Super fast quote over thumbtack. Matt and his assistant were fantastic handling moving very heavy bulky furniture down narrow twisty stairs. Driving and storing them in my storage unit all at an extremely reasonable rate. I'll be calling them back for the next move. If you need movers, these are the guys to call.

I had to plan a move (three bedroom apartment into a storage unit) in a very short timeframe due to a work assignment. What could have been an extremely stressful experience was made into an easy transition by Cannon Movers. Brian made sure to stay in touch in the time leading up to the move, and there were no hidden fees - the price I was quoted was the price I was charged. The guys were friendly, cheerful, and professional. I was amazed at how efficiently they dealt with all of my belongings, and I was not worried for a minute about damage or anything. I would have no problem recommending Cannon Movers, or calling them again when I need another move.

Project: • Complete Bathroom remodel. Gut to studs, remove a small closet partition. Planned Additional: • Install a hot water heater and configure the natural gas plumbing as required • Install a natural gas dryer and configure the natural gas plumbing as required • Hardwired smoke / CO detectors on every floor Unplanned additional: • Structural assessment and installation of a header to carry the weight of free hanging rafters from previous owners remodel. • Upgrading the houses mainline for the plumbing system from ½ to ¾ pipe. (Hot and cold water) Small on the spot fixes FoC • Stuck door repair – fixed several doors that were binding in the house. • Helped remove the dishwasher for servicing • Helped install / repair 2nd bathroom hardware • Helped unload my truck a few times as I was moving stuff over from my apt. Bill and the crew at Freehold Enterprises are nothing short of phenomenal. They have given me a quite high end bathroom for a bargain price, while making sure all the systems and services are safe and up to code. Insured? – Yes, and he had his Insurance Agent email me over proof of insurance within 30mins of it being requested. Courteous?– without fail throughout the entire job. Ethicial and moral?- without a doubt. He is upfront and bluntly honest. He lives the Holmes on Homes motto of “Make it Right” and “Just like I’d do it in my own house.” Communication? – while I was away on vacation in Singapore, he kept me up to date on the projects progress weekly sending me multiple pictures and kept me apprised of any issues. Cleanliness / Concern for the Non work areas – Bill papered and plastic’ed what seems 3/4s of the house in order to avoid any possible scratches to the hardwood floors or dust getting places where it shouldn't be. Any minor cosmetic damage that occurred during his work he made sure were made good; such as pressure washing the back patio where he was working and touching up the trim paint damage from his tape. The project detailed ripping out the existing ½ bath and bathroom closet for the installation of a shower and full bathroom remodel. There was an additional constraint that we would be out of the country for two weeks and wanted the project done while we were gone. Bill contacted me through Thumbtack and was courteous and detailed in his phone survey of the project. He was punctual in his arrival for the on-site job survey and he impressed me with his knowledge and willingness to work with our requirements and budget. We had our written and itemized estimate in hand 3 days later. After reviewing all collected estimates we chose to go with Bill and Freehold. That evening we met at home depot and decided on a color pallet and hardware styles. During the conversation and listening to Bill describe how he planned to stretch our budget, we decided to go ahead and give Bill full design control. The end product did not let us down. We gave him key and went off on our trip. While we were gone, Bill sent us continuous updates with photos explaining what was going on. He handled and repaired several unplanned for issues in stride and kept us updated on those; the header and house leveling for the unsupported rafters and the need to upgrade the mainline for the plumbing. Along the way he handled several other minor things as they came up; some stuck doors, installation of hardwired smoke detectors and some lights, etc. Due to both the planned and unplanned extras, we ran slightly over on time and budget, and had to move in while Bill was still finishing up. He worked with us to create minimal disturbance to our lives and routines. The finished product was worth the wait. His tile design and choices were gorgeous. The bathroom is beautiful and now out classes the rest of the house. We love it. Then to top it all off, since we had gone slightly over budget he was willing to work with us on the final payment. We highly recommend Bill and Freehold for your next project and plan to continue using him ourselves for additional projects on this and other properties. Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this review and project: Stormer@frontiernet.net Sincerely, Jason Emans

These guys were fantastic to work with! They were flexible in meeting my needs on the timing of the move, as well as were prompt, courteous and just plain enjoyable to be around as they moved the items. This was just a bit more than a local move (75 miles apart), and these guys handled it flawlessly. Very pleased and would highly recommend them to help you move less than a household, like I was doing.

