Chris, Scott, Dave and team did a wonderful job in our home. We had the banister rail re-built which turned out better than I could have imagined, closets added in our master, doors hung, baseboards, door and window trim throughout. The team were pleasant to work with and talked me through any issues that arose. Chuck was easy to work with and we will be sure to work with BS Remodeling again in the future.

I purchased a new sliding door for my patio and windows for my entire townhouse. Chuck came to my house and thoroughly explained everything about window replacement, what to expect, performed demonstrations of the window capabilities, and provided data on pricing and material quality that I could expect from other companies. Chuck even explained how other companies can provide such low prices, but it's obvious that he is very confident in the products he sells and the team that works for him because price does not always sell - quality does. I can honestly say that the new patio door and windows have changed the look of my house (in a good way), significantly reduced the noise I hear coming from the street traffic, and has drastically helped to improve with maintaining a stable inside temperature (unlike my seriously despicable old windows and door). Lou came out and took measurements before placing the order and that process was very quick and easy. Lou was very informative and professional. His knowledge left me feeling even more confident that Rae Trent Remodeling was the perfect choice for my project. Chuck and Lou kept me up-to-date on the windows and when the install would begin and called a few times the days before to answer any questions and confirm that they were all set to start and that my schedule was still open. Jacob was the installer. He was wonderful and extremely professional. He worked very quickly, yet paid attention to the small details. He finished the job in two days - removing nine windows and a sliding patio door that were at least 40 years old was rough...more like an act of god, but it was done and the new were installed, caulked, insulated, and all the trim was put up on the outside along with any trim taken down on the inside and all the blinds were re-hung. I could not be more satisfied with Rae Trent Remodeling and the work that they completed for me. The price for the total job was below what I had expected. I will use this company in the future when I need additional remodeling work done to my house and I highly recommend Rae Trent Remodeling to anyone who is looking for excellent professional service, outstanding quality work, and very reasonable pricing.

Robert finished two projects for us last week. The first project was to tile our kitchen floor and the second job was to repair the two bottom boards of our sliding door leading outside to our patio. We chose Robert over the other contractors to do our kitchen floor because he advocated removing the old linoleum floor as well as the plywood underlayment that was nailed to our 1x8s subfloor. Naturally, this was more expensive than the estimates that we received for laying the porcelain tile on top of the linoleum. We couldn't be happier with Roberts work ethic or craftsmanship. The job was especially challenging because Robert chose to refasten the old subfloor to the 1/10 joists below and lay the backer board on the subfloor without damaging the water pipes for the radiant heat system that lay immediately below the subfloor. It looks fantastic! Finally, I don't really understood how he did it, but the rotting boards of our sliding door were repaired, saving us the thousands of dollars we would have had to spend to replace the door entirely. We will definitely be calling Robert again!

Tim and his team provided high quality work at half the price of the major window installers. No one can beat his price due to lack of overhead. Tim is not a salesman. He will come in and give a fair estimate and backs it up. Very respectful and good around kids. Polaris windows compare very favorably to any other window. Great man, great product, and a great price.

Wilson came to clean our gutters, which hadn't been touched in over 2 years. He did a great job, especially considering he not only had to clean them but disassemble them to get them fully cleaned. Even though it was a two day job, Wilson stayed in our budget. We were so pleased with his hard work and the quality he put into it, we had him fix an outdoor pipe that burst, rehang a storm window, power wash our front entrance, and we plan to hire him for many more projects. He was hard working, did a good job, easy to contact, reliable, professional, cleaned up after himself, and reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend him to friends and neighbors.

When I first called Factory Windows Direct, LLC I had to leave a message, The call was returned within 20 minutes by Marc, who explained he was the owner of the company and would love the opportunity to work with us. I am in the residential rental business with numerous single family homes and apartment buildings. I have worked with other window companies in the past and have always felt as if I was nickeled and dimed at every turn. I honestly did not feel that way when I was speaking with Marc. I purchased 18 windows from Factory Windows Direct, LLC for a property in University Heights. I was told the windows would be ready for installation in approximately 2 weeks and once ready, I would receive a call to set a time and date for installation. My windows were installed within 3 weeks of ordering them, The installers were courteous and respectful of my property and cleaned up behind themselves. There were no hidden fees or any attempt to charge for additional unnecessary work or any of the games that other window companies have played in the past. In the end, I received exactly what I was told, in the time frame I was promised, with one exception, one of the old windows must have been leaking and rotted the wood under the window, The installer called me over to show me the damage and told me he would replace the rotted wood at no charge. I was extremely satisfied with and would recommend them highly.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
