Bryan procured the grout and I reimbursed him for it at cost. Bryan takes pride in his work and not only did every little ask we made of him but also suggested a few minor things that he could do to help the finished product look better and last. (i.e. a bit more caulking work ancillary to the tile work, and leaving a gap between the tile and counter in case we want to replace the counter in the future.) I would not hesitate to recommend Bryan for tile work.

My kitchen cabinets have European hinges that needed replacement and adjustment. Robert was great in doing just that. He has experience in kitchen cabinet building and installing, and cabinetry repairs. His specialty is custom built furniture so my repair work was completed with good quality.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