Our Original mober never showed. He had a ”small job” early was supposed to be there at 12. Never happened. Davids Moving .Showed up within the hour of my call for help. We have a 4 bedroom home and 3 children 3 and under living with us as well as their mom. We were so happy to have David and his Crew. They were AMAZING! They made it happen. We couldn't be happier with the job they did. I will be using and referring all my friends and family for Davids Moving. David made a bad situation better for us in every way. I can't say enough about what they did for our family. They are now like family to this Italian family. They get 100 stars from us.

Excellent team of professionals. Very responsive with communicating and felexibility in requesting date change. They handled a move from a 5 BR house to both a storage facility and an apartment. Their overall expertise, calm and genuine easy friendly manner reduced our stress level immensely. I would definitely refer them and plan to use them again.

Very tough - two stop move (Condo and Storage Unit) to new home in Albany from Troy. Couple that with below freezing temperatures and wind - Chris was there for every part of it. Great customer service during the negotiating process as well - he always returned your calls and texts withing minutes - so important to me.

I needed a company for a short distance move. Through Thumbtack I put in what I was looking for and I received an e-mail from Mack's Moving Company with a price for the move. The were in constant contact right up to the moving date. They showed up on time and did an excellent job. The were fast efficient and took care of my furniture and belongings with the greatest of care. They took apart beds etc and put them all back together. They placed everything exactly where I wanted them. I hope to never move again but they made this experience as pleasant as possible. It was amazing that these two men worked continually for 5 hours without so much as a 5 minute break, even after I suggested they take a break. I would HIGHLY recommend then to anyone looking for movers. Definitely a 5 star company. Great job fellows!!!

JRL Transportation was very helpful for our move. We had an excellent experience with them. They were very responsive in communicating prior to the move. The owner and his 3 assistants were very courteous and professional during the move from Syracuse to Binghamton. They arrived 45 minutes after their proposed time, so this may be important to consider when planning the duration of your move. They worked very efficiently and cleared our space in a short period of time. They had a truck and a van (in case it was needed) and drove to the new destination in a timely manner. There were minor scuff marks on the bed posts and on the chairs which were caused during transit. This may have been caused by our poor packaging but we would recommend verifying that furniture items have protective covers on them before transit. Everything else arrived at the new location without damage. JRL Transportation’s asking price for the move was much cheaper than other companies. Based on their efficiency, affordability, and professionalism, we would highly recommend JRL Transportation for any future moves.

We had Armory drive several large pieces of furniture from Saratoga Springs, NY to Virginia, at a price that was far, far below what other movers were quoting me! I sent pictures and dimensions of the furniture. We coordinated through Thumbtack to set up all the details. They showed up on time with moving supplies and 2 people. They were efficient and careful. They wrapped and strapped everything down in the U-Haul trailer and drove straight to VA that very day. The unloading on the other end was equally efficient and careful. I received a paid receipt. They only accept cash, which was difficult for the cost of a long-distance move, but other than that, I was very pleased. I would use them again, and I recommend them to others.

Debreen was a magician! My mother had felt overwhelmed with her impending move -- the combination of an unexpected timeframe to move and an enormous amount of possessions collected over decades. It was so much stuff to sort and decide what to keep what not to keep. We found d.o. organize online and once we met Debreen and she took us through the process and shared her philosophy it was an incredible sense of relief! Her whole take on streamlining really helped and most importantly my mother felt she had a cheerleader for a successful moving experience. Debreen is very professional and incredibly hard working. Not only did she help sort, pack, donate and sell over the course of weeks but she stayed with my mother the day of the move so that everything was moved into the new place and unpacked in an organized way. She is well worth the money. She eased the burden of organizing and moving for this family! I would strongly recommend Debreen to anyone moving, organizing or looking to downsize. -Wendy G.

Offered to come almost immediately. He was on time, very polite and considerate. He did a fine job over the 2 hours it took to construct 2 bookcases and move them into place. He cleaned up afterwards. I can recommend him without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
