Joe and his team did an amazing job on our roof. We needed a full tear off replacement on our back addition and was at our house the same day we connected through Thumbtack to give us a quote. His price was the best we found after contacting four contractors, and he was also the most honest and friendliest. We have a baby due in just a couple of months, so he scheduled our project right away and we had our new roof within 2 weeks of our quote! He was also very quick to respond to calls and emails with questions. We opted to clean up the debris ourselves to help save some $, and even still he and his crew organized the mess and tarped everything before they left so our dog wouldn't get hurt going outside. He also repaired a few problem areas of the rest of the roof that we didn't know existed - at no additional charge. All of that plus fully insured, 5 year work warranty, high grade materials - doesn't get much better! Great company - we HIGHLY recommend!

Helio was very responsive to my situation. I had used other contractors but the quality of work was very poor. What would have taken them months to do, Helio completed in just a few weeks. He was very careful to discuss how to handle items outside of the initial contract, which grew quickly. I would use him again in a heartbeat. He saved me the burden of much stress and despair. He is very punctual, keeps a very clean environment, provides great quality work, and is very versatile.

This was our first experience using a contractor that wasn't personally recommended or that we had worked with before. Brian was AWESOME from start to finish. Communication is key and he answered every email, call and text message immediately. The consultation was easy and painless - he explained everything he would be doing in detail, the time frame needed and approximate cost before he left the house. We had a ceiling repair, a few wall repairs, most of the interior and trim of the house painted, lights replaced, fans removed, and other small misc. items - I can't say enough about the professional meticulous job that was done! Extremely clean and organized. Absolutely stress free and completed in the time they estimated. It was so nice not to be put on the back burner or have someone "fit us in" during another job. AND my house is beautiful. We will be having Brian and his team back again - they're replacing all our doors and hardware - and who knows what else the future may bring.

I hired Jeff and his partner to do some interior remodeling and then also added on a master suite conversion. The entire crew did an amazing job and we are extremely pleased with the end results. We are currently in the end of the planning stages for Jeff, Jason and their crew to build a two story addition onto our home as well as expand the first floor area out for a much larger kitchen and eating area. We feel that the knowledge and expertise shown by our contractors is top notch and others contemplating any major remodels would do well to at the very least to meet with them and discuss the intended renovations. Adam was able to work with us on details and pricing. He is very personable and made intelligent suggestions to our ideas and together a plan came together. The craftsmanship of his work is beautiful and we love that he offers a five year guarantee on his work. Adam was able to call in other contractors to assist with other jobs we needed (driveway paving and new porch beams). The timeline was delayed a few times due to unforeseen weather conditions, but we are extremely happy with the end result and would definitely call Widger Landscape andTree again!

I have been working on a DIY project of building a sunroom on my house and getting towards the end of the project I wanted to hasten its completion by having someone hang and mud the drywall. That is where Thumbtack and Nulook Group came in; I posted my job on Thumbtack and Nulook Group was one of the contractors that responded. They called very quickly and we set up an appointment to take a look at the job. I explained what I needed to be done and the time frame that it needed to be done in; they returned a quote, again very quickly, which I accepted. Communication from start to finish was excellent; I knew when they were coming and how long everything would take. All went according to plan and their workmanship was excellent.

Luke was great to work with. He did an excellent job installing our new gutters. He delivered within the time and price he estimated. I was also impressed that I had virtually no cleanup to do after the job was done. You don’t get that with a lot of contractors! Many thanks!!

After hiring other contractors from your web site that ended disasterly, we finally found a company that was competent & friendly. Joseph was great to work with he offered ideas and solutions to our remodeling. he did what he said he was going to do and did it very well. we have already gotten on his schedule to do another project. Joseph and his helper ien were punctual and courteous. We never thought we would be able to say this about a contractor however pro builders have made it possible. we would definitely recommend him,to anyone looking for a handyman, he does it all!

I had Jason cut a new door into a solid basement wall to create a walkout. This was a very difficult and messy job but Jason and crew tackled it with ease. Even better than the original work was his follow up after the fact. I had some concerns with work another contractor had done around the door and Jason came right out to make sure everything was repaired to my satisfaction. I have already recommended him to friends and family.

I had Anchor Renovation Concepts complete my basement remodel and I couldn't be happier on how it turned out. Better than I could have imagined. Finding a contractor can be complicated. Not only was Gary professional, knowledgeable, responsive, but he also was intuitive which set him apart from the other 3 contractors I was in contact with. He asked questions that made sure we got the best ideas/ layouts for the space we remodeled. If you work with this company, I guarantee you will be blown away by the outcome of work.

I have had Mr. DeSantis remodel my basement and build the Alta-ment man cave that is world class work with a master bath that should be in a magazine, I have had him do work on my parents house rebuilding the front porch that was falling off the house, The way he re-engineered and built the foundation, Building it out of concrete making sure all the wood was away from the ground and solid concrete floor as part of the foundation to stop pest from getting under the porch and causing damage is out of control ! The first porch lasted 125 years, this one will last 3 or 400 years !!! Mr. DeSantis goes above and beyond the expected craftsmanship of all the work he has done for me and my family ! Old world craftsmanship ! Cares about what he's doing and it show's in all his work !!! He is the only contractor I will call to do any work that I need done !!!

Ryan was very professional and extremely helpful and flexible. Complications arose with the project and other contractors had to be brought in. He worked well with them and was extremely flexible with his schedule for my benefit. His work quality was excellent and he actually cared about how the end product looked and that I was pleased with it. He paid attention to details and made adjustments that improved the overall outcome; thus, he went beyond the call of duty to do some tasteful adjustments. I am very pleased with his work and would highly recommend him for your drywall work. This summer I had to work with many contractors and if they had been all like him I would've been ecstatic. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
